Greetings! Today's video shows the last movements of the last functioning "unpainted" mk1 1972 stock as it heads from the westbound platform at Ealing Common into Ealing Common depot.
I use the quote marks for the word unpainted as, yes, the cab ends acquired red paint during its film career down at Aldwych and has been tagged numerous times by graffiti-ists.
The train had made its way from the Aldwych running tunnel, to Holborn and on to King's Cross, where it reversed in the platform there to head west to Ealing Common. A final reverse movement into the depot.
This unit is ultimately awaiting disposal, but before that, various items will be recovered from it to keep the remainder of the '72 stock fleet on the Bakerloo line running. So, this is not exactly the last of the '72s but the last unpainted aluminium train able to move under its own power on the Underground network. I should point out that there is also the unpainted 1962 stock unit at Hainault depot, but this is not currently in working order. Also of note here is the fact that this is one of those rare occasions where a guard can be seen at work (opening and closing the single door) on a tube train. All Underground trains are One Person Operated nowadays, except for special heritage train workings where guards are essential to comply with the operating procedures for that particular type of stock.
