Palms In close grip works lats. While palms forward works upper back, and bicep. So in conclusion close grip v bar pulldown works lats. While palms out with wide grip targets traps, upper back, bicep.

Great video, can you explain how the different type of grips; close grip, shoulder wide grip, and wide grip would be on the lats and the back. Also what about using the reverse grip. Can you explain how each of these different grips using the straight bar in the front would work on the lats and back. Is one grip better than the other?

Do you have any videos about grips for pull ups? I've been doing neutral grip pullups recently and have been making strength gains, but really going for lat size for my v-taper.
@bonzai9758
@bonzai9758 10 лет назад
i believe he has a video called three tips for the v-taper actually. he explains using the individual handles, turning the palms away from your body so opposite of neutral grip and pulling to your sides. i started doing this and made all kinds of size gains. the reason for your strength gains is neutral grip allows more bicep activation btw.

OKE IT'S OBVIOUS THIS QUESTION WILL POP UP IN ALMOST ANYONE'S HEAD !!: how does GRIP WIDTH and actual GRABBING GRIB ( pronated, neutral , supinated ) affect the lat pulldown and other exercises??
@Mike51689
@Mike51689 10 лет назад
wide grip = more work on your upper lats. close grip = more work on your lower lats. Going from pronated to neutral to supinated grips, you increase the assistance that the biceps provide to the pulling movement. combine all of these for overall lat development. hope this helps.
@hhl482
@hhl482 10 лет назад
To maximize the role of the lats you want your shoulders externally rotated, then pull as to bring your upper arm into your side - adduction. Hold your hands in front of you like for an overhead press, then just open your shoulder until your upper arm points straight to the side. Hold your forearms vertical. That's it. The lats are at their strongest for shoulder adduction here - any wider just reduces range of motion and puts stress on the wrist. The other way to hit the lats is shoulder extension: pulling your upper arm straight down and back tucked in close to the body, similar to a barbell row with a narrow or underhand grip. Like he says in the video, any of these movements bring in more traps and rhomboids when you lean back and increase scapular retraction. IMO, if you want to really hit the lats hardest the medium- narrow neutral grip variety with an upright posture is best: look in the mirror and mimic the movement and you'll see that there is zero scapular retraction until your upper arm lines up with your torso, which is pretty much the end point of the neutral grip pullup. These same principles apply to rows: narrow or underhand grip, bar to belly, hits lats more, wider grip, elbows flared, bar to upper abs hits traps and rhomboids (or as some put it, 'upper lats') more.
@Mike51689
@Mike51689 10 лет назад
Nayan hhl 482 imo the 2 best ways to isolate your lats: youtube search "ab strap lat pull downs" first video. the use of the ab strap eliminates the biceps and hence the lats are forced to do more of the work. it is essentially an alternative to the nautilus pull-over machine if your gym does not have one. then youtube search "kneeling cable pull down" first video - note some people call this movement a "lat pull-in." this is similar to Jeff's separate-handle pull-downs that he demonstrates in this video to keep the upper-arms pointed directly to the side. try them out
@hhl482
@hhl482 10 лет назад
Michael Lau Good idea. I work out at home, so I can't do the straight arm cable pulldowns, but I guess I could get some of the straps. I was more talking about lats versus traps/rhomboids than getting biceps out of it, but that's a good point. The pullover machine is pretty similar to what I was saying about the medim-narrow neutral grip version. It makes for pure shoulder extension with very little scapular action. Actually, you could do them underhanded as well, but my pullup stand is set up for the neutral grip.

Hello Jeff, Very nice video, but not so for me because I do not go to the gym (money..). I would appreciate if you would do a video about each dip position, the different tension between chest/shoulder/triceps .. I saw some vides but explained things just partially. Same thing about variations on pull up bar, but mostly I would want to see the dips. Thank you, by the way, if the video is already out here, I'll check that, but you know, it's not easy to find THE SECOND BIG THING I always wanted to know more about, is the SORENESS of the muscle. Is it ok that after while you get small or even no soreness? Or is it just the way I train? Is it because of same, unchanging excercises? And does the muscle grow faster, when it's sore? (I realized it a bit, after some time of no training, for the first time/s I get soreness for 4 or even 5 days) THANK YOU !

Thumbs up for this video. Very helpful. I am a 40yo guy who had no real guidance when lifting and made some bad decisions. Lots of bench, curls and triceps. I never worked back, shoulders or legs. I have been lifting now doing squats, dead lifts and bench but I find that when I dead lift and the weight is heavy that I round the top of my back and shoot my hips up. I friend who is a power lifter said it was a sign of a weak upper back. My question to you is how much is lost when I use a Hex (trap) bar to do my dead lifts? I can move more weight and my form seems to be a lot better. I just don't get the same range of motion. Am I doing more harm than good using the Hex bar?
@roebuckmckinney
@roebuckmckinney 8 лет назад
I doubt you're doing any harm with Hex bar DL's. They don't train the lower back, hamstrings, or glutes nearly as effectively as conventional DL's, but I've found that they do a pretty good job on the mid and upper back. If you're training upper back, might I recommend weighted carries/farmer's walks? Those have really helped me out.

If you look at the direction of the fibers of the latissimus they do not run up and down. They run on a diagonal. Direct opposition of the lat would happen if you sat slightly farther back from where the cables were. Also, you are MUCH stronger in a closed pack shoulder position vs open pack. That's science in strength. I'd like a response Jeff. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Latissimus_dorsi.PNG

Hey Jeff good informative video. I have a question for you. As a professional trainer and physical therapist, which 1 of the 2 sports do you think or know is the most physically and mentally demanding, for both training time and for the actual event; American football or boxing? The reason I'm asking is because of the Cotto vs. Martinez fight this Saturday. A friend and I (actually a group of friends on each side) were arguing which two of the sports were more demanding. He said football while I said boxing. If it is neither, can you say which other sport and why? Thank you! Please thumbs up this if you want to see this answered!!!
