Late 1940s Caterpillar D8 2U Dozer 

I respect my elders and completely trust an elderly that has lived and worked on these machines their entire life. There are those who think they know it all but never sat on this machine and will disrepect these old timers to make themselves appear to be good mechanics, but you can't take away experience like these old timers have. The time, the experience and the wisdom is priceless. Thank you gentlemen for sharing these videos.

Hi, Folks. Good video and thanks for posting it. I started my 58 year operating career on machines of that vintage. How-wevver, that it NOT a late 1940s machine. It is 1950 - '53. The giveaways - the later model hard nose around the radiator and the two-stick transmission - both of these changes came in 1950 Prior to that date, the gear shift was what is commonly called the 'slide bar' system. the gear shift had a 'gate' with a slot for each gear and you had to SLIDE the gear lever sideways to match up wht the gate slot for the gear that you wanted. I always heard that you should let the pony motor run out of fuel rather than shutting it off. I'm surprised he didn't shut off the gas.

That is the first Machina I learn to run, but with hydraulics Nice and heavy.

What is the purpose of having the exhaust going forward?

NEVER!!! Open the throttle UNTILL you want it to start. He opened it before he put it on compression, the diesel didn't even have time to build up heat, that is the key to starting properly. Having the the throttle open puts fuel in the cylinders and washes the liners, cold fuel does not ignite until enough heat is made in the combustion area.

That sure is an able piece of equipment! We call them donkey engines hear in England to start them. Is that fitted with there own engine? Of something else. Sound great 👍
