Excellent video. Was just about to pull out my 24 inch Intel white iMac to enjoy this afternoon when, I noticed this post. Agree with all your points that, these make an acceptable back-up desktop computer as long as you are fine with running older versions of software which, I very much enjoy doing. However, I prefer to keep my system on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard because with Rosetta you are still able to also run any Power PC programs designed for OS X including Apple Works and Via Voice. In addition, these models shipped with the white apple remote control which, if you pick up a used one works great with "Front Row" and is a lot of fun to use.
I’ve got a friend who was about to throw one out and I snatched it just because I think they’re so cool looking that if nothing else, they will always be an awesome prop/decoration, or centerpiece…they also have awesome speakers compared to the garbage that is produced and sold today
I put Debian and Steam on my white imac from 2006, aftre fitting an SSD. I dont use it though, but it was a fun task. It took some work to get the nvidia GPU working in debian, but after that it was fine. Have Wi-Fi and adjustment of light on panel working etc. But it is not very quick for GPU tasks, other tasks work fine in Debian. When that is said, I am from time to time considering ripping out the internals and build an "open rig" gaming/mining PC in the case. So then I am thinking an all watercooled rig with a lot of radiators and no display, just open air :)
I have a late 2006 and as of right now the latest OS it can get without using an unofficial bootloader is OS Lion. RU-vid is no longer functional but the workaround is downloading Chrome. And even with chrome things like RU-vid and Facebook freak out and begin flickering and jittering. I'm preparing to remove the 2.16 gigahertz processor and replace it with a 2.33 gigahertz processor. And despite having wasted 2 straight days fiddling with installing operating systems and upgrading I'm considering swapping out the hard drive with a solid state drive although I'm unsure what a difference it would make.
Is this the Core Duo or Core 2 Duo? BTW these are perfectly up to date if you install windows which all Intel Macs can do (and if Microsoft chooses to layer in, silicon Macs as well). You can only emulate on PowerPC.
Great video my friend. I am a teacher in Brasil and is there any softaware with video conference, like Google Meet, that works on this computer? I have one of these and I just love it.
I believe you'd have to adapt the internal connector on the display panel to something that your M1 would accept. Later iMacs can do it (some 2009 models and later) if they're running High Sierra. Cheers!
I have this iMac Late 2006. After trying to use a patcher to install Mac OS X 10.11, now this Mac is unusable... it wont boot correctly or frozen during boot-up.. Anyone know how to reset this Mac to normal? I tried Zapping PRAM, but still not working.
i am not sure how you managed to surf any websites. I have been trying all day with mine which is a 24 inch and i think identical to yours. All the websites i have been visiting just do not work very well at all with the version of safari on it. I am trying waterfox to see if i can do any better.
How I would like to meet you! I refurbished two imac late 2006 .5.1 With lion os . But i can't install Windows 10 64bit with vmware version (?).. have you done this? There are some message ... i can't understand. Tomorrow i will post you some. 😢. I'm waiting for an imac late 2006 24" !😅 my definitive imac! The other two i hope to sell ... 😮😮❤❤
back then there was no internet recovery, and this can't upgrade to a software that does, so you need the install DVD, or a retail version of 10.whatever on DVD you could try make an install usb through another machine too
Yes, Rory Thomas is correct, use your built-in DVD super-drive and load in a copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or a copy of OS X 10.7 Lion. I prefer Snow Leopard because with Rosetta you are able to run older OS X Power PC programs (i.e. Apple Works, Via Voice, etc.) and Apple's Front Row. The last time, I checked Apple was still selling retail copies but you might have to call customer support. If they no longer sell this item, you should be able to pick a used Apple CD at a cheap price on Ebay.
You need a bootable drive that has Mac OS X Lion or Snow Leopard that can be booted from an external USB hard drive. Then, once you log in on that boot drive, go to the disk utility and format the SSD to Mac Extended Journaled. Then, all you gotta do is install Mac OS to that drive. Hope this helps. I learned the hard way when I installed an SSD into my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
I installed a custom version of Firefox for my Late 2006 iMac. It's the custom version made by parrotgeek1. It's better than Safari on Lion. It's called Firefox Legacy. I'm not sure if anyone has the 24" iMac, but does someone know what version of the Adobe Creative Suite works on Lion on this particular iMac?
welcome to europa, where apple pcs (yes macs are pcs too) are really uncommen. Those machines will cost you 100€ and more...I'm still in search for an imac g3 in good condition and its almost impossible.
