guuuuuuurllll this is like science. sometimes i just watch your videos to learn deep inside about the tecniques like body weight on the wheels and stuff like that and i feel improving so much while a beginner, it's really mind blowing. thank you
Today this morning, I got roller skates and during those few hours of skating around I went from holding the wall to skating around carefree. I watched some videos of yours and learned a lot! Right now I can go a bit fast while skating even though im a beginner.
Research your boot choices carefully, different brands are better for some feet. Jackson boots are best for wide feet, Riedell run more narrow and Edea have a unique shape that doesn't suit everyone's feet. Sometimes custom is best, my left foot is a full size smaller than the right and it was a huge difference when I finally got my Harlick custom boots. Really cool to see the support for others in the skating world here too. I don't skate too much on wheels, seems so much harder than on ice, but your videos are spot on for all genres of skating.
Dirty Deb, you are one of my favorite RU-vidrs! Not only are you gifted on skates, but you're equally as good teaching this stuff! Its because of you I finally took the step and bought a pair of Riedell's, now I just need to go practice lol. @@Dirtydeborahharry This would be great! I'm learning a bit from artistic skaters, a bit from derby skaters, a bit from inline bladers, and sometimes they have quite distinct views on how to do particular moves and each style can be pretty adamant that their way is the "correct" way 😆

I second this comment! It’s because of the Information you give, HOW you teach and the fact that you are actually a good ass teacher is what inspired me to buy my first pair of skates this past summer. Now I’ve made enormous head way. At least from where I started. Now I’m just so annoyed with the outside street debris. I think I might feel confident enough to practice at my local rinks. All because of you. No I’m not trolling. This is an honest comment.
Dirty I was going to try these today and realized what I'm doing is actually carving right and left with parallel turns instead, where my weight is on the back foot. It took all my courage to even consider putting my weight on the lead foot to turn. I guess I will try breaking it down into smaller steps and just work on shifting my weight and rolling with it, before actually turning with it. Also thank you for another amazing video. You catch me in the damn feels in EVERY video!! LOL
Your weight can go on the lead or follow foot as long as the foot closest to the direction of turn is in front. Experiment with weight on front then back. Make sure you are using a split stance.
You are SO good at teaching! I am 51 and look forward to my first skates one day soon. In the meantime I find myself binge-watching your videos and thinking to myself : "I can do that!". I'm sure I'm not the only one you have totally inspired. Your technique expositions make them seem entirely possible.

Thank you for another awesome lesson! What impact do the tightness or looseness of your trucks have on lateral movements and changing edges? Could you do a video on truck adjustment. I'm a new skater with just out of the box skates.

Not at all! What makes you a great teacher is that you remember what it's like not to know how. First we have to know which part of our body to use and where to put it. It sets us up for balance, strength and helps prevent injury.
Thanks for the video! From your explanation it seems I have been doing this unknowingly with bad technique. Winter rain has made it impossible for me to skate lately but hopefully I will get to practice the correct way soon.
I love watching your videos! My goal for 2020 is to learn how to roller skate. I've been wanting to learn for a long time now and feel I should just go for it. I am nervous because I've had knee surgeries. How hard is skating on your knees? I can bend them just fine, I'm mostly worried about how much pressure goes to the knees?
I can not emphasize how important it is to take it easy and have a measured plan in place. Your knees will be able to hold your weight, in place over time, as your hips and core get stronger. Make sure that you warm up every time you skate and skate for short periods of time and rest.
this was so helpful for me, every time someone falls in front of me i almost fall as i would try turning the best i could when i didn't know the proper way to.
I have missed a few of you vid, chronic condition has flared so not been up to skating, but I missed watching you and the inspiration you light up in me and my husband for skating, but the weather is not fun in 🇬🇧 at the mo which puts a dampener on things as well. I remember skate lessons at Warrington roller skating rink in Pennsylvania on we're just young Lads and we all got Circle and they taught us to do the hokey pokey you know how to do that and the other thing is northeast PA was big roller derby have you ever roller derby and can you show us some of it thank you great job
Hello Dirty Debra so im just getting back acclimated to skating i been at it a month and a half now i can skate but im really not skating im trying to keep the gas going with getting extremely tired from going around 1 good time sometimes 2. Im 48 yrs old and Im doing absolutely great progress that but skating seems to make me work 2x harder than what i should be. I love all your videos but i really would like to see a consistent gas technique to be less work on me getting tired so quickly. If that makes any sense. Thank you for everything i get absolutely stuck watching and learning from your videos thanks for everything and keep up great work.

You should teach most people how to spin on roller skates to the right ..because I only know how soon around towards the left on skates ..I almost fell to my face trying to spin around to right instead of the left

Hey Deborah, i have been trying to decide what skate to buy and i think i have decided to just buy the boot and the plate separately. So what leather boot would you recommend? and an all around aluminum plate? would a different boot brand and plate work? i just want to put together a decent skate to learn on and keep for a long time :) . You may have done one already but is there a vid on rink etiquette? Inside lane/ outside lane center area? Biginners/experts. Where they should be on the rink for safety and precision smoothness of travel.
Huh, I did this because it was fun and didn't know what I was doing. My parking lot where I live is slightly sloped and I like to go down and turn around like that.
Dirty Deb, this is the video I need at the time I need it. I also need your help unconfusing a skate plate issue. I need to upgrade to better fitting skates to keep progressing, and I was planning to buy Avanti magnesium plates ($190 MRSP) (or aluminum, if you think that is better for longevity). But, if the Roll-Line Variant M is the same price ($199 MSRP), am I supposed to buy that because it is Roll-Line? I already know I like the Sure-Grip super cushions, and I will change out the toestop on the avanti. Roll-line plate would mean figuring out how to use it and how to get parts, and wondering can it hold up to outdoor skating, which is primarily what I do? (trail and street skating 90% of the time, rink 10% of the time, and hoping to get to some limited ramps/carving/flow without acrobatics when my skills are ready). These plates are going on a Jack or something similar or more supportive, and I am making the purchase in 2 weeks when I make a 7 hr drive to the skate shop to try on. I don't plan on buying more skates for years, so I really want to make the best choice for longevity! Can you help please?
The number of people at the rink who do this without even realizing it is staggering. Turn to look at their friend...and off they go, drifting towards their friend. All we have to do is look in the opposite direction to avoid them! Then, the good skaters will get asked by those same people "How do you turn?" Uhh...you're already doing it! LOL
This comment gives me dual feelings because on the one hand, people ask ME how to turn! Does this mean I'm a good skater? The problem is.. I tell them "I don't know, I bought quality skates, loosened the trucks, and now I just lean and my skates take me where I want to go. Or, you know, crossovers" LMAO
@@jenniferbeierle2586 Had a woman at my local rink, never read the papers that came with her skates, didn't know how much of a skate could actually even be adjusted/changed. On point, it was her first time getting her own skates, so it's understandable. Anyway, by chance, I had the same skates, just in a different color. Because of that, she kept complaining about them to me, "Do you have problems with...?" "Does it feel like...?" Etc. Turns out, yep, she skated them out of the box, and the trucks were cranked down so tightly, they only wanted to go straight. I loosened them for her and she was crossing over after probably the 2nd or 3rd lap around. She came by to thank me and I gave her a mini-tutorial on common tools she should get (her and her 3 children all have their own skates now), how to use each tool, and the different parts of a skate/what can be tinkered with. Nine months later, we hang out outside of the rink now and then. LOL You never know when/where/how you're going to meet new skate buddies! :) I always have a giant wheeled box I take to the rink, too - spare stops and all parts for them, extra lock nuts, bearings, laces, etc. plus tools and a bottle of Fast Orange or Orange Goop and shop rags for cleaning wheels (my local rink gets "gunky" quite frequently)...ALL of the regulars know I've "got it all", so instead of going to the skate room, they'll come up to me to borrow a tool or ask if I have a spare "whatever". Helps to always be prepared. I also take a condensed version of "parts most likely to break" (single lace, toe stop, 2 bearings, etc.) when outdoor skating as well, but I use a fanny pack for that. Haven't meant any roller skaters out and about (most people here still think roller skating is for kids and/or that it should only be done in a rink), but I have helped a couple skateboarders. Anyway, yeah, I just tell those who ask me, "lean into it" and that they ARE already turning, they just haven't realized it when they ask. LOL
I love your videos, I use to skate when I was younger. Was only was capable of speed and cross turning. I’m getting back into it now. However I fear I may come up short now since I have a really bad left knee (Skateboarding Injury) Do you know any skaters will bad knees still putting in work?
Oh sure! Just take it slow and easy. That is literally advice I give myself everyday because so many times I want to go all out! lol! Skate for the long haul :)
