I strongly dislike the trend of erecting a massive paywall around geology (mostly Ancestry). With advancements in AI technology making document transcription easier and more cost-effective, access to geological information should be expanding, not becoming more restricted. It seems like there's a significant amount of gatekeeping going on, which is frustrating.
How else would you suggest paying for the cost of the websites acquiring the records and the manpower needed to maintain and upload the information? Considering the cost of travel to the far-distant local archives, the annual cost of these sites is a steal. One subscription doesn't begin to cover hotel stays, much less meals, gas, airfare, etc.
I’m very upset about the paywalls on Ancestry! Dna is so important in our genealogy research & to not be able to use the new dna tools without paying extra is very upsetting! Ancestry is already very expensive & being on a fixed income doesn’t leave any extra for the paywalls! It’s sad it’s becoming like everything else & it’s all about the money!☹️
I tried the cemetery search. It only brings up distant cousins. My parents and grandparents, people I knew are not included. Each time I click the map I get different cemeteries. Maybe because I'm on my phone? But that's all I have at the moment.
Sorry you feel that way. Making good choices is dependent on knowing what is available to you. I’m going to continue sharing what’s out there on all platforms so you can decide what will work for you. And thanks for the compliment too!
Thank you! I needed this. I was going to have to hunt out how to find the FamilySearch AI document search thing from whichever RootsTech video I had seen it on the other week. I was just in need of it the other day. So, this is good timing! Looking forward to your next videos with technology updates! 💚
