A quality charger from someone who know what they are doing, Japanese Electrolytes 😻😻, this design actually makes as it uses GaN FETs as the main switchers. Low output capacitance isn’t a major issue due to the very high switching frequency which this should operate at and this should have enough input capacitance at higher voltage because of the APFC circuit so there is more energy.

Well its Apple so it isn't cheap, but that is a nicely designed and built PS. I really love that Apple has, at least for this series of laptops, forsaken the thinner is better paradigm they've lived by for so long. Yeah, slim and light is nice when you're carrying it around, but to have the power you want and the cooling you need the new M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBooks are a refreshing reprieve from the thin above all else mindset that Apple is known for. Painful to see that nice PS torn to pieces.

ha the Reality Distortion Field is as strong as ever. Now it turns out that "thick is ok, heavy is ok, notch is ok". Just imagine for a second Dell or HP released a machine with a notch. What I've never understood with Apple's chargers is the way they can't seem to decide if they are making a class 1 (earthed) or class 2 (double insulated) product. They have that earthing "button", but it only gets connected if you use the apple-supplied mains lead, if you use the plug heads it just gets left floating.
@DevynCairns
@DevynCairns 2 года назад
It's necessary to make a charger that works with a floating ground anyway, because some major markets (mostly Japan) basically don't provide earth on their sockets anywhere. Passing the ground through to the device through the cable is an added benefit where you're able to use it, but it's not a guarantee. And I'm guessing it would be harder to provide that folding design with the extra earth prong anyway.

I presume the synchronous rectification helps achieve very high conversion efficiency, so that a 140W power adapter can be fitted into such a small package without cooking itself at the first opportunity.
@davidhunt240
@davidhunt240 2 года назад
The GaN switchers help most in that regard. The synchronous rectification helps with the power factor correction that everyone is hot on these days (apparent vs. real power) as we're most likely going to get a bill for difference 😋

@Lucas_van_Hout
@Lucas_van_Hout 2 года назад
@@user-dv6yo5bc4z also I just realised pd 3.1 spec goes up to 240 watt. Also there are new GaN batteries that can charge at a linear speed begging to end, rather than slowing down when almost empty or full. Imagine a 100Wh GaN Battery with 240PD charging. In theory it would be able to charge in only 25 minutes from 0 to 100. That’s something far into the future, but we can dream
@davidhunt240
@davidhunt240 2 года назад
Ummm, no the reason why the charger is slow is down to the chemistry of the cells it is trying to charge. As the cells become more charged they become more inefficient and will take more power but charge less as a proportion. You can charge them hard, but they'll get hot and you'll waste a ton of power and dramatically shorten the life of the cells. GaN will just make the charger smaller, it might accelerate charging a bit, but it won't allow you to fully charge a lithium chemistry cell to 100% quickly.

General question - how reliable is the USB-C connector when passing 5 amps? I guess it's only 1.25 Amps per pin (there are 4 ground and 4 Vbus pins in the USB-C connection) but it still feels like a lot for such a small contact area.
@peter.s.3207
@peter.s.3207 2 года назад
The USB-C PD spec states 40 mOhm max contact resistance per power bus (i.e. VBUS is max 40 mOhm, GND is max 40 mOhm, etc). We can see at 2:40 that the Power-Z PD monitor is reading 27.75V, so assuming a perfect 28V regulated output this is 0.25V drop at 5A, or 50mOhm total, 25mOhm per power bus, dropping 1.25W at each connector. This is of course a rough estimate as we don't know the unloaded voltage or how close to spec the Power-Z PD monitor module is, but it seems well within spec.
@GodmanchesterGoblin
@GodmanchesterGoblin 2 года назад
@@peter.s.3207 Interesting. I looked this up - I read 40mOhm per contact in an Amphenol spec. Since there are four contacts in parallel then it's nominally only 10mOhm in each rail so 20mOhm in total. 5 Amps through 20mOhm will only dissipate 0.5W in the connector which isn't great in terms of contact heating, but I am sure the designers knew what they were doing. I won't be so worried about this issue in the future. Thanks.
@peter.s.3207
@peter.s.3207 2 года назад
@@GodmanchesterGoblin Oh that's kind of odd... I doubled checked the 40mOhm figure and it seems like different sources are saying different things (per bus vs per contact). I rounded up a short USB C-to-C cable with a power meter on both ends and got 25mV drop at 660mA, which is pretty close to 20mOhm per connector (plus the wire) so looks like that's indeed the correct value.

All the parts used seem to be really high quality to an amatour. What's your opinion, were there any cost saving measures used where using even more expensive component would have increased total efficiency of this charger or improve it expected life-time? Or is this truly no-compromises build for this kind of charger? (I think they could have made the charger not-glued case but that's obviously an intentional Apple design decision to avoid screws, not about making it cheaper to manufacture.)
@davidhunt240
@davidhunt240 2 года назад
Nicely made power supply, it is a shame the "duck head" adapter that it plugs into doesn't bother to connect the ground pin, thus leaving the MacBook Pro case sitting at half of line voltage, not a problem for people in the US and Canada, but for those who have "real" electricity, like mine is 245V - the case runs at a rather tingly 120V, it is the 4D experience that everyone's been talking about 🤣 I guess it saved Apple a few cents on a $6k laptop...

I was interested in the Anker 717 140W charger but is currently not available in Australia. Amazon had the Aftertop brand which look similar for $101 compared to the $149 for the Apple 140W charger. I wanted it to charge the Anker 737 battery bank. The Aftertop looked similar to the Anker 717 and I wondered if Anker and Aftertop buy from the same supplier. The Aftertop has 3 ports.

Here is the teardown of Anker 717 140W: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DozidP4GVbw.html And we didn't take apart any Aftertop chargers.
