In an effort to improve tap squareness, I copy the tap holding device from a tapping head, to see if I can get a less wobble prone tap holder than I currently have.
It works better than the previous one I was using, although I discovered that I can still improve some of my set ups.
Thanks to the people at Piper tools for inspiration

You could use a 3-piece tap set. Because of long lead in on tap 1 they are self centering. I use them since nearly 50 years and thousands of taped holes later, i never broke one tap. Not one. Takes two minutes more time but you are on the save side. Like my toolmaker dad always said: Take the tree piece and save the whining. He was damn right.

That is an exceptional tap holder idea with those floating jaws. It is very difficult to hold taps as there are no standards of the size of the square on the tap...it varies from tap size and manufacturer. That is a tool worth further perfecting for sure. Like your channel sir, please check out my similar channel.

I think I will end up remaking in a smaller size and trying to improve this one, but yes, I would agree that it is a concept worth pursuing

So this is a chuck, not a "floating" head? I spent sometime trying to work out how it could float before it dawned on me lol

I may have it wrong, but I define floating heads as ones that can move laterally to align with the hole while keeping the tap square. Some may think of this as a floating head as the jaws float to align with the tap.

That turned out great, nice work. What if you made the body out of square/rectangular stock first and then turned the diameters last, might be easier for the cross holes and bores to be set up “on the square” first. Note, I’m not a machinist, but I have limited machines and think of setups that I would use. Cheers

That might work - certainly does away for the need for a dividing head. The only issue is that it does mean interupted cuts when turning the diameter, which depending on the lathe may produce a porrer surface finish. I used round because I had a bit around the right size...

LifePro tapping cheat, use one of those hex-bit combination drill/taps(ali/bangood and others sell them, cheap and easy to get) to get the tap started straight. They do come in versions with a very long or a very short drill section ahead of the tap so the short-drill version is obviously preferable but either work as guide to get the first few threads started straight so that you can finish with a proper tap...

If I was only RH metric that might work, but I also do LH threads, BA, BSF, BSW and UN varieties...

@@occasionalmachinist As with all cheats, they're cheats, easy fixes that work in some cases but not all so commenting more for the benefit of those reading the comment-section than anything else
