As a gay Brazilian man, I’m very happy to see my country being one of the most protective of LGBTQIA+ rights. I'll give some additional information about Brazil that was not mentioned: 1. If I'm not mistaken, Brazil has the highest percentage of people who identify as LGBTQIA+. It’s 15% (more than 30 million people) of the population; 2. We have the largest LGBTQIA+ parade in the world! And it takes place annually on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo; 3. We currently have 2 transgender deputies in the Brazilian Congress (Erika Hilton and Duda Salabert), a gay governor (Eduardo Leite, from the state of Rio Grande do Sul) and a lesbian governor (Fátima Bezerra, from the state of Rio Grande do Norte - my state

It's worth pointing out that some countries (which obviously weren't mentioned here) are very much not very progressive. Also, there are stark differences within countries, especially between urban and rural areas. I'm pretty confident Buenos Aires, where I'm from, is probably one of the most LGBT friendly cities anywhere in the world, but some other regions in the country (and the lack of good anti discrimination laws) brings the overall rating down.

The constitutions in latin America are very progressive given it plight for equality in their independence movements. Unfortunately US influence has supported many repressive fascist military government around the region but in the last 20 years a lot has change for the better.

It makes sense to remove the safety index for this one, I can say for Brazil, with money, being in the top 5% you can be in a safe bubble and that bubble is very progressive, I never had any problems just some people being ignorant. As a trans and lesbian one can get a great healthcare out of pocket acess for a decent price in dollar terms, buy hormones over the counter. I don't leave the country despite being also european because of these stuff and that is what makes life quality actually higher. For the bottom 50% that lives in the favelas, much closer to the evangelical influence and family the reality changes a lot of course, but it would not apply for a tourist/foreigner

In Mexico, acceptance is zoned, and not necessarily the capitals will be more tolerant, for example, originally I am from a town in the mountains of Tamaulipas, and there it is accepted to be gay, but you go to cities like Merida or Veracruz, their Gay spaces will be more marginalized, it is as if the laws are liberal but Mexicans are conservative themselves. Jalisco is by far the gayest state maybe along baja California and Mexico city. The southeastern region was the last to legalize same sex marriage , surprising considering how touristic the place is.

Many countries in Latin America are more progressive than countries in Europe and even the USA. For example: Here in Brazil, we have a free healthcare system that covers the entire population. Since 2010, this system has covered sex reassignment surgeries, along with all psychological and hormonal support all free of charge. We have the biggest LGBT parade in the world. And several famous celebrities here around the world who are openly LGBT like Anitta, Ludmilla and our diva Pabllo Vittar
@vant83
@vant83 Месяц назад
Hope Costa Rica, my country, grows regarding these indexes. I absolutely love it and hope it gets back to its course as a more socially progressive country, a pioneer in the region regarding social, economic and environmental rights, and with very strong democratic institutions. In our case, it is a struggle that started in 1987, on a time in which social rejection and was abysmal...and hasn't ended with the achievement of (mostly) egalitarian rights and, as in many places: cultural change is still catching up to legal changes. Acceptance of course varies strongly between urban and (most) rural areas, from my perception and knowledge of the country, places like the municipalities of Montes de Oca, Belén or Curridabat (and with them, most of our Central Valley, to a certain degree, even its rural parts), which have high standards of living and a very-well educated population, are places where barely someone will raise an eyebrow when having an LGBTQI couple as neighbours, but other, much poorer municipalities (and I'd add, those with a very high percentage of Evangelical Christians, or other vhighlyconservative churches) are by a stark contrast less accepting. However, it will rarely something that would result in violence, as the general Costa Ricans are not very outspoken in expressing their opinions. Anyway, I think everything keeps on getting better accross the whole country.

Brazil is progressing way more for gays and lesbians, but trans people unfortunately not so much (more than US definitely). We still struggle with feminine gays, here masculine gays are respected a lot. Comparing what is happening in US right now and some countries in Europe, Brazil is becoming more safe (the irony third world country becoming more safe for us). I am from Brazil and still live here. Things are getting much better over the years, but prejudice is still frequent. Most people aren't homophobic, but the ones who are have a lot of influence on the population, specially religious people. But I do expect that Brazil will be one of the gay-friendliest countries in the world in 10 or 20 years. Discrimination seems more apparent on social media than in real life, as many are afraid of being arrested for physically assaulting or insulting LGBT people because of our antidiscrimination laws. By the way, the less flamboyant you are, the less most people will care about your sexuality and you will be more respected.

Most Latin American countries are left leaning so it makes sense how progressive they are
@eduardooliverosanca4138
@eduardooliverosanca4138 4 месяца назад
Do you mean that left is good and right is bad? For example, Cuba shouldn't be on this list, why? Because everything is manipulated by the government. Even the Cenesex belongs to the government and the government manipulates everything and they let you see what they want. No matter what they write or say in their illegal constitution. LGTB people in Cuba are segregated by the government and any meeting or manifestation of any kind that isn't approved by them, is not permitted. Two men or two women kissing and demonstrating their love on the street is not allowed. I can extend myself but don't want. In a country that is ruled by a communist party, that do not aloud any other form of government, is impossible to have any kind of freedom. All the countries ruled by the left, or that had been ruled by the left, been the left, communism, socialism, like China, Cuba, Russia, etc. there will never exist any form of freedom, regardless the freedom. This is way, Cuba, shouldn't be included here. Talk to all Cubans LGTB around the world.

The current Uruguayan government is right-wing and Uruguay continues to be the most liberal country on the continent. The Far left is just as bad as the Far right, at their core they are the same and simply desire unquestioned power. BUT generally liberal or center left countries seem to be the most progressive on human rights. All maps eventually go out of date however and as RU-vid videos cannot be edited after they are posted, the best we can hope for is to have the content accurate at the time of posting.
