Korean-Dominican? Chinese-Cuban? Yes they do exist! According to the last census -- almost half a million Asian Latinos now live in the U.S. Emmy Award winning Reporter Tinabeth Piña explores this ethnic mix!

As a whole yes, but individually no thats the difference. Americas Canadians and so forth can say the same thing that they are a mix of everything as a whole
Theres nothing complex about latino. Its an American ethnicity not a race. It emcompass every back ground. It isnt even used in latin american countries as an identity typical racial terms are. Every latin american country is diverse, but so are non latin american countries as well
Ram THom Yeah but people not a lot of countries mix with different races, even in the US, people still have negative outlook on interracial dating or mixing .... Latin countries on the other hand are vastly mixed! Check out other videos or do more research. ..
Why can't the Japanese be the largest in the United States outside Japan, because Japanese really love American culture on TV, American movies and English heard in anime, I don't see any popularity of brazilian culture in Japanese mass media and brazil is not an English country that it doesn't make any sense and so many Japanese largely learn English, right? Because America is the first to have the Japanese after the philipines and, before brazil, but since I love the Japanese people thinking there are more in the English speaking countries for a lot of them learning English and move to English countries, but Australia is the closest English country to Japan and I don't know why this didn't get millions so maybe this one should have millions in Australia today of this era, since it's too much money to go to another world of far away English countries like the United States and I"m not sure why Canada didn't get many Japanese and North America should be the largest Japanese ethnic strong presence in the world today of this era, not in latin america and even though peru almost has the largest, but has thousands, but I wouldn't mind there is a large strong ethnic presence majority of Chinese or Koreans in brazil if happened, but the Chinese were in brazil for 200 years and it should have millions by now, right? You are not Puerto Rican the only way you are Puerto Rican is if you have a mix of Taino Indians Spaniard an African blood . Stop trying to claim my country because you'll never be a Boricua
ragejinraver you’re wrong. Her nationality is puerto rico. Nationality refers to the country in which you a citizen of. I’m Mexican - American. Mexico is where my heritage lies, and I was born and raised in American. I am just as American as she is Puerto Rican. Don’t be an ignorant ass.
@@alondraguzman9952 BS nationality is not where your citizenship is . As a Mexican go live in japan and try to pull that Japanese is just a nationality BS . See what will happen to you . You know damn well am telling the true . It's literally in your blood so stop it I don't know where this new form of thinking came from but it needs to stop
@ragejinraver what you are describing is literally what nationality is. your nationality is where you hold citizenship, but it's not the same as ethnicity which is what you seem to be thinking of. You can be ethnically Japanese, but Mexican in nationality and vise versa. You're just straight up wrong.
It’s interesting to me how there are a few countries in South America and Latin America generally, that are not native Spanish speaking, as well as indigenous societies that are not Spanish speaking, but these lands and groups are oft overlooked. Like: Suriname, French Guyana, Aruba, Belize. And the massive indigenous folk of Peru, Ecuador, Central America, and parts of Mexico, amongst others. And Brazil I guess, although as I understand it, Brazil is felt to be Latino but not Hispanic. Even though Portuguese is a language based in the Iberian Peninsula, which was the historical Roman province of Hispania.
@@richlisola1 Why don't you get educated before commenting? Central America you mentioned? Guatemala is the only country in Central America that has lots of indigenous people, go to El Salvador, Nicaragua or Costa Rica, their entire population is mesticized.
Just proves how wrong those people are when they say things like “oh but you don’t look Hispanic, Latin, Dominican, Mexican, etc” like, that’s not really a thing. Even if you look at it reaaally simply: Spanish came to Latin America and brought slaves from Africa, and there’s a HUGE Asian influence in Latin America as well. And some people out here expecting us to all look the same? Loll
Even Hispanic/Latinos that were born in America think they are a race because America made it that way, my mom is Afro Brazilian and one of her friends told her “she couldn’t be both”. To me being Latino means you’re from a Latin country in South America that speaks a Latin language, Spanish or Portuguese, even back than French Canadians were counted as Latinos
+sandinyourshoes Americans...sorry to say but white people in particular(occasionally black Americans too) view you & treat you worse is you aren't speaking English.... even if you CAN speak English but chose not to at the moment. You get ugly stares and rude remarks way too often. They equate your speaking English with you level of intelligence....it is utterly ridiculous. My dad is (Afro-) Dominican but is a chemical engineer for the Navy.... he has a SLIGHT accent and speaks Spanish as much as he can but gets lots of snide remarks for it...Ignorant white people telling him he's "too stupid" to learn english, meanwhile he speaks 4 languages and they only speak 1. Of course, the Irony is lost on them though.
Brandon Cheng now I kind of want to see a pic lmao you got me really intrigued. I am Dominican of west African, Portuguese and Native ancestry but born and raised in the island.

I'm Peruvian and a little italian because of my father , this video is 100% true about Peru . There's a lot of asians living here and made Peru their homeland , Peru is very diverse , we're a mix of different cultures like African , White , Brunette , Indian , Spanish , Italian , Chinese , Japanese , etc . But we are of the same blood and are proud to have been born in this beautiful country , this mix is seen in our food , traditions , celebrations and other things that are a big part of our identity , I had a girlfriend , she was half Peruvian and Chinese , but I broke up with her 2 years ago , anyways I love your video , greetings
Cuba had more Chinese than in the United States. There are three active duty Cuban generals of Chinese descent. Cuba has a monument dedicated to all the Chinese-Cubans that fought against Spain for Independence. Tens of thousands of Chinese also fled to Mexico in the late 1800s and beginning of the 1900s to escape US anti-Chinese racism.
@kr tu - As an absolute number there were more Chinese in Cuba than the US in the latter 19th Century. There were nearly as many Chinese in Mexico, to where many Chinese escaped the terrible racism and indentured servitude in the US. Chinese became very integrated into Cuban and Mexican life largely in markets, restaurants and...laundries. Unfortunately, in the 1930s in Mexico during the Great Depression right-wing Mexican business owners and a Mexican fascist movement called the "Camisas Doradas" (Golden Shirts-sound familiar?) whipped up anti-Chinese racism because the Chinese ran a large percentage of the market stalls in Northern and Central Mexico, and these Mexican businesses wanted to eliminate the competition. Five Mexican states passed anti-miscegination laws making it illegal for Mexicans to marry Chinese. This culminated in armed round ups of thousands of Chinese. Thousands were 'deported' in one night in 1931 and then more to the United States in 1931-32 where they were put in concentration camps, mainly in Arizona. Some were sent to China and others escaped to other parts of the US. Many of the Chinese restaurants in Southwestern USA were established by Chinese deported from Mexico. In Cuba many of the Chinese business people left after the 1959 revolution, many to establish restaurants in New York. But many Chinese working people supported the Cuban revolution and stayed. Today there are three Chinese-Cuban Generals in the Cuban armed forces: Armando Choy, Gustavo Chui, and Moises Sio Wong. History is far more rich and complex than the whitewashed versions we are taught. There is also an interesting history of Chinese indentured servants working in Kentucky, USA in the 1840s to allegedly replace slavery. These Chinese workers most likely brought the first steel making to the United States in what became named the "Bessemer" crucible steel method already in practice in China for hundreds of years before Europe or the US started steelmaking. Also, Chinese were hired as sugarcane plantation workers in Mississippi right after the Civil War. Their Afro-Chinese descendents still live there and in Louisiana to this day.
Felipe Louis Peruvian is a nationality so you can be any race and still be Peruvian. Asian Peruvian, Afro Peruvian, Amerindian Peruvian, White Peruvian, or mixed Peruvian.
I can relate! I am Hmong-Mexican living in the states. It's hard to ever fully relate myself to my ethnic ancestry as I always come across folks who categorize me as a "chinita"
Im Asian Latina by blood - moms side: my grandpa actually from Spain and grandma mestiza Filipino and dads side Asian but I’m born in Canada and raised in America and U.K.! I have a lot of family from my asian side in Brazil.
Ahh I'm Peruvian with distant Japanese lineage and this is so extremely cool to learn that it is more common than I could have imagined. representation, it matters. So thank you.
In my country of Colombia I met a korean guy who lived here most if his life, then emigrated to the States, and now has returned. He is trully an Asian Latino. Peru and Brazil are probably the countries where that particular prescence is the highest.
Liz Figueroa there are many more than people realize. My father is from Mexicali in northern Mexico which had a sizeable Chinese community. In Baja California many Japanese and now Koreans settled there for business. Japanese and Chinese foods are popular there, and it is quite normal to see Mexican Asians. Also in Sao Paulo, Brazil you see many Japanese descendant people. I think this is a group of Latin Americans that have been ignored.
I love this! My grandpa was adopted by a Chinese family in Cuba and Asian culture in the Caribbean is so underrated I wish I could trace our roots back to China like her
¡Bendiciones!
The Korean population in Mexico has been increasing since KIA arrived to Mexico, it's amazing seeing that both complex and rich cultures are interested in each other's.
Aprende tu historia. No te lo digo por ser odioso. Solo como consejo.
I have a coworker who is Chinese, raised in Costa Rica- so she speaks Spanish fluently and lives in Hawaii now and speaks English fluently. She has a Spanish accent, but is full on Chinese. She speaks Spanish, English and Chinese fluently.
It just realized how much Chinese language we speak in Peru without knowing. Like 'chi fan' = 'eat food' or 'Tai pa' = 'big' or 'plenty' when asking to get well served. Thanks Tinabeth! Another topic: Are you interested in any video contribution from the Int. Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany? This year the Netherlands are the guest of honour.
There's plenty of other words we use such as siyao instead of salsa de soya, tamarindo, and even kion which in spanish is actually gengibre. I believe there's a cantonese word as well for side job which means Peru lol
50% Asian (Korean, Filipino, Chinese, Thai, Indian, and Cambodian as far as I know) 25% Latino(Peruvian, Salvadoran, Puerto Rican, Colombia, and Bolivian) 25% European ( Italian, French, Portuguese, Croatian, and Spanish) and 100% proud of my beautiful cultures 😍❤️❤️❤️
Interesting. 👍👍 He reminds me of Alberto Fujimori. He was the President of Peru for 10 years. He has Japanese parents who had him in Lima. Aside from Peru, Brazil also has a significant population of Asians (Japanese), esp. in Liberdade.
I am Colombian and my wife is from the Philippines. Is a wonderful mixed family. I am thankful my family is mixed as i can learn a lot. We live in New Zealand where people tend to mix without much crappy racism
Wow this is so crazy. I'm Australian born Chinese and have only recently learnt about the more diverse cultural identities of other Asian diaspora because there is so much more personal stories shared now through the growth of social media and more common access to smartphones. This video made me so grateful that I'm of Chinese heritage and a Chinese diaspora. I can speak Mandarin and Cantonese (Chinese languages) albeit not fluently but it gives me the chance to connect with people (brother and sisters) from other countries whom have some Asian ancestry because of their past ancestors and it allows me to connect with their host country even much more!
This is a really interesting documentary!! I'm latino and I never knew there were so many asian latinos. It sucks that asian latinos are not represented in spanish media..
"It sucks that asian latinos are not represented in spanish media.." Asian Latinos get plenty of representation in Latin American media. So many celebrities that are both full blooded and mixed, which the latter is when the father is usually the Asian one.
Great video. I'm Japanese-Brazilian and 2018 is the 110th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to this country. I remember as a kid reading a weekly magazine in 1978 in which the cover story was "70th anniversary of Japanese immigration in Brazil" and mentioned that "they've come a long way and today there are about 800.000 Japanese immigrants." And as of 2018 we're like almost 3 million. Indeed a long long way. Saludos to all asian latinos around.
Thank you Tinabeth Piña for uploading this interesting story of these Latin Asians . I'm Samoan Chinese from Independent Samoa , but grew up in the U.S (Hawai'i) .... Back in the day when Samoa was under German rule , they bought over Chinese laborers/coolie's to work the german owned plantations , many inter-married with the local women , had families etc . My Grandfather hails from Shenzhen , Guangdong Province , Southern China . I'm fluent in Samoan & Cantonese . Xiexie / fa'afetai tele lava :)
Im Dominican and Taiwanese and this is such a cool video! I absolutely hate how in Latin America, all Asians are referred to as “chino or China”. I find it disrespectful because it’s almost never used in a positive light.
The one exception to this is the Portuguese-speaking country of Brazil. Asians there are usually "Japanese," regardless whether they are of Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, or Korean origin. But to illustrate your point: Argentine actress María Eugenia Suárez is now more popularly known by her nickname, "la China" Suárez, even though she is actually 1/4 Japanese. Suárez's late Nisei Argentine ("second generation Japanese Argentinian") maternal grandmother was Seiko Mitsumori. La China Suárez's username on Instagram is "sangrejaponesa," or "Japanese blood" - a tribute to her Japanese heritage.
Gracias por este maravilloso video. Thank you for mentioning Filipinos and the Manila Galleons in this video. I've seen several news pieces over the years about Latin Asians but none of them mention my community, which is a shock. We were a colony of Spain for more than 300 years, governed through Mexico City during the first 200 years. There is a Spanish Creole language called Chabacano that is spoken in the Philippines today, which is a testament to our shared history with our Latin American cousins across the Pacific. Abrazos.
Philippine history describes little about Spanish government. The history is focused on struggle of Filipinos against Spain. The galleon trade in the video is eye-opener to know more about trade business during those times.
because AMERICANS want to destroy Spanish colony and they want it. They glorified Noli and Feli as a propaganda more to destroy Catholicism so that their MADE In USA religion will come to create hate and disunity among Christian faith. AMERICANS TO BLAME! THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE TO ALL MADNESS!
I was not in the USA but my Mom was Peruvian. I applied for and took on Peruvian citizenship because I love that country and the beautifully diverse culture it has from the wonderful African to the beautiful Chinese people, Japanese, Koreans. What a fascinating country. I’m so proud of it. Long live harmony and diversity and love for our fellow man.
I am full Peruvian and this is so interesting. I never thought Asian culture would be so present in my country! And I guess that explains why some people believe that I'm part asian even though I technically am not haha
+Eurasian Writer, Sir, you are 100% right. Genetic studies show that Amerindians are an offshoot of the Asiatic N family, so, yes, technically many Hispanics/Latinos are all or almost or half Asian or have some Asian admixture in their DNA along with that of other races (it varies from person to person). It's just that this information is not well-known down south. Many people know they are mixed but they don't really know what they are exactly, hence the ignorance. Plus, as I write, DNA testing, what we have here in North America (AncestryDNA, FTDNA, 23andme, etc.), is not available in LATAM. I believe that as soon as it becomes available to the LATAM masses, perceptions will start to change. Latinos as a whole will become more aware of who they really are and this may help to reduce or even eradicate their racism towards each other ... their self-hate (we can always hope!). Thanks for posting this comment.
My parents are from Mexico but their grandparents are from Spain, France, and China 🙂 I don't much about them but it would be cool if I could trace back my family history like those people in the video did.
You might be able to using ancestry.com -- they have a world section which researches other countries outside of the U.S. --I'm noy sure how good that part is since I've only used the site for US based searches but it might be worth a shot!
I am a Mexican citizen of Vietnamese parents. I think the problem really is that the US puts all its identity into ancestry. In Latin America, we who are of Asian ancestry walk around in rich neighborhoods and in poor neighborhoods and in all places inbetween and even though we look different, we don't feel we stand out because nobody says anything different, glances over, nor gets surprised if we speak Spanish or anything and in businesses we are just one more customer. It only gets surprising or shocking in the United States because of all the racial or ethnic blocs and classifications.
I grew up with a half Polish-Jewish, half Mexican mother and a half Russian-Kazakh, half Taiwanese father. For me, I grew up with my mom, so I always identified with my Jewish and Mexican heritage. However, nowadays, I identify a lot more with my Taiwanese family as I finally got to meet them not long ago. But it’s weird, you know. Since both of my parents are half white, those genes met in me. Blue eyes, brown hair, light skin. Really the only Asian I have in me is in my face structures, and the Spanish side is pretty much impossible to notice. But I feel proud of all of it, knowing my family all struggled like hell two generations ago, fleeing countries and marrying other refugees to get where we are now.
When i went to college in California, i got to meet a lot of Latin Asians from diferente countries, it was so interesting, so much so that i met and married the love of my life, she is Chinese born and raised in Panamá 🇵🇦, small world. Saludos desde Venezuela 🇻🇪

Hey living, working in NYC is a pot of the world. In the Bronx there was a restaurant that served Chinese food but they also served Cuban food and the severs spoke Spanish, they were Chinese Cuban spoke Chinese also...
I am half Cuban and Puerto Rican. But I have a amount of korean from Puerto Rico that has a long history. And it is true that Asians came from Manila Galleon trade hundreds of years ago and not only Filipinos, but Filipinos were the major first asians latinos but not necessarily.
Funny you've said that....where I come from, Hispanic (CA) talk lots of smack about Asians. But then again, every race talk shit about another race. I love my Mexicans, then again I love Hong Kong in TJ.
