Ha ha you are funny. Just as a side note, try eBay some time for antique religious books, that will put you into bliss :) and, there are a lot of cool Catholic what nots on eBay. Over time, I have collected a few: for example "Springerle" (german) cookie molds (these are used for the Host in the Orthodox Church, FYI. But its an ethnic delicacy from both greek / Slavic cultures). Some AMAZING catholic forms for cookies! The French even do them, but they call them something else. And, there are antique religious medals in real gold (I got obsessed with those about 10 years ago, and still have a few). And, there is even "catholic lace" embroidered with various religious themes (same as the medals for me, I like the odd sample). Some of the old missals have the Feast Day Calendars and a nice RED LEATHER cover. I am not Catholic, but I have been to dozens (countless) Catholic churches and Cathedrals over the history of my life (grew up in Europe, my father was British) and even as Episcopalian, our church is very similar, in some ways its a coin toss. Speaking of which, I have started to email my rectory on a regular basis about various Exorcism related subjects (at the request of the Rector). In due course, I sent your vid on the Timeline of the Church Abuses, it is very calm and rational sounding. More like that would be great! Encore!

Dear Dr.Marshall I only discovered you approximently 1 month or so ago. I work in a factory here in Ireland. I'm a blue collar worker so my work is very monotonous and tedious. I listen to your podcasts constantly throughout the day. I cannot thank you enough for all I've learnt from you. I also have started to read the book of Wisdom to our children at dinner when I get home. Today we meditated on Our Divine Saviour braiding the whip to use in the temple, a meditation from your good self. May Almighty God bless you and your family. You really have made a big difference to my spiritual life.

The biggest downside to the Fr Lasance Missal is that it lacks the Kyriale, while the Angelus Press Missal contains the most common settings from the Kyriale. Pius XI encouraged the laity to learn to sing those parts of the Mass that belong to them, it is much easier to do this with the Kyriale which contains the Gregorian notation for the Common e.g., the Kyrie, Gloria, etc. This is why I prefer the Angelus Press edition.
@mariogeorgiev2932

Very Agree . Another minus for Fr Lascance Missal is there is no Rite of Baptism ,Vespers,Compline . All those are included in the Angelus Press Edition. Also Angelus Press edition contains Rite of Exorcism ,and the Athanasian Creed which is just amazing. Father Lascance is good from the side for the Old Holy Week and some feast which have been removed after 1955 ,3 collect prayers at every Sunday Mass , and as a Mass Book is good . Angelus Press is good not only as a Mass Book ,but as a Prayer Manual contains much much more prayers than Fr Lascance. Father Lascance has very short Evening Prayers compare to Angelus One .One minus thou for Angelus Press there is no Creed in tone II in the Gregorian Notation on the end of the book ,just Credo I,III … As I Mass Book I do recommend Fr Lascance because of the Old Rubrics before 1955-1950 and its easy to follow ,Angelus Press I do recommend for a Prayer Manual contains much more as prayers outside Mass .

I have come to believe that the liturgy since Vatican II has lost its meaning. I am ready to learn some latin and go back to the beginning. We as a Church do not promote the Catholic faith by making the liturgy more like everything else (e.g. music (swing, r&b, gospel, hip hop) and feel good preaching, video screens, gymnasium architecture, casual dress, etc.). Our Catholic Mass should be unlike anything else that we know.

I'm convinced--it's the Fr. Lasance missal for me! Many years ago, I asked my mother about the mass once being in Latin. She dug into the back of a dresser drawer and produced her mother's missal, "My Sunday Missal" by Fr. Stedman, printed in the 1930s. I wore it out and have bought replacements online. ABBREVIATED--just Sundays and holy days with a few additional prayers--so it may provide a good introduction to the traditional Latin mass and it slips easily into pocket or purse.

Went online to buy one. Mid March is when the new Missal will be available. It's being reprinted from the 1945 edition with some new improvements. Just a heads up. FSSP are taking back orders only. Amazon's out like most places. An EBay search came up empty. Which would be vintage most likely and some clown will charge $200.00. Be patient and Mid March is the time. It's really glad to see my fellow Catholics are buying Missals off the shelves so fast they need to reprint them. Excellent and Positive sign. God Bless. 🙏

I still have my Saint Pius X Daily Missal with a 1956 Imprimatur by Francis Cardinal Spellman that I used from that very year right through high school ending in 1966. Of course, Vatican II came to a close in 1965 and by the time I was in college in the late 60s, the sacred and transcendent Latin Mass had ceased to exist in my Diocese. I'm going to purchase some "New Roman Missals" for my grandchildren and hope that one day they will come to cherish theirs as I have cherished mine all these 56 years since the Council that changed everything ended. I use the Baronius press missal. It is the best of the lot. The Baronius Press is better than the Angelus Press and is a 1962. Real leather, and has all the readings where you need it to be. Also, BP also has the full page devoted to Latin unlike the AP. For those who have studied Latin, I would suggest the BP missal over any of the other options.

I am a product of the Latin Mass being an alter boy in the 1960's. When the change happened and it was very slow but little by little things changed. I longed for the Latin Mass and all of its celebrations that have been forgotten with Vat2, This pandemic shut down caused me to search and I found an SSPX nearby. We have been attending Mass her since Thanksgiving and its like a new awakening, a rebirth, a coming home. I feel I have been lied to and cheated out of my traditions for 40 years. I was told the Latin Mass doesnt exist anymore...I have alot of work to do and feel that I am a new Catholic. With prayers I should be up to speed in a couple years

I use the small, pocket-size Fr. Steadman missal from the early 60s, which I still saved from my childhood. It doesn’t have the propers in Latin, but its diminutive size feels precious in my hands, and allows me to enter the service effectively since I am more focused on "praying the mass" rather than fumbling with ribbons for the readings. In the NYC church I attend, and which offers the Latin mass daily, there are Latin-English handouts for the propers on Sundays and special feasts, which are made available for those using the thin red-covered missal booklets (popular with many). Also, the priest first offers the epistle and gospel properly in Latin, and then again in English just before the sermon. On Sundays, I might use the St. Andrew Missal or the Angelus Press RC 1962 missal, since it seems to accord more with the transcendent beauty of the occasion, and these contain the Vespers for Sunday (in case I attend that later)... but the small one tends to travel more consistently with me.

I have two copies of the St. Joseph missal, circa 1957. Very similar to the Lasance, so many beautiful illustrations and explanations for each Sunday and the Saints. But it does cross reference. But with all the hands touching it in our family, they can usually be found on eBay for around twenty bucks. It has a few minor differences in the Holy Week but our FSSP parish did the more ancient Holy Week stuff this last year and no one had a missal that followed perfectly.

The problem with the St. Joseph Missals are that they only have Latin for the Ordinary of the Mass, not the propers. However, they were the most popular hand missals back then; it's too bad the Catholic Book Publishing Co. (now based in New Jersey) went Novus Ordo.

Dr M, you mentioned Fraternity of St Peter, isn't it true that the Fraternity would never had existed without the witness of Archbishop Lefebvre and the SSPX? I'd be fascinated (as a fellow Anglican convert) if you and Timothy Gordon discussed the SSPX, which now seems like 'Catholic home' to me after 5 years in the N.O. church.
@deusimperator

When Lefebvre by his actions was excommunicated latae sententiae by ordaining bishops without Papal approval priests who wished to stay loyal to Rome formed the FSSP. It was not his witness, but his treachery which caused the FSSP to be formed. Are we going to give Lefebvre kudos for other breakaway groups such as the Sedevacantist SSPV and SSPX-MC to form too? How about the whole host of conspiracy peddling half-wits that make up a large segment of SSPX pew sitters - are you going to give lefebvre kudos for them too? As NATO defense minister once mentioned to me, watch out without Rome they will splinter just like the protestants.... and they have. Some have rejoined the Church other have gone their own separate way and formed their own churches
@marcokite
@marcokite 5 лет назад
@@deusimperator - the Archbishop was loyal to the Holy Catholic Church, unlike poor Paul VI, the latter admitted at the end of his life that the smoke of satan had entered the Church. the excommunications were invalid under canon law btw. and no we are not going to credit the Archbishop for the other groups you mention, that was an easy one..lol ...as to 'half-wits' you claim are in SSPX pews, i would say firstly that no Catholic Christian should describe fellow Christians as such and secondly all the people i have met in SSPX chapels are very sane rounded stable human beings. the dude at NATO is entitled to his opinions, I would concede it's a shame traditional Catholics are not more united. however the ultimate blame must rest with Vat II, Paul VI and JPII.

@@marcokite His excommunication was latae sententiae under Canon Law. Lefebvre has to take credit for causing confusion and chaos and leading groups out of the Church. SSPX-MC, SSPX-SO, SSPV are all breakaways caused by his treachery. The Lefebvrists are extremely anti-semitic in their publication. Look at the publication run by the SSPX and their half-witted pew sitters... Protocols of the Elders of Zion would be considered reading material in those circles. I attended SSPX masses at one time, at there was alway an anti-semitic clown spewing some nonsense Hitler =good Jew = satan spawn. Oh, and I am an ethnic Shephardi. Even Lefebvre bought into the anti-Semitic nonsense
@marcokite
@marcokite 5 лет назад
@@deusimperator - the excommunication was un-canonical as consecrating bishops with good reason, to be blunt, is not schismatic and not cause for excommunication. your use of the word 'treachery' is inaccurate as the only treachery was in attacking the liturgy in the 1960s and 70s to make it less Catholic in respect to the Mass being a sacrifice. Thank God for the Archbishop's courage and witness. i can only repeat that referring to fellow Christians as half-witted is not a Catholic Christian act. i have never come across any racism, only very well balanced, kind, generous people who love the Catholic faith.

I am relatively new to all of this, and a kind older woman showed me her missal and taught me how to use it so I got the one she had. I also recently found a missal by the Catholic Press 1953/1954 ...ITS ALL IN ENGLISH! But follows the Latin. And it has some illustrations of the parts of the mass and the vestments etc...which I haven’t tried to use yet, but it has beautiful photos and illustrations throughout. I am now more enlightened ! Thank you so much. Also I have a really hard time following the Latin because it goes so fast and I am just learning ...so I find myself jumping over to the English very often because I am afraid to miss the intimacy of what is taking place. Epistle and Gospel are read in English from the pulpit just prior to the homily at my FSSP parish. It's a bit confusing and difficult at first, but just keep at it, and it will come. I use to have the Fr. Lasance's Hand Missal, and gave it to someone new with Latin Mass. Now, I am longing for.another copy as I miss the extra stuff in it. I do have the Missal from Angelus Press, but not really satisfied with it. I cannot afford any new Missals today......UPDATE: I now have a new Fr. Lasance Missal, and get to enjoy it again....for personal prayer, since I cannot get to a Latin Mass which is 7 miles away here in Pensacola area. The 1964 Interim Missal also have the Latin for the important parts of the Mass, though the readings are all in the vernacular.

Non sequitur (except some comments): I’m quite happy that the TLM was saved from extinction, but when I see someone argue that the TLM would have been extinguished if not for the SSPX, I have to wonder if Thomas Aquinas-or any other moral theologian-would agree that the ends can be used to justify the means... Also, if the end accomplished was good, but the means employed was evil, can others benefit from the end in good conscience, or is it tainted on account of the evil means used to attain the end?
@TheWarlover12
@TheWarlover12 5 лет назад
I wondered that, too. But, after talking to a priest about it, there doesn't seem to be a clear definitive evil by the SSPX regarding the Mass, and once all the sides have their say. It seems that other issues protracted certain evils. Like the SSPX fighting for the Timeless Mass was fine, but maybe the consecration of three bishops instead of one, wasn't. Of course, the Mass versus bishops succession are two different matters. I guess the question is, what is the relationship of the Mass to canon law, and which takes precedent: the Mass, or Canon Law. Which one is supreme? Once that might be defined, then it might be clear which is more necessary and pinnacle to the Faith. So, it might become apparent who stands on solid moral ground in the debate, and how the historical context of the situation played out on later events. BTW, I really don't know how much the SSPX actually helped preserve the Mass. They may have had a good part, but not singularly.

My big issue is that my eyesight is Not Great, so I wind up choosing missals based on whether or not I can read it. I love the New Marian Missal that the CMRI are publishing, (yes, I know, they're sede, but I ordered it from the FSSP,) because, while everything else is tiny and unreadable, the Common of the Mass is HUGE, and it's small and inexpensive to replace so I travel with it. Baronius and St. Andrew are super-hard to read. Angelus is about in the middle. Lasance is a bit hard to read just because the letters are so close together, but given how huge that book already IS, I'm not surprised. "Blessed Be God" is pretty easy to read, but ONLY has what's required for Sundays and HDOs in the US. HDOs that are only required in other English-speaking countries are not present. But it's small and fits in my purse, so huzzah. The downside to Baronius and Angelus is that, if you attend a PCED parish, you don't have the Holy Week stuff, since the pre-1962 Holy Week has been used the last few years. I'd rather have too much than too little, but that's just me.

FSSP parishes/chapels that provide missals use different missals. The FSSP bookstore (FraternityPublications.com) sells the Baronius Press (not Angelus Press) Daily Missal (1962) and the St. Joseph Daily Missal (1953). Some provide copies of the St. Edmund Campion Missal Hymnal (1962 - Sundays and major feasts only); others provide copies of the Angelus Press (1962) missal Dr. Marshall described. Many will have only copies of the red paperback missal which contains only the commons. For those who do not attend daily Mass often, the Campion missal and hymnal is worth checking out. It is larger and heavier, but it is much less expensive, has larger type, has all the propers in one place, and includes a hymnal.

@@jerryeckert106 Thank you ... our parish had at one time or another sold the baronus and the angelus press ones, respectively ... not the others .. and actually I asked our pastor about the Campion and he said it was the first he learned of it ... due to distance I can't get to the FSSP parish most of the week so ... the Campion may be good for me who usually uses the Virgomaterdie and the red covered missal because I find those missals too challenging to use

Is the Fr. Lasance Missal pre 1955? Does it have the pre '55 traditional non-revised Holy Week? Edit: Question answered toward end of video. Pre '55 Holy Week is included. That's a big plus! Also... St. Joseph's name being removed from the Canon by Paul the Sixth?! One has to wonder, why in the world would he do that? St. Joseph is Christ's earthly father who lovingly raised Him, protected the Holy Family, trained Him in carpentry. Just think of all the time they spent together and all the experiences they shared! It seems that st. Joseph doesn't get enough respect or recognition, he is also a Terror to Deamons according to exorcists. In the old churches there was always a side Altar, one dedicated to Blessed Mother and one to St. Joseph. Since many or even most of the magnificent, beautiful & spiritually inspiring High Altars were sacked, destroyed, cut to pieces, this significance has been largely lost. St. Joseph, Patron of the Church; Ora pro nobis!🙏

The best way to avoid the cross-referencing flips during mass is to set it up with the ribbons before mass. If I need to mark a page but don't have a ribbon for it, it will use a sticky or prayer card. I used the Saint Andrew 1961 Missal for awhile but got the Angelus Press 1962 missal and am happy with it. One thing I really like with the St. Andrew is the Morning Prayers section. It contains a few beautifully written prayers and also the Prime ordinary.

My ribbons are set. The problem in Angelus Missal it is hard to foresee when the lections are missing (see p. for Epistle), and you have to flip back to the readings printed elsewhere in the Missal (eg Ember lessons).

Joseph Pietras how do you set up your missal before hand when sometimes the priest uses readings other than that which is in the missal? The last few Sundays after Pentecost are examples. The priest at my church used the readings of so many weeks after Epiphany instead of the ones after Pentecost. I didn’t know that until I actually went to church and saw the readings in the bulletin.🤭

I've been using the Angelus press version for 10 years or so, right enough for certain Masses you have to flip to another page for the Collect for example. It's a help to prepare the Mass in advance and use a couple of "Holy pictures " as page markers. But yes, it can be a bit distracting. Some beautiful Prayers for before and after Communion which I suppose are in the other Missel.

Hopefully Catholics will only have to worry soon about missal choices or the quality of sermons, not tribal idols being erected in churches. I've long used the St Andrew Daily Missal. Mine was from the time so is either 1937 (with an intro by Abp Arthur Hinsley) or 1940 or 1944, but barring the supplement for local (Irish Feasts) is practically identical to the St Bonaventure Publications reprint available, although sometimes the paper in reprints can be heavier, ribbons too. The St Andrew Missal has superb historical and liturgical texts, particularly setting the scene for the Mass and Office for each Sunday. Fr Lasance is great for learning the Mass, but as to explain what a particularly Sunday or Feast Day means, not so good, but still a fine book. One downside is that Epistles and Gospels tend never to be repeated if common between days, so much page flipping for some weekday Feasts.

If you are older like me and your eyesight is not great, you may wish to see a copy of the Fr Lasance Missal before you buy it. I find it unreadable because of the font size and style. Ended up giving mine away to a younger person. The St Andrew Daily Missal uses a bold, block font that is much easier on my old eyes. The prayers in the front of the Missal and interspersed throughout, in Latin and English, are also of great value. You may run into problems during Holy Week because this Missal is pre-1962, so that is something to be aware of.

I was surprised that you did not review the Baronius Press Missal. It is the one the FSSP puts out. I use it and have for about 7 years now. I also attend the Latin Mass in an FSSP parish. The Baronius Press missal is much like the Angelus Press missal, but it has etching pictures at the beginning of major feast days. There are no illustrations to guide you through the Mass, though. If a reading is repeated for a feast day, it, too, references the reading to a different feast, but it tells you exactly what page it's on so you can turn to it quickly. For the ordinary of the Mass, the Latin is on the left page and the English is on the right page, full page....both the same size. For the readings, the two languages are on the same page with the Latin smaller than the English. The gilding on the edges of my pages also got water spots and made the gold spotty. It's impossible to keep it dry when the asperges happens every week. Also, my binding tore. I can tuck my collection money in there for safekeeping until the basket comes by....;-)

SSPX and FSSP are very confusing. Please explain the difference and how the church recognizes them.
@deusimperator
@deusimperator 5 лет назад
Most of the SSPX are Sedes. I would not attend an SSPX mass as some of the priests are outright heretics. Many priests do not accept any bishop ordained after 1970 to be validly ordained meaning that they are the only true Catholics around. Priests in the SSPX USA have instructed Catholics not to attend the ordinary form of the mass and those who do are not fulfilling their Sunday obligation. Most who attend the SSPX masses like sitting in the peanut gallery and sniping at everything. Their media newspapers are more likely to distort anything the pope or cardinals say or do. Avoid the SSPX like the plague. The SSPX is full of conspiracy theory nutters. I have attended SSPX masses, my mother's cousin was the influential in starting the SSPV breakaway group. The whole SSPX SSPV SSPX-MC SSPX-SO groups are toxic. Stay away from these people.
@minorityvoice9253
@minorityvoice9253 5 лет назад
Well both these people explained parts of the differences. The SSPX was founded by Archbishop Lefevre for the sole purpose of the formation of priests. The orders mission is strictly priestly formation. FSSP was part of the SSPX was broke away from them as they did not want to co tune to stand the ground for the clarity to be infused into some of the ambiguous documents of the pastoral 2nd Vatican II which had blurred some of the clear doctrines of the faith, which we can see the fruits of today. The sspx were excommunicated but that is lifted. The problem now is regularization of the priests under an ordinary or bishop. The society does not have juridical authority in a diocese outside of the bishop of that diocese. We see today though that bishops ordained by a communist agency as in China have now been granted regularization without autonomy from Rome and must conform the authority of the Communist ruling party. This is far worse than any SSPX dispute over document clarity and emphasis on the primacy of tradition over novelty.
@marcokite
@marcokite 5 лет назад
another response to add to the confusion! the FSSP would not even exist if it were not for the witness of Archbishop Lefebvre and the SSPX, FSSP was created only to take people away from SSPX, not a great start. the FSSP are good trad priests of course. please ignore comments below stating that SSPX are 1/ heretics and 2/ sedevacantists, completely and 100% untrue on both counts. thank God for the SSPX.
@deusimperator
@deusimperator 5 лет назад
@@marcokite Some of the priest are indeed heretics. SSPX USA has asked that Catholic not attend the Ordinary form of the liturgy as they will not be fulfilling their Sunday obligation. THAT IS A HERESY!!! The SSPX only pays lip service to the pope. Many SSPX priests are Sedevacantists. FSSP was created to take away people form SSPX???? Why is SSPX the true church and your bishop Fish O' Fillet is now pope??? SSPX are priests of some new religion??? This is the problem with SSPX pew sitters.

deusimperator You are totally wrong. No SSPX priest is sedevacantist or else they wouldn’t left like “the nine”. In fact, I’m the Society has probably done thr most to refute sedevacantism. They are not heretics and not schismatics. Yes, their masses are illicit and they are wrong about the New Mass being illicit. I agree that people shouldn’t attend their masses regularly (although it does fulfill the Sunday and Holy Day obligation) but not for the reason that they are “heretics”.

Grew up with the Latin Mass and use the 1962 Missal which I like because of the prayers, calendar,etc. However, , for newbies attending a Mass did you know there's also an app on your phone you can use? It doesn't explain as much as the Missal but easy to follow. We attend a Sunday low Mass, and the only times the app has been wrong us when sometimes Father varies the Epistle and Gospel readings. Last week for example he chose to use the NOVUS Gospel of Jesus Baptism . However, I do like using the Missal also. The app is called IMass and you just click on the Missale on the bottom of the app.

It seems that those pastors interested in promoting the Latin Mass don't do a very good job of "selling" it to their parishioners. We need to be educated -- very few of us still alive are well-versed in the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass, or in the Novus Ordo Latin Mass for that matter.
