Plenary I - Advocacy in Action: Latinas in the Fight for Voting Rights featured a panel discussion among Teresa Cordova, professor of urban planning and policy and director of the Great Cities Institute at the University of Illinois, Chicago; Miranda Galindo, supervising counsel for LatinoJustice PRLDEF; Genny Castillo, regional engagement director for the Southern Economic Advancement Project; Celina Avalos Jaramillo, advocacy campaign strategist at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. Cinthia Flores, president of the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, moderated the discussion.
This panel focused on:
(i) highlighting the current social and legal barriers Latino/x/e individuals face to voting.
(ii) discussing why the barriers to voting matter, and (iii) finding creative solutions to expanding and amplifying the Latinx vote.
"Latina Futures: Transforming the Nation through Law & Policy" took place at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center on January 20 and 21, 2024. The symposium was designed by a national, multi-generational planning committee and sponsored by the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, UCLA Chicanx Latinx Law Review, and Latina Futures 2050 Lab.
