Sirena is a song about LGBTQ+, its a story about a gay growing up in a homophobic family but at the end he was accepted by his father. Gloc 9 usually write songs that has social relevance.

I hope you didnt miss the last part. When Gloc 9 narrated how the gay son was the only one left to take care of his father when he was already sick. Gays in Philippines are lovingly called Sir/Reyna ( sir/queen) referring to gays who love to dress up like a queen, also because the Philippines male culture of being "Macho" having a gay child, fathers consider having a gay child an insult to his masculinity and would sometime punished their kids by dunking them in a water filled drum, whenever the father catch them acting out, so some gays later in their life talk about their stories, explained that they got so used to the punishment that they became a siren or mermaid being in the water all the time :)

"sirena" which is derived Spanish word have 3 different meanings in Tagalog and other Filipino dialect depending on usage 1) sirena also pertains to mermaids 2) sirena also.meant an alarm like an ambulance's or firetruck siren 3) thirdly and recent in modern Filipino culture --sirena is also another slang word for gay person specifically male homosexuals

Basically, the chorus says, " i am a mermaid, no matter what they say, I am beautiful. I am a mermaid, no matter what they do, my flag stands strong." And then, he narrates how muscly arms hold him down, & he can stay long getting his head dunked in a drum of water bcoz he's not totally accepted by society as gay. He uses this as a positive way to say he is a mermaid regardless. 🔥

when you realize that being a "sirena" also means that the father is submerging him/her in a drum of water as punishment because of being the way he/she is, the chorus just makes me sad :

My apologies I posted on a previous reaction. THE ORIGIN of GAY MERMAID CONNECTION. The first time I heard sirena (mermaid) was referred to "Gays" in the Philippines was on a comedy film starring comedian Joey De Leon in the early 80s. In one scene an angry father is torturing his son (Joey) by dipping him in a drum filled with water. The father would then raise him and ask him "Are you a MAN or a WOMAN?" In the end the very wet and angry son defiantly declares-- "SERENA AKO!" (I'M A MERMAID!). Today in the Philippines Gays has achieved so much acceptance and respecct.

Gloc 9 is a living legend. He is the first Filipino rapper who does quattro tempo.

Sirena in Tagalog means two things, Mermaid, or Alarm as well. Anyway, Im glad youve featured this song! This is one of my favorite Gloc9 songs. It speaks about pressures and experiences growing as LGBTQ. Gloc9 is indeed a very talented artist. His lyrics are very relatable, timely and realistic.

I was looking forward for Efra to read the last part, it is the most heartfelt message of the song. It is a sweet ending. About how his father who had always been beating 'him' up since when he was young finally apologize for all the wrong things he had done to his childhood.

It originates from a joke. In a father's attempt to drown his son's gayness away, he used drum of water. Each time he submerge and emerge his son's head from the water, he asked if he's a man or gay. Twice his son answered that he's gay. The 3rd time he drowned him longer hoping it will do the trick but to his surprise he answered "Sirena na ako." Im a mermaid. Because its something majestic.

The song is a story about a young gay lad who has a big heart but his father couldn't accept that he is gay so he was always beaten by him. Ako'y isang sirena is how he describes himself as being beautiful inside out as a person., I'm a mermaid if you translate the title in English. At the end of the song, the gay person actually takes care of his father when he got sick so even with all those beatings and maltreatment he is the one who stood by his father when help was needed the most.
