This song is composed glorifying Lord Ganapati (the remover of obstacles).... Divine song and Divine singing by yesudas.. The violinist is great ! The song is composed somewhere during late 1700s in Sanskrit ... It is 300-350 years old.. The tune was set back then... Composed by Mutthuswamy Diskshithar.. Today's Classical Indian Singers carry on that ancient tradition of 3000+ years... The counting is traditionally called "Talam". This song is composed using Adi Talam (Beat type : "Adi").. It is a 8 count beat... These Songs are part of ancient indian temple traditions... So most likely they do not do it for the sake of money.. He sings in Movies - he is a famous singer - he makes a lot of money there... These songs are sung for connection with the divine... They do it for personal satisfaction and not money....

Ok so I feel like I have to explain the time cycle, the one used here is an 8 beat time cycle called "Adi Talam" in Carnatic music. And the raag or Ragam (in Carnatic) used here is called "Hamsadhwani" (Cry of the Swan) a pentatonic scale comprising the notes [Sa Ri Ga Pa Ni Sa] = [ C D E G B C ], he even sings the Raag's name in the song at 12:50, as the composer of the song, Mutthuswami Dikshitar, always weaves the Raag's name into his compositions as a signature. The song sung here is called "Vatapi Ganapathim" a religious composition (as are almost all the compositions in South Indian Carnatic music) devoted to the Hindu God Ganesha. at 13:10 he starts the improvisation part of the piece, where he uses the Swaras (Solfege) Pa Ga Ri Sa Ri and comes back to the "chorus" of the song "Vatapi Ganapathim", then again he improvises on the Swaras in the Raag and does the same. Also this is just one song, out of probably 6 to 8 more in the concert 😂😭

It’s so engaging to see how you two experience this musical masterpiece, as total foreigners to this divine performance but open to observe, notice the different components, enquire, realise there is an inexplicable system in it and enjoy it all. What you perhaps don’t see are the different forms of percussion. And the profoundness of the singer, a Catholic Christian, singing a Hindu hymn in a way that enhances it to celestial heights. That’s the magnificence of the ancient school of Carnatic music. Now you need to see the magic that happens when this music comes together with an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer who adds her emotive expressions, her beauty and rhythmic movements to help interpret and narrate the story.

Classical songs are sung sitting down never standing up. In India people always sing sitting down. It became a fashion I think in the 90s onwards. We didn't have pop or rock stars. Movie songs were the trend. Everyone used movie songs in parties, birthdays, weddings appropriate for the occasion. Indian singing foundation begins with classical raags. One needs to understand the notes thoroughly to move forward. He is sing the letters of the notes Sa, Ray, Ga, ma, pa, dha, ni,

Though they may not be exposed to carnatic classical, their analysis of the style of singing is quite good. Their scanning of the singer is quite precise and accurate 1. Sings in own tylor mad scale 2. Effortlessly 3. Uses layran to create percussion 4. Breathes from the abdomen and not from chest 5. Is a magician of voice that merits a study. Observations are cent percent correct and Kudos for that. He is the baritone male god of singing. He has fetched 8 national awards, 42 film fare awards and has recorded 50000+ songs in more than 12 languages. You rightly recognised his genius without an iota of exposure to the person or the singing culture. Your proficiency in your field and analysis of music too is remarkable. Great job!!!

To begin with, its absolutely endearing to know of the sheer ardour that you both young hearts share for music. Hearty kudos for keeping up the spirit. With my humble understanding and utmost devotion towards classical music let me acknowledge the evident fact that INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC IS INCOMPARABLE. There are so many respective genres, those which are highly influenced from the indian musical system as well as others in the field of music , which could to an extent provide hightened emotional states. It could bring forth an elevated feeling but Indian music, particularly classical music in a word is DIVINELY TO ITS CORE. But the intricacy within the intensity of emotions studied in indian classical is out of the world phenomenon altogether. The two canopy of music that of CARNATIC AND HINDUSTHANI from the very root of Indian classical music , is similar in its element but branches out in exquisite flairs when it comes to rendition and presentation. Both CLASSICAL MUSIC AND DANCE in india is considered and revered as the doorway to divine. So its soaked in spiritual esse. It is been scientifically proved that Indian classical music as well as dance could cure rather heal, both physiological as well as psychological conditions. Its rightfully often connoted as the elixir of psyche . It is this firm foundation driven like an iron peg on which even the so called indian film music and albums are based and because its derived of classical profoundness, the so called popular music in the country is also thriving and shining as of the moon. Also to your information the beautiful structure of the classical music or dance does not prevent improvisations or individual artistic liberties at all. The structure is alike a healthy physique upon which the character could be developed with the expertise and talent of a musician. DR. KJ Yesudas is one great prodigy of music the world have ever experienced. A listener could easily compehend that from the performance even without contexts. Usually in classical concerts a composition crafted in a particular raga is presented and the combination of notes sung are improvised by the artists on the spot. Now you may wonder that its still within the bounds of the concept of raagam/raag , so i would suggest you to consider the raagam/ raag like a vast abyss within the colossal ocean of Indian classical music, the ever deepening abyss provides space like any other ,it is only the matter of your perception and level of mastery which says how far you can fetch. In gist, The scope of improvisation is ever augmenting. Its simply a misconception that it isnt. Its quite the paradox of life , that which has a stable structure will be the most freely flourishing. Do check out Indian classical dances as well and listen more , just let yourself immerse in the music, thats the sure way to percieve better. keep up the exploration intact. Thank you .

In Carnatic music there is a lot of improvisation going on, well within the confines of the raagam and timescale of that composition. Improvisation can happen when the singer is well trained and has a very good support crew. The percussion has to keep the timescale and reach where the singer wants them to. Violinist must follow closely. Singer shall improvise only if they have the confidence to not go off rails and bring it all back to the original composition. And the singer is enunciating the musical notes for the percussion, violin, veena, etc to follow.

Love the authentic nonplussed expressions of the girl. This is an esoteric genre that isn't understood in an offhand manner. Try listening to different artistes singing the same song "vathapi ganapathim bhaje". Then, maybe, just maybe, you might get an idea about it. Fyi, the song was written and set to the raga hamsadhwani by a poet born about 250 years ago. Muthuswamy Dikshitar, went on to become one of the most prolific and revered lyricist/composers of Carnatic music. The rhythm, thaala, called aadhi thaala goes with a count of eights. One clap, three finger counts, clap, flip, clap, flip to make a total of eight.

This is called “Carnatic Music” , an Indian classical music, mainly sung through compositions from the Hindu Sanatana dharma. There are plenty forms of this type of music but emphasis is always on the vocals and it’s a school of learning to control vocals with the Sruti, Swara & Raga, the 3 imperative prerequisite for classical singing. Dr Yesudas, sings even now at 81 and is an exponent of music. You can find more details on the internet on both Carnatic music and Yesudas, the singer. I personally loved your interest, surprise and analysis of the music and the singer himself, a living legend in India, not just South India.

What you heard is a song invoking Ganesha. The form is Carnatic (Indian) Basically it is formed 7 words Sa, Ri, Ga Ma pa Da Ni in different combinations. Each combination is called a Raga. There are different combinations of sound produced by hand on hand or hand on thigh called thala. The words formed together using raga and thala into a song is called Pallavi
