I once heard someone describing the resonance of a viola d'amore by talking about the way a violin or viola will echo and reverb in a cathedral. She then said that the viola d'amore brings its own cathedral with it, which I liked.

Somewhat unrelated: It's interesting how she holds a french bow like a german bass bow. Are there german bows for cellos? I've never seen one. I'm curious since barytons look like elaborate cello-piano hybrids.

I believe the sympathetic strings were removed from western instruments as ensemble sizes increased as things can get a bit muddy sounding. Indian classical instruments still have them though!
@Gongchime
@Gongchime 5 месяцев назад
The gamba instruments couldn't project to the back of larger and larger halls or above louder and bigger ensembles so they switched from gut to metal strings, from an upright position to more angled, and to an overhand bowing technique with tighter bow hairs in order to "project." Music from gamba played on cellos, violas, and violins in intimate settings are uncomfortably loud.

It's the boat car problem. A boat car is infinitely cooler than a boat or a car but it's much more expensive to produce, much more likely to break as it has more moving parts and much more expensive to repair as it is a specialty item.

The noble English Language should not be judged on the basis of the quaint antipodean accent of the short-haired beauty… As to that ludicrous instrument, belonging to an age when the filthy rich travelled in an ostentatious gilded coach-and-four (until they discovered the practicalities of the tumbril), well - it died out for a good reason.
@granofon

@@jamesrogers5277 что с того? В английском нет падежей отсутствует разделение по родам. Масса неправильных глаголов полно исключений из правил. Если на английском языке невозможно договориться то его необходимо обрезать до технической терминологии.
