Well she didn't say she doesn't get ANY royalties. She said "it's not gonna pay my rent", meaning the amount she gets is small. It's a shame how grossly underpaid these girls were.
@@alextroy9202 she could get in trouble if she says the wrong thing. A lot of contracts come with agreements on what you can and can't talk about after leaving and even while being signed
In like 2014 they said they were all broke because they never got paid for their songs and they all had to ride public transportation. So yeah their label sucks:/
I love how transparent she was. That’s the music industry. They are not lying when they say “it’s not all Glitz & Glam.” It’s about MONEY! And not your money, OTHER people’s money. That’s why you see singers take a back seat and start writing because that’s where the money is.
@@malovina yes but who is touring 2 years straight with no break? The artist. People only see a small part and that’s the videos and awards shows. Most of these artist are performing across the world almost 365 days out of the year. Artist deserve more but labels are greedy and calculated. You have to be careful!
im happy she's shedding light about this and I hope more musicians do this more for educational purposes. songwriters and producers definitely deserve more for their work !
This is why it’s important to learn to be a songwriter, learn how to produce, compose and arrange. That way you are guaranteed more money and the less people it has to get divided between. If you are just a recording artist and don’t write a single thing of your own, don’t produce anything of your own the people who do all the work for you are gonna get the larger amounts. Look at Mariah Carey for example, she makes millions off of “all I want for Christmas is you” she wrote it from top to bottom. So she’s getting a large amount of the royalties.
@REALCrazyCriticAnd they gave their label enough money to invest all those millions on them, but they never did. Fifth Harmony was probably the only artist keeping Epic Records standing, they deserved a lot more than low budget music videos and tours, and being sabotaged by their own record label.
After seeing this I am happy that dinah has decided to start her own label. All the girls in the group are talented and its sad to see how much they were used in the industry as puppets.
oh wow she started one?! who knew! that's great, i'm glad she aint givin up on music she's always been a talented vocalist and performer. couldnt she join lauren's label? that'd b full circle lol
@@SupernaturalLove100 yes she recently announced she's started a label i think with a few others. She will be working behind the scenes in the industry but also will be releasing a few new projects including music very soon
And I remembered the girls expressing that they wanted to write or help produce songs but their label didn't allow it. Not until their very last album when it was 4 of them, but then the label said fine then we won't promote anything. Seriously the label was evil, used these young girls then threw them out when they couldn't control them anymore 😔❤️❤️
@REALCrazyCriticHere's the thing. You could release a shitty ass song and it will still be popular with enough marketing. The label just didn't want them to own their own songs because they want to trap them. It's literally that simple.
That 7/27 era summer… I’ll never forget it! This makes me sad however to know Lauren never wanted to be in 5H, not even before 5H had formed… I hope there was at least one moment while being in 5H that brought her as much happiness that the group had brought me as a fan.
They went through a lot and all the management shit and record label were fucking shit. They mistreated her a lot. But I'm sure she got a lot of good moments and happiness within the relationship with the girls. And they were like sisters privately. They do love each other but the shit they had to go through is the saddest
It happens to any artist who doesn’t write / produce their own songs. This type of singers make most of their money off of album sales, endorsement deals, performances, etc., but royalties on public performances (radio/tv/bars, etc) are paid mostly to those who write/produce the songs. That’s why most of the richest artists in the biz are those who are singer-songwriters or singer-producers. Adele, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and of course the most notable ones, Mariah Carey and Dolly Parton are well known to be writing most if not all of their materials. That’s why Dolly can sit nicely in her comfortable home collecting cheques while Whitney was doing her rounds singing I Will Always Love You. Whitney sold out tours, Dolly got the royalties. It’s a win win when the singer can still sell out her tours.. Mariah Carey owns copyright shares to the thousands of versions of All I Want For Christmas Is You, and if you hear anybody sing it, Mariah gets the coins from it. Hope this makes sense.❤
It’s just crazy how big Camila became. Normani too but still needs an album. Rooting for all Lauren, Dinah and Ally. But the business side of it ain’t easy. Camila had the advantage to release before COVID.
This is why Camila took the opportunity to go solo. Groups never make any money. Its happened time and time again. Even TLC spoke out back in the day to how they were flat broke while being the biggest girl group in music.
@@questionxtheculture oh my goodness, stop lol. Im talking about the GROUP. Lets be honest Camila held Fifth Harmony together. After she left, they fell apart.
@@Gabriela.H that's because she was pushed as the lead and given more parts on songs. regardless she is allowed to go solo but the way she went about it was not respectable or how you treat people you "care" about.
Little mix, one direction became millionaires from being in their group. It's not about being in a group, it's about the predatory behavior from record contracts and companies.
@@aubreydrake9335 omg 🤦🏻♀️ no one is talking about her as a person. I was simply talking about career opportunities from members of the group. She was the first to leave and then Normani ventured out and was successful as well. Why are ya’ll people so sensitive and need to find the negative in everything?
Atp none of the members are making anything substantial from 5H. Every time a song is streamed, 0.003 is made. Some how that's split between writers, producers, THEN the 5 group members. And as of now, no one is really streaming 5H so the girls are probably seeing about $500-1000 dollars A YEAR from those songs. Sad.
from what i understand FH songs were pitched by other songwriters who get the publishing royalties. And no disrepect but i think everyone has to be honest with their strengths, the songwriters made catchy songs which was necessary at that time for sales. Lauren is right, there are faceless people we don't see who spend their life trying to write a rare hit song bts. FH will financially always do well in concerts, events if they can reconcile, but its understandable this is their individual time to explore self identity.
Mariah Carey's All i want for Christmas is You, reaches #1 almost every year around Christmastime. However Mariah said Spotify is cheap. She only gets about $5-10k every year (i could be wrong). Imagive having to split the royalties among 4-5 people.
underpaid? or untalented? they don’t write or produce any of their songs they just come in the studio to record it, the producers and writers rightfully should be getting the majority amount of money cuz writing and producing takes alot more effort than recording ur voice on a song thats already been 100% made and even then the pay is divided between 5 members
@@hhhgghhhgg9221 they didn't write anything because their contract did not allow them, this is a well known fact in the fifth harmony-verse or whatever, they had to negotiate creative control for their final album and they had to fight tooth and nail to write one song. These girls got a terrible contract and they've been very vocal about being "worked like slaves" even while they were in the group. Educate yourself before you speak.
Unfortunately all business work like this both inside and outside of the music industry. The goal is to learn the inside tricks from these people to eventually set up on your own and be your own boss to have full control over your income. Good for Lauren for speaking out.
Im glad she understands and has a really sound mind! The girls of 5th harmony got paid to do the job at the time - which they did amazingly, but they didn’t create the songs or have the vision. The creators & songwriters & producers are getting the most royalties for those mega hits, and tbh that makes sense.
Lauren I'm sorry, ily, but I also love 5h albums and I don't want to stop listening to them. Good thing lot of my fav songs are unreleased so no money for the company
This is why y’all need to read them contracts there’s no reason that their parents didn’t advocate or even get lawyers/ professionals to look over documents. I loved fifth harmony but it’s sad that these ppl aren’t noticing they are being used until they have no money in their pockets. I think they should speak more about this and maybe this will help other up and coming stars cause it seems like being independent and making a name for urself is the way to go these days.
@@SupernaturalLove100lauren and ally (mainly lauren, ally was just calming her down) was talking about how their label was exploiting them. there’s a vid on here somewhere
How awful that Simon created this big girl group with song writers etc.. but didn’t get no royalties from the songs?? When they performed them live and in concert.. like it’s mind boggling to know that Simon didn’t care about them.. just for the money. Smh!
They didn’t write any songs, they probably had a 360 deal which is terrible, and based off of what Little Mix has said Simon cares about no one but Simon which is why they left. But after looking back, they were never cohesive. It felt like they never had a group mentality. And other times it seemed like they couldn’t stand each other.😂 I’ve seen other groups be put together and it seems like they had great chemistry but not 5H. They had bops and the 4 of them seem like sweet girls.
Kinda messed up but this is how it is in the music industry...usually songwriters, collaborators etc, and producers take some of the royalties 😔 but since they werent allowed to any input whatsoever, they only take home a small chunk of it.
Tbf, most people only really get royalties if they write the songs. I'm pretty sure the girls only got writing credits on their last album, so it makes sense that they don't make much.
^Like most girl groups there’s usually one star that producers/industry people want to help blow up their career. In 5H that obviously was Camille! What this girl should have done while in 5H was at its fame was start diversifying into acting maybe.
I think a lot of people coming on here to continue saying “she signed a contract” or “she didn’t write on the songs” are really missing the point (side note: many songwriters arent getting paid like that either. Several singers these days who write their own songs aren’t getting paid that much either). She and the other girls were teenagers when they signed their contracts. Guaranteed most artists who enter the business at a young age don’t know shit and their parents who aren’t savvy don’t know shit either. Usually those contracts are multi album deals. Anyone who knows the artist JoJo (known for “Get Out” and “Too Little Too Late”) knows about that 7 album deal she was roped into by her former label and how she couldn’t even get her masters after suing so she had to re-record all of the songs that were officially released. Some artists are NOT permitted to write on their own albums and often have their music rejected by their labels. They’re also open about it if you go looking. But some of you really need to think about what you’re saying when you say that people who sing and perform these songs that you might like shouldn’t be paid more.
Music industry is hard! You make money from shows not streams etc. All this social media “numbers” sht means nothing in the long run. Get a good talent lawyer and secure that deal with a strong bag.
Y’all really don’t know ish about music, there’s a reason why she wasn’t so upset about not getting royalties. Fifth harmony probably wrote like 10% of their music and produced none of the songs almost all the songs on the albums were demos from already famous artists which is another cost for the label. That’s why it’s so important that artists do write their own music and know how to play instruments and engineer their own sounds, they did none of that. Not the mention they don’t get paid for performing the songs 🥴 the songwriter and behind the scenes people did bc of the groups lack of involvement in the whole music making process, Rihanna is another artist who wrote almost none of her own original music or produced. that’s why she started a makeup and clothing empire because she made little money on her albums.
I know that artists get screwed and labels are greedy, but it's not like they were Spice Girls/Destiny's Child level famous. For their level of success, I don't think you can justify paying them more than like $500k each for their time in the group for their music specifically.
She didn't wrote any of them tbh, at least the hits they're talking about, the girls are only credited on their last album, and none of thosesong are hits. It's ok tho, that's what it's like for those types of groups, they're a product design to make someone else money, and they know that in advance because it's on the contract, and when you're name it's not on that songwriter credit list, you're not getting any money.
This is so complex and I don't know the full story because if they didn't write the songs, they shouldn't really be entitled to any of the publishing. Sometimes they will be given a percentage as their name is on it, despite them doing no publishingv work. The songwriters and producers get publishing for the art they made. Artists can make money from shows, merch, brand deals and performance rights from the tracks which is them singing the songs on the record. Buuut I guess I didn't think about the idea that once the group splits what happens when you can't perform, probably don't sell any merch anymore and no more deals!? So complex, but all we know is that songwriters especially and it seems like some artists (that only sing), don't get paid enough for their work. Why is the music industry still like this.
Now that Ally recently showed up and said they now have full rights over the brand following a dispute and that Simon helped them win, maybe now they'll get more royalties out of their songs now?
I thought I heard them say before on some songs sometimes they can’t sing on it like Lauren wasn’t able to sing on worth it. And Dinah couldn’t sing on sledgehammer I believe
When u dealing with five member vs one solo singer it’s like a whole different game park and at first they get this big lump sum and then get Pennies out of the end
Of course she's not gonna get royalty pay. She wasn't a song writer or composer of 5H hit songs. Her deal was 360 contract meaning she'll get paid when she perform but not when people buying 5H music. Unless she's involve in producing the song, she will not get paid for royalty. And even if she involved, if the song wasn't a big hit, she will not get paid much anyway and as far as I know the most hit one that she involved was Flex which is not their most hit one so.
It sucks to say it but it make sense why the artists don't make as much from streaming. They get money from appearances, concerts, merchandise, etc. The lyricists and composers only get money from the song itself. It's their only livelihood.
@@jolina298 not how copyright works. im glad songwriters get their share of what they deserve. trust me she has enough money XD. theres artist like justin bieber that take writing when they didnt produce or do anything on the track. horrible practice .
@@jolina298 Like she said she gets some royalties for being the singer. But it’s not a lot. The real work and income comes from being a song writer / composer. If you want most or ALL of the money for a song. You have to have a part in its entire production. The singing part is like the kid in a school project that did none of the work & just the presentation.
@@RemyEdits singing is work, it's a craft and a talent that not everyone has. you're undermining it when the voice is an instrument..and that's funny lol
Why is everyone SHOCKED? She probably barely had a hand in the creative process and most likely just recorded her part. Anyone who expects it to be divided just between the girls doesn't know the business, because their are at least a dozen others attatched.
They were divided from the start so no surprise they eventually fell apart. I think they all didn't want to work together or tried to be a group in all the videos I've seen.
That’s what usually happens when you start off from a reality competition show. The contracts you make in the beginning when you’re still new. It’s typical.
Yeah but that doesn't take away from the fact that they would of been being paid there fair share. Because you have to remember that those writers and producers don't make money if they don't have an artist to write and produce for. The artist is the face of the music. It wouldn't exist without them.
The company didn’t even credit the people they stole music from either 😂 so unfortunately I’m not surprised by this either. It’s horrible, but that the reality of the music industry.
the albums aren’t making much money they weren’t massive only the singles were hits lol and that was just worth it and work from home. they didn’t write the songs either and it’s split between the girls
