The one thing RODE has not done is create a very budget lavalier mic for its RODE Wireless GO II. While the RODE Lavalier GO is a very capable of microphone at it's price point, are there others that can fill the gap until you decide to upgrade? Let's find out!

Yet again an awesome video! The sound straight from some of the mics are good, and I am sure a little bit of EQ will also help. Perhaps next time you test lav mics you can test clothing rustle sound, and outdoor wind noise - which really varies from mic to mic. Your videos are great!
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Год назад
Hey hey Jeff! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The clothing tests I can definitely standardize. Outdoor wind noise will be much harder to ensure I am getting the same type of wind for each mic. I used to think about just aiming a fan at it, but I don't know how useful that type of test would actually be. I'll definitely think more about it. Thanks again for stopping by! Great review. Surprised the budget Sony did so well. And THANK YOU for bringing up Rode’s lack of case, I absolutely despise the cheap bags they include with all of their gear. Tell your Rode contact we would gladly pay for a storage solution like the Deity’s. Heck make semi modular inserts for a RU-vidr pack out (Wireless Go, Videomic NTG, a couple of lav mics, built in battery bank for recharging)
@TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey again Charlie! That would be pretty dope if RODE came out with a case that packed all those popular mics into one thing and charge. Those two mics seriously are like the Budget+ solution for every essential audio need.

Checked out your channel and will definitely be back when I get back into it and need some refreshers, that Neil Peart style tutorial really brought back some memories learning from my teacher haha! I love that Pearl Masterworks kits, I was looking into those or Yamaha's. But for now, for the sake of neighbors, my next kit is most likely one of the Roland V series kits that I'll plug into my mac and start learning Logic! Looking forward to seeing your new tutorials with a wireless lav setup, have fun!
@JeffWald
@JeffWald 2 года назад
@@TLDR_filmmaker right on brother! V series is a great option when you've got neighbors. Afa Yamaha vs Pearl, I've checked out the Phoenix line b4 but when you compare looks and sound and options, the Pearl is the clear winner IMO. I've had this kit just over 7 years now and it still looks/sounds as great 7 years later. Btw, the mic came in Friday, I've got it plugged into my ATEM and am getting signal but we also got hit with a stupid stomach bug so I'm on hold until me & the Mrs feel better. Slowly just doing more prep stuff but check back next week/next year :), I should have Witch Hunt up next!

This was informative. I do have one suggestion. In the future when you say you’re going to be silent for a moment on the outdoor test can you actually be silent. You said it then literally a millisecond later you were on to the next lav test. Thanks
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Patrick! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I know, I should have put a text in there why I decided to leave out the outdoor ambient. The reason I did it is because the outdoor ambient is not a consistent sound across each mic test. For example, the Olympus test there were birds that flew in and chirped loudly while there rest didn't content with it. So I decided to leave it out and let the "Fan ON" ambient be the consistent test so that you can hear how each mic picks up that noise that's consistent. Sorry about that, next time I'll leave a title card if I negate a test that I performed. I just wanted to make sure you heard enough of me speaking before I switched to the next mic. Hope this makes sense. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I own that Sony and there's two odd things about it. First - it's a stereo mic, so there's always a LEFT and a RIGHT channel to consider, which can be an issue if your subject turns his head while he talks (which almost everyone does). The second thing is that it has a silver metal body which picks up a ton of noise from clothing, etc. Even so it's a great value and has the absolute best audio gain of any lavalier I've ever used.

Hey! I wanted to know: The light in this video is awesome - I currently have the Sony 6400. I would love to get my lighting to consistently look like this. I've looked on your channel and see that you have a lighting tutorial from awhile back. I would like to know how to get my lighting like you have in this video and I'm willing to purchase whatever lights (I have a really good and big ring light) or lenses to make that happen. I have a sound panel background. Tips? Or is that video still relevant to THIS type of lighting? Great video also by the way. I watch it in full and left a like! 💯
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Randy! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! This type of lighting could potentially be achieved with your ring light depending on how large it is and how close you can get it to your face at the upward angle that I talk about in the beginners youtube setup tutorial video. You're going to want to set that ring light as if it's a off angle halo. Because of the way the ring light works with its flood like quality and that its close to your head and just out of frame, you'll get a similar lighting look, not quite the same, but similar enough. I'm talking probably a 20" ring light approx. If it doesn't work to your liking, then this is what I'm using: Godox SL60: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3drVUZ5LWPI.html Laofas 47": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kK8lSclsp8A.html Godox CL10: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r2Vrc6k1Ye8.html Then use your ring light as a rim/hair light, and us a C-Stand to hold up that large softbox (only one layer of diffusion, no inner diffusion, you can if you want) I'm filming wide open on my lens at f/2.8, full frame at about ISO 160. You can make your adjustments as needed on the A6400. This is the kit for my specific shot of just a medium. If you are trying to go wider the look may vary as you'll need to move the light further away to get it out of the shot. Thats the key point for softer lighting, keep a super large source as close as you can to the subject. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@Shot2media Yes, but there was a strong noise with it. I almost bought the B3, but heard that. Great video as always mate! Just wondering, what do you think about using some of the cheapest Amazon options for lavs with the Rode Go II? Like the PowerDeWise, Purple Panda or Boya?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey again Sydney Dance Vids! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! My general thoughts on those cheaper options is that they are primarily made for cellphones with a TRRS plug and come with a TRS adaptor (wireless audio packs, camera). Because of that you now have this very long adaptor sticking out of your audio pack and can be snapped off more easily. So I personally do not recommend those options for most filmmakers that are only going to use DSLR and traditional wireless audio packs. Thanks again for stopping by! Thank you for a great revue, this was really helpful, I use the Rode LG for fitness and dance videos. They tend to break often in the cable because of the heavy use, but that's to be expected as they're not really built for what I'm doing. But I have to say you're right and have confirmed what I already know. Even with the heavy use, they're actually the best mics for what I'm doing. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

The Olympus camera and RX levels were the same as the others, Not because I was keeping it consistent across the board, but because this video was not meant to be a lav test. So even though I was hitting the same Signal range as the others, it does have a higher noise floor. But, I honestly don't think it's a big deal cause it's a regular hiss sound that mixes with general ambience noises. I actually use that lav for awhile with my original RODE GO and never felt the noise floor was a bother. I actually didn't realize it was there until this test against other higher end mics.

Hey hey Vegas Must Try! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Glad you're enjoy the channels theme! The main reason I don't perform these tests in an area with people is because it's hard to replicate the ambient noise exactly the same way which could give inconsistent results. Since this video I have tried other options to test ambient noise rejection, but at the end of the day lav mics are omni directional so it will pick up noise everywhere. Its ultimately up to the transmitters auto gain algorithm characteristics that will dictate how much it understands is ambient noise during the quite parts. Hope this makes sense! another great video! I'd be interested in seeing some comparisons of some different cardioid lav mics and how well they do with background noise rejection, like if there's dialog going on, off to the side. That's one of my biggest challenges as I do not have a "studio space" as a fulltime RVer. Finding a lav that picks up my voice very well, yet diminishes household noise/conversation would be ideal; Even the Rode Wireless Go II picks up my wife clear as day at 10 feet, which makes post super time consuming trying to filter out unwanted sounds. a greater rejection would make this process MUCH easier for me (and likely many others)

Hey hey OCFLAboi407! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I hear ya, the reason I did this was because I had the section afterwards where you can hear the fan noise only between the five 5 mics. I figured this was the best way to let you hear how the fan noise changes between each mic quickly. If I talk inbetween each fan noise part, your ear won't be able to discern which fan noise was actually lower, so thus why I broke it apart into sections. Now the outdoor silence I took out completely and definitely forgot to clarify why. It's because the outdoor test wasn't fair with cars and birds coming when they pleased. I couldn't make it objective with those variables like the fan. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Josh! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I too was surprised with the Deity, it's not bad and does feel a bit more equal in terms of its frequency response, but I was surprised the noise floor had more of that hiss sound compared to the RODE Lav GO. The Rode Lav could be optimized, I will know more as I go back to some of the current popular 2.4ghz lineup and see how it sounds. I have not done a straight lav shootout yet into a field recorder, but will once I get more to add to the line up. The only problem is my field recorder is quite old and depending on what I need to set the pre-amp at I could be adding the field recorders noise floor into the mix minus the mics own self noise. @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Budiono! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! This is completely dependent on your mic setup and your voice volume. Also every camera does not handle settings the same I I recently found out with Sony cameras vs Panasonic Cameras SONY AUDIO FIX: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bh_gfEsFGtA.html So while I can give you a blanket solution except for that you need to try out all combinations to figure out what your camera actually is. If you're Panasonic, go ahead and put the camera mic at the lowest setting and then use RODE Output to compensate. If you're on Sony, depending on which camera you got +1 through +5 is the good spot. I don't know about other camera brands if you're not using either of these two. As for your camera audio level -12db is the standard to try and stay in for editing later, you can push it to -6 in Panasonics case, not so much Sony. This is all I can say of how I approach my audio settings now. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Zach! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! So glad this video was helpful! Definitely depends on your needs for the lav, the RODE Lav is definitely a great pro mic for just about every situation. But if you just need a lav for youtube videos or vlogging. The Sony can fit that bill until you decide to invest in the more expensive lav options. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Nice and good review, i agree with you that the rode lavalier is better, i also had compare it with boya by-lm20, at first i thought it will no different, cause i use the same rode wireless transmitter and receiver. But the output is no match with the rode lavalier. Tq for this review, it really helped me. Love from Malaysia.

Hey your video convinced me to get my Rode Wiresless go 2 and my Rode Lavalier Go. I started using them and when using the Lavalier Go I'm experiencing a shifting effect In the audio where the lav mic is on my shirt and the audio will play on the right side for a few minutes and then It will switch to playing on the left side and keep going back and forth for the entirety of the video. Is there a fix for this. I don't want to record with binural sound or anything just mono.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey Street Inspired! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Hmm, if the RODE GO Receiver is set to "mono" instead of "stereo" then it should be recording out of both sides all the time. The only thing I can think of is to ensure that both the Lav and the cable going into your camera is firmly pressed in so that it doesn't shift inside the port. Sometimes it may seem its in, but you will really want to press it in. If you are still having the same problem, here is my thoughts on what it could be. 1) defective unit 2) The cable that goes from the RX to the camera has a internal fray inside. The easiest way to test this is if you have another regular AUX cable lying around somewhere. Use that cable instead and see if you still have the same problem. If you don't, then its the cable. If you still have the same problem, it's a defect of the receiver. Hope this helps. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Give Back Documentary! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I'm always of the mind set that if your current gear solves your needs and you are not present with problems, theres no reason to upgrade. Only upgrade if there are problems that your gear can't handle. Hey thanks for the awesome video! All that work is very much appreciated. Question: I’m doing a film shoot where all three actors will be kitted out with a Rode Wireless GO II with a Rode Lavalier GO attached. It was interesting to see your clipping test and I’m wondering if that will be a problem. I’m sure I saw somewhere that the Wireless GO II has some sort of protection against clipping? It records a lower db version alongside the normal one or something? Can you shed any light on that? Otherwise what’s the safest way to avoid clipping with that set up if my actors really go for it!
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey Matthew! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The clipping happened on the mic capsule level, not the RODE GO level. So clipping should not be a concern with the RODE Lav GO unless your actors are specifically screaming at the top of their lungs causing the capsule to clip. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Anthony! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! If you're in the USA there do still have some of the older Sony ECMCS3 for sale on Amazon for $20ish bucks. But as far as the new ECMLV1, I have a feeling its literally the exact same thing, just in the black color and rebranded for todays marketing terms. The original ECMCS3 I remember seeing for many many years and they never updated it. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Thank you for your quick answer :). So the ECM-LV1 is/might be the update version of the ECM-CS3? Yeah I can't find the ECM-CS3 product page on Sony's swiss webpage, only the ECM-LV1, so maybe it has already been discontinued here. Might wait for your test before buying one then!!!

How do you find the Rode Go II when it comes to rooms with bad acoustics? I’m considering getting this setup for testimonials in dance studios but they have quite harsh echos
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey Pawpkorn Visuals! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Hmm... I have used the RODE in a dance studio setting, but I don't believe the studio was as echoee as some I have been in. For me, in this scenario, if the RODE GO is all I have, I would probably do my "RODE GO Reporter mic setup". I show it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KBLorAFsQow.html This way the person speaking is going right at the mic capsule instead of around it like a normal lav. This in theory would reduce the speakers echo while speaking. The other way is not have the speaker in the studio at all and get their testimonial somewhere else in the building that is not as echoee and use B-roll of whatever or whoever they are talking about. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, but hope this helps somewhat. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Juliette! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If you lavalier has Three color bands on it, this is the wrong lavalier. A lot of cheap lavaliers you buy on Amazon these days is for cellphones and not for traditional wireless systems. Some of them come with an adapter to change it from TRRS to TRS, its a bit cumbersome but thats what you would need to do. Thanks again for stopping by! Thank you, nice review. Most users want to know whether it is worth it to go just one step higher .....for example the Sennheiser ME2....is it worth it to spend a little more? Will spending 50 dollars more (compared to Rode) get one in the premiere league ? Or is it the same quality level? That should be your next review.

What is your recommendation for comica boomx d2? the mic that comes with the boomx is not so good imo?!...
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey renesfoodpassion! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The BoomXD specifically has a internal low cut filter that takes away the bass rumbles that can't be turned off. I found that out later when talking with the engineers. A design overlook that they fixed in the XU version. So unfortunately no different lav will make it better, however all you need to do is in post, go to your EQ and either just do a default raise bass frequencies. Or you can manually bump up the bass frequencies from 60hz-200hz and that should bring everything back and give a deepness to your voice. I know this is not the most streamlined of solutions, but it's the only thing that'll help bring back the bass of your voice with the Boom XD. Once you find a EQ setting you like you usually can just save it as preset so that all you gotta do it click it on any of your future clips and you'll be good. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

You should try turning off your wifi and testing the Mic J again. So weird because it works great with my Comica Boom XU setup.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 года назад
Hey hey again Copy Imitation! Unfortunately the RF interference is more just the JK picking up the frequency from the RODE's own Wifi signal instead of the wifi signal around the area. To piggy back on my response earlier, the 500mhz generally don't cause much interference through lavalier mics.

Hey hey PixluxxMusic! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Oddly I'm not familiar with the trending mini mics? Is it for cellphones use or is it a actual traditional wireless audio pack lavalier?
