Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Law Abiding Citizen (2009).
Directed by F. Gary Gray, "Law Abiding Citizen" follows the story of Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler), a man who takes extreme measures to seek justice for the murder of his family. Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) an official who only cares about keeping his track record as perfect as he can decides to make a deal with a criminal, little does he know this will come at a great cost.
This is a tale of justice, revenge, and moral ambiguity.The film takes us through the exploration of vigilante justice, its portrayal of the legal system, and it's moral gray areas. There's some amazing tense sequences here especially in the courtroom scenes that had us at the edge of our seats!
This movie has it's pros and cons but overall it was an enjoyable film in the thriller genre.
We hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we delve into the intricate themes "Law Abiding Citizen" ponders. From how the justice system works to the grey areas that can be exploited the film does an excellent job at keeping it's audience engaged.

I personally feel Clyde is right in his ideals, and I don't know if it's right or wrong to say he took it too far. It depends on the context you're coming from personally I think And let's be real: Nick cheated the system to win. He broke into Clyde's property without a warrant and placed the bomb in Clyde's cell with the knowledge that this would kill him.

"This is a victory for us." This line pisses me off so much every time I watch this. For Nick, it's his career and success, publicity and new clients. For Clyde, it's about carving out some slight bit of peace after everything he cared about was ripped from him, leaving him a hollow shell of a person. Nick took away Clyde's chance to heal because Darby destroyed his life and Nick used him as a bargaining chip to further his career.

The ending has always annoyed me. The man is a genius with multiple backup plans for everything and he didn't devise a way to be alerted to someone coming through his tunnel? He didn't have an alternate escape route from the cell? The only explanation is he planned to die no matter what and he saw that he finally got his point across, so he figured that was the time. I'm not sure I would want to live after my wife and daughter were murdered either. That said, I have read that the ending was supposed to be Clyde living, but it was changed during production...allegedly because Foxx didn't want his character to lose. Don't know how true that is.
@AlastorsShadowDemon

Not true at all. It’s said that the writers and producers had trouble with finding an ending to Nick’s character. There’s many alternative endings where Clyde still dies, but there’s trouble for Nick as well. Changes were constantly being made up to the end of filming because they weren’t happy.

Like many people, I really hated Nick. He really didn't care how many lives was destroyed as long as he had a high conviction rate and only started to care about "justice" when he was the one being affected by what was going on. Just as he proved with Darby. He didn't care if someone got away with murder. As long as he got to convict someone, it didn't matter if the one convicted was guilty or innocent.

De escalates the situation while also being kind of an F you to them lol

actually it wasn't the reason. The reason he was undressing to be fully na ked when police came for him, is to make sure they don't plant anything on his body, like planting dr ugs into pocket, etc, so they won't have anything to imprison him (ike drug possession or having a knife or gun related to some crime) outside of that case m which he was fully in control. For example police could've easily change the initial report by adding that he had a gun or drugs on him, so this would've given them reason to put him in custody.

@@tylerdurden5406 he went into custody under certain case, which he planned for years. He was playing with them to give confession cause they had 0 evidence at start and couldn't prove his guilt and if he didn't explode on judge- he would've go free. He wanted them to follow the game he planned. He had years to study and he knew what police does and can do whenever it benefits officials. They could've changed the initial report and stating that he had a knife with Darby's blood or he had a drugs on him in his pocket so they had an excuse to keep him in custody and whole plan he had to mock the judge would've failed, but since all they had is 1 case for which they had 0 evidence, he was able to continue his game and mocked the judge as he planned initially.
@tylerdurden5406
@tylerdurden5406 2 месяца назад
@@anonymousfx5254 the mistake here is assuming mocking the judge was a means to anything other than to annoy her. He mocked he proved a point that he could’ve gone free but he ultimately wanted to be in solitary confinement. Planting evidence- which is in itself pretty rare realistically and unnecessary in this case as a knife on his person wouldn’t have mattered nor would having a gun as he was in his own home. Drugs might do something but again he’s accused of murder. The facts are in a tense high pressure and stress situation like that with the SWAT team coming in full tactical gear - they’re more likely to shoot first and ask questions later. But if he’s naked on his knees hands behind his head it gives them the illusion of safety and full control. Meanwhile he’s actually in full control.
@blinkachu5275
@blinkachu5275 2 месяца назад
15:45 "why" Simple He's fully naked so they can't shoot him on a technicality. It's Swat that's picking him up, not regular police, and they absolutely can use deadly force if they deem it necessary Approaching them buck naked means they have 0 reason to suspect he's carrying a weapon, ergo, if they shoot him, he still wins

The irony of this movie is that the means they tried to go to punish Clyde for outsmarting them is happening in real life to people who never committed any crimes except for the crime of the system just not liking them. As some say Nick does not care About Justice Just so Long as he Keep's his High Rates up, well Look At Clyde, he also does not care about the Lives of Innocent People JUST so Long as he Can Unleash ALL his Rage on the City. As Clyde, he's not Getting Justice for his family, all he is doing is Attacking And terror-Bombing a great City ALL because He cant See the Truth, which is What he's doing is Not gonna solve or fix anything. Its not gonna bring his family Back and its not just instantly gonna "FIX" the Law. Is the Law Flawed, Yes it is. But also, Clyde delusionally believing he can make the world a better place by Using terrorism is also Flawed and CRAZY. CLyde lost his family, Its Terrible. Well all the Innocent people he killed who HAD NOTHING AT ALL to do with the deal and Also, Had their OWN Family's. and What Clyde did, he ruined these family's. CLyde's a hypocrite. In their final scene together, Nick informs Clyde that he no longer makes deals with murderers. He only lived the last 10 years to show them how messed up the system is and teach Nick the lessons.

Such a great movie, that just really botched up the ending. No way should Nick have outsmarted Clyde. And he ends up learning absolutely nothing. Personally I would have wanted Clyde's entire plan to run out as planned. And then the very final step would be to put Nick's family in danger, the only chance he had for saving them was to kill Clyde himself, thereby doing what needs to be done. Once Clyde's project was over there was no need for him to keep on living, he'd want to be with his family. And Nick would have to break every principle he believed in to save the ones he loved thereby proving the faults of the system.

The movie chocked and did a turn around and gave the win to the lawyer undeservedly. its such a anticlimactic ending without a resolution as he up to the end did not change his mind on his corrupted belief of justice, that he uses it as a way for him to win. The change where nick wins makes no since as nick was always 10 steps behind, always refusing to admit his mistake to the ending.

I am REALLY conflicted about this movie. On the one hand, Clyde is an INCREDIBLE antagonist. The performance, the Saw-like planning, the backstory... You're right. You're rooting for this guy for the most part. But then he crosses the line and starts killing everyone who was even peripherally involved with his case and he loses the moral high ground. And then the car bombs just solidify him as a zealot who doesn't care who he hurts to make his point. That's incredible, but the movie kind of lost me right at the end when Nick dismissed the idea of civil rights to break into the warehouse. And then planted the bomb in the cell. He turned into the same kind of zealot Clyde had become, took matters into his own hands and dealt "justice" on the fly. No trial. No judge. Nothing. He had Clyde dead to rights and decided to just off him. I still love this movie, but it really lost me at the end. Oh, and that bit with the exploding cell phone is SUCH a good jump scare even though this isn't a horror movie.

The issue with making the villain win in this film is that it send the wrong message about what real justice is at the end when it spent all the film explaining how that form of justice was justified. They only ended it this way so they wouldn’t be accused of inciting violence otherwise it makes no sense, yes it’s real life and in reality that would probably be the ending but it’s still frustrating and confusing because they also made the ending message is that violence solved violence so that’s an immediate contradiction to what they were trying to say by this subpar ending. Clyide became an extremist because of a corrupt system so you make the corrupt system win ? Come on now 😅😂 On a more positive and less infuriating note, the action was super impactful and made you feel anxious every min during which is what it should do. The 3rd of act of the movie is where a major rewrite was needed. Nick doesn't ever have a redemption arc or anything in this movie that makes it feel like he's changed by the end. He shows some remorse for his part in not doing enough to serve justice, even recognizing that he was greedy and egocentric to pursue a career over doing good. It would have been more interesting to see him taking steps to correct his past mistakes and actually change. As for Clyde, he definitely took things too far once his plans started to endanger people who were more innocent than others. But the biggest problem with Clyde is that it got to a point where his story-arc just stalls and his reasonings for continuing are not logical. Sure, killing criminals, corrupt officials, and exposing the system is going to cause demand for change but he's hitting a point where he's becoming more scarier. He's even hit OP mode with how he's able to do all of this stuff like he's Jason Bourne or something. The ending I would have gone with is that Clyde reaches a realization that he's become a monster in his pursuit to get revenge, instead giving up his plans once Nick finally shows true remorse for his decisions and even acknowledges that he's partially responsible for pushing Clyde down a dark path. Although acknowledging that the system will most likely remain the same, Nick promises to do better and asks for his forgiveness, which Clyde gives. Clyde confesses to his actions and is put on death row, while Nick is the only one there for his execution. Afterward, Nick represents a family who lost a child and decides to pursue the case forward, despite knowing that the chances of winning are low.

There’s a lingering question as to whether Clyde - despite what he claims - is after change or vengeance and the plot of the movie heavily leans towards the latter. This unfortunately hurts Clyde as a character because he’s spoken about as this hyper efficient being at getting things done and his claims in the movie would have you believe that he wants to change the system and hold people accountable. While killing the original perpetrators was a given, it doesn’t make sense to kill anyone else because if they’re dead, they can’t take any accountability.

Interesting fact about the movie...they swapped roles butler was supposed to play the lawyer and jamie the dad but when they read the script both preferred the opposite role so they swapped

Imagine John Kramer aka. Jigsaw from Saw, the OG, who is the only one that will punish Ben Rice, break him, make him suffer and admit his guilt or sin for what he did 10 years ago out of selfishness, ignorance, hypocrisy, and inconsideration for getting a high conviction rate and not helping an innocent man like Clyde Shelton get justice for him and his family. But he will not kill him.

Yup! He would’ve been the type of person Jigsaw would’ve set his eyes on for his masterplan 😂

Fun Fact: The ending was originally different but Jamie Foxx didn't like that Clyde(the bad guy in Jamie Foxx's mind)won. So he refused to shoot the ending unless they changed it. Which is why a man who was so smart he was designing assassinations for the government got outsmarted and taken down by a New York prosecutor.

This movie is so underrated. I dont think Clyde took it to far, he had every right to do what he did in my opinion. If people and lawyers only think about themselves and wich gender to hate more then another I think they deserv everything that is coming to them honestly.... This is probebly the best movie Ive seen BUT!!!!!!!: This movie had a written other ending but Jamie fox did'nt wanna do the role if the good guys was'nt winning... Abit ironic is'nt it?

One of my all time favorite movies. The premise, the acting, the action, all executed perfectly.

Another fun crime/thriller for you would be “Inside Man”. Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Willem Dafoe, directed by Spike Lee. It’s loaded with great acting and plot.

Only the end is disappointing. It would have been the perfect movie had he gotten away with it 100% and Jamie Foxx had actually lost everything instead like Gerard Butler had. Sadly Hollywood likes happy endings when most of life is not actually like that!

Agreed! They kinda needed to write that ending in so that they wouldn’t “send the wrong message” but seeing how capable Clyde was it’s really hard to believe he would’ve gone out that way 😅

My favorite cousin was murdered at 17 years old.... shot point blank in the face by his girlfriends father. The murderer was already on parole out of another state for manslaughter.... he served FIVE YEARS for my cousins murder. Justice in Florida for you. Its why I still, 20 years later, don't go to Florida. Too much temptation to serve my own justice. I understand Clyde & love this movie. ❤

Denise said something about wishing that Clyde would have also planned to hold himself accountable in the end. Well obviously we will never know if he did or didn’t rig something for himself……cause who knows🤷‍♀️imo it’s highly probable that he did have a plan for that once he was finished holding everyone else accountable, he’d do the same thing to himself in the end. Hell, for all we know…he could have planned to right after the bombing ffs? But…he just didn’t get to before Nick killed him…that’s all🤔🤨🤷‍♀️

15:43 - so they don't shoot him. If you are naked and your hands are up, there is 0% chance of them thinking you have a gun on you and/or reaching for anything.

He got naked to minimize the chances of being shot. Standing in the middle of the room, naked, hands in the air and anyone with ounce of training is not going to shoot you (though cops have a history of being shockingly inept).

Enemy of the State (1998) is another movie that gets over looked it's aged surprisingly well in today's surveillance society.
