I was 19 and either recently graduated or about to graduate from HS in 1976. Didn’t even know this show existed until I moved to NYC in 1980. Got a job at this store in midtown Manhattan in which officers from the 23rd Precint worked as security on their days off. Great guys all of them. Thanks for the upload.
What a great movie , excellent performance by Darren, I haven't seen this movie in over 20 years and as far as I'm concerned it tells it like it is with what goes on in the nyc police department back then, and most certainly today.
I remember watching "Law And Order" with Darren McGavin back when it first premiered in 1975. It is still one of Mr. McGavin's best performances. Thanks for finding and downloading this classic.
Roger Turner. Thankyou so much for that information I didn't know that I'm going to look online and see what that movie was about in 1976 law and order. Appreciate your information Roger Thankyou kindly
This is a terrific movie! Thanks for sharing it! I saw it when it was on television in the seventies! It's a true classic! The book doesn't disappoint, as well!
The book is even better (IMHO). So glad I finally got to see this. I read the book not long after it was published--terrific. I was saddened to learn that Dorothy Uhnak had committed suicide.
@@HotVoodooWitch Interesting, it seems that the author, Dorothy Uhnak committed suicide, at 76 years old, only a few months after Darren McGavin died at the age of 83. As he was the leading character in this movie, wonder if there was any connection. So very sad indeed.
Good grief! Gardening in a skirt and and all purdy. It's the 70s alright. We had a party for my grandmother, in 1972, because she "got" to start wearing pants instead of dressess! What?!
i am glad this person uploaded asi like a good story with good actors like robert reed mr brady rip and uncle jessie dukes of hazzard i would recommend this to anyone
Art Hindle - the only person in the world who gets handsomer and handsomer as he gets older. It just ain't fair. Plus, he's an interesting and excellent actor.

I never saw this particular movie before but I grew up watching police shows in the 1970's. I prefer them to what we have now. Only two modern cop shows I respect now: Law & Order and Blue Bloods.
Very good movie. The flashbacks of Deputy Commissioner O'Malley added to the drama of the present situation. It would have been nice if Lt. Levein would have told O'Malley how his father really died.
Suzanne Pleshette was such a gorgeous woman and she must have been as nice as she seemed. I've never heard a bad word said about her. So sorry she's gone.
***** I know what you mean about the smoking thing. I had an aunt and an uncle who ended up dying for the same reason. Nicotine is apparently a real bear to kick. I did know that she married Tom Poston but I wasn't aware of the other details you've shared. All three - Pleshette, Poston and Newhart - enjoyed long careers. Isn't Bob Newhart still with us?
***** Wow. I didn't realize that. Glad he came to his senses. Goodness knows, 43 years of heavy smoking killed my father via massive cardiovascular disease. So glad I've never even been tempted to smoke. You seem to be a loyal and well informed fan of good sitcoms and their stars. I'm not as well informed but I'm certainly a fan. I enjoy the tidbits of info you've shared.
***** Good for you! I really appreciate your tip about green tea, etc. I'd be grateful if you could give me the recipe. It's difficult to realize how many people would still be around if they simply hadn't smoked. My stepmom was a pathologist and tried for years to convince my father how dangerous his addiction was, even resorting to making him look at actual cancerous lungs. He seemed to think he'd dodge that bullet somehow, even after he was diagnosed with a fairly mild case of emphysema. I don't think he ever accepted the connection between smoking and heart disease. The will NOT to believe can be very, very strong.
I saw this movie when it out. I loved it then but I never understood the movie. Now that I'm.a few decades old and have some experience. I understand it and love the movie even more.
...yeahhh...McGavin'''...surprised ...Me...HE WAS ROUGH & TOUGH ...and ...always to the ...POINT...Like in ...'''NIGHT-STALKER-...(KoLchak-)...must ...Gather ...up...all...the...facts...
Missed this wonderful show back in 76 was either working hard or disco dancing I guess. I miss realism intertwine with hope, reflection determination and conscience. The later 4 are sadly left out in the dystopian society of today without God. Without HIS prescription I too would embrace today's hopelessness.

*THX* Viet Gurl = I haven't watched this engaging 2-1/2 hour "real life probe" in decades!!!! Always a *_GOOOOD_* look at vice, graft and corruption in NYC that began at Tammany Hall in the 1700s, and in very large part continues to this very day...!!! So well scripted with believable performances throughout. And with welcomed cameos by illustrious Tom Clancy. As always too, "The Big Fish" *_never_* get exposed.
so enjoying every bit of this. haven't spoken back at the tv📺 while watching in a looong time. glad i played hookey today. 😁 thanks for the upload, @Viet Gurl.
I just finished rewatching this after having seen it on its original run in 1976, then on late night reruns at least 20 years ago. Don't let the title fool you, it's got nothing to do with the Dick Wolf franchise except also being about the NYPD. It actually more resembles another later, long-running series, BLUE BLOODS, about a multigenerational family of NYPD cops of Irish descent. Darren McGavin (best remembered as Kolchak the Night Stalker and the dad in A CHRISTMAS STORY) plays Deputy Chief Brian O’Malley Jr., a second-generation cop, and Whitney Blake (best remembered as Dorothy on the sitcom HAZEL and for being Meredith Baxter's mom) plays his wife. Art Hindle plays their son Patrick, a recently discharged Army veteran and now a rookie patrolman. Robert Reed of THE BRADY BUNCH is one of a number of 1970s all-stars who make up the rest of the cast. It doesn't just remind me of BLUE BLOODS. It actually wouldn't take much rewriting other than changing the surname of O'Malley to Reagan, with Deputy Chief Brian O'Malley Jr. becoming Henry Reagan and Officer Patrick O'Malley becoming Francis Reagan, for this to be a PREQUEL to BLUE BLOODS, a generation earlier. The only major change to the backstory would be that Mary Ellen O'Malley, Brian Jr.'s wife and Patrick's mother, is the daughter of a rich NYC political boss, while recently revealed BLUE BLOODS series canon has Betty Reagan, Henry's wife and Frank's mother, as an Irish-born immigrant from a huge, poor family. Otherwise it's an almost perfect fit. Brian Jr. isn’t squeaky clean, especially early in his career, like Henry Reagan often alludes to in BLUE BLOODS. The one serious problem I have is that of 50something and 40something actors playing the same characters in flashbacks as teenagers and 20somethings. There are flashbacks to when McGavin's and Blake's characters first meet when he's supposed to be a rookie cop in his mid 20s and she's supposed to be 17; McGavin was 53 or 54 and Blake was 49 or 50 when they filmed it. Who were they trying to kid??? Blake's daughter Meredith Baxter was 28 or 29 at the time and SHE would've been to old to play the character at that age! Robert Reed, Alan Arbus, James Olson and several other characters playing Brian Jr.’s contemporaries also play the same characters in the flashbacks. Scott Brady, who appears in those flashbacks as Brian O’Malley SENIOR was 2 years younger than McGavin. Other than haircuts and Arbus having a mustache as an older man, only the uniforms and rank insignia, the vehicles driven, and the clothing of the civilian characters offered any indication of what was a flashback and when it occurred, and it was troublesome; the attempt to make the characters appear younger in the flashbacks was an epic fail. But as a story, it was gritty, compelling and rang true. Other reviewers may wonder if this was a pilot for a series and speculate that it would have been successful. Perhaps in a sense it was, 34 years later as BLUE BLOODS even though there was no evident intent.
At about 38 mins when Ms Pleshette enters the bar, there's an old drunk at the bar who tries to accost her. That's the most realistic part about this film as, dear readers, that is exactly how I used to be and will be again the next time I tie one on. I can hardly wait.
Sorry to be responding to a 3-year old comment, but ... Yeah! I wouldn't have guessed it, but you're right! I don't know why, but this movie is not listed in his filmography on Wikipedia. I did learn there, however, that he was the cousin of rock singer Jon Bon Jovi and opera singer Mario Lanza. And that he died in 2012, at 60 years of age.
Thanks for sharing ❣️to me as a German what an awesome great experience 😎💕🥰 such an incredible movie 👍👍👍 before I started watching, I thought it is a kinda early pilot to the great Law and Order series, which I like very much, can so send me a link for watching since the beginning ❓❣️would be great, thanks 😊
This is a very confusing movie. A lot of people rave about it, to me it's just ok. Darren McGavin sure cried a lot in it. It is very realistic, though.
I remember reading the book way back when and I saw this movie once before. Very moving and taken at at a time when The city of New york was in the doldrums. This whole story was very moving.
Enjoyed your TV movies and guest appearances over the years. One movie stands out, the one where you play an incestuous father. A very believable performance. Good luck with all your endeavors.
Really a good movie. It is unfortunate that a good many cops are honest, hardworking and risking their lives daily to protect us. However, as in the movie there is racism, antisemitism and corruption as well. I doubt that will ever change. After all, they are human beings also. Stay safe everyone.
