@@thepatriotbangingxi4718 Nope. A threat to a governor to keep the city boy away from his home or an axe will be displayed in his head. Not just a threat, but a warning. The city boy is a gross man while the country folk tells them to go away or else.
I love how Hardy can communicate with no words how deep in his anger he was. You can see he wanted to draw, but he rethought the situation and realized how stupid it would be.
Matthew McGonigal that would make sense but the amount of time he was being neglected while bleeding out in the movie should’ve killed him. Maggie had to drive back, get raped, and then drove 20 miles to get him to a hospital. And it was 1930. Idk maybe it didn’t play out like that in real life.
Radar211, what makes you say that Tom Hardy is versatile? I struggle to think of a role of his that isn't some sort of hard man, even his gay character in RocknRolla wasn't gay at all. When I think versatile I think Daniel Day-Lewis from my left foot to Lincoln where speech is changed and demeanor is completely different to do with his method process. For me Tom Hardy speaks the same in every movie, he mumbles and his facial expressions are singular and his characters have hardly any depth but a sort of silent strength that adds to his physical which he has obviously been cast for. That's my take on him, my humble opinion.
You look at ANY Tom Hardy role...and you will see immediately that he very well may be the best in the business. How he has never won an Oscar... is just plain stupid.
Agreed. I have seen few actors that can melt into a role like he does. When I watch him in a movie, I'm always convinced that he is the character he is portraying.
Pacfanweb I've lived on the Virginia North Carolina border my entire life. Born and raised here. Part of the old blood line. No second or third generation poser. You don't know what you're talking about.
I've watched this movie three times now. One thing that few ever comment on is the countryside it was shot in. When I go down into the States this is my favourite place, the south. The Smoky Mountains have to be one of the most beautiful places on the face of the planet. There are some I know who rave about California, but for me, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia.........that's where I want to be. It's quite possibly the best riding country there is. Lots of underused back roads of two lane blacktop winding through the trees, the mountains, and the fields. There's not a lot of money around and it shows, but the folks there are some of the best I have ever met. Quiet, hardworking descent people who, once they get to know you a little, will welcome you and take you into their world. They have a rich sense of humour and a certain mischief about them that you can see in the gleam of their eyes. You could do a lot worse.
I was born and raised in the North, and the Rocky Mountains of NW Montana will always have my heart but my husband is from the South. Its a welcome sight anytime we go to visit. There is a different kind of beauty in the Smoky Mountains and the Swamps, but they are no less breathtaking than the Rockies I love so dear.
My generation (I’m 43 ) growing up in rural America can remember as kids that old timers still talked like this and were pretty quiet in general, only spoke when something needed to be said, some were tough rough SOBs. My grandpa Buster a farmer, Korean Vet, you just didn’t fuck with him.
@Disposable_Teen The crusades were relgious fantastics going on murder spreas. Not as interesting as things like the mafia or old west in America was. The time of lawlessness was one like no other. The danger was real but so was the freedom.
I.have watched this particular scene over 20 times maybe more , each time i discover another angle from the actors .. The Art performance is oozing greatness..
I know women are independent but watching him tell her to go inside love how men used to protect us he just acts like a true old school man in this love him!
I agree, although it's not a patch on Director's pervious two films Aussie classic The Proposition (one of the greatest films of 00's) or The Road. But Lawless is a gem, with a fantastic turn from Tom Hardy and especially Guy Pearce, I didn't love it when I first seen it as I'm not a big fan of Shia LeBeouf, he's no lead actor imo and he's miscast in this. Hardy isn't given as much to do but he still delivers a great performance and his chemistry with Jessica Chastian is great, she's very good in this too. But this is Guy Pearce's film all the way, he really does sinister better then anyone I've seen. Plus throw in Nick Cave's great and bleak screenplay, plus a great soundtrack by him and Warren Ellis and even though I don't think it's Hilcoat's best film I still think it deserves more love then it gets.
Brilliant actor with a brilliant range. Locke is a film about nothing more than him driving in a car talking on the phone the entire time but its brilliant. Reminds me of Colin Farrell in "Phone booth"
I’m from the south and can usually somewhat tell when an actor who is trying to be southern is not by any means. But I really thought he was naturally born in the south. No idea he was British. Amazing!!
Goes to show you how fucked his accent was because this movie was set in central Appalachia, not the south. That's a bastardized Georgia accent and they're supposed to be in Virginia.
It's meant to show he has OCD.. Hence he doesn't like getting dirty or touching stuff without gloves..he shaves his eyebrows and the parting in his hair is actually shaved in aswel lol
Calling someone a SOB was a huge thing back then. My WW1 vet grandfather knocked a man out for calling him that about the timeframe this movie takes place. Grandpa, as I've been told, loved his family dearly but was NOT a man to be crossed. I guess that's why I liked this movie so much as I could imagine him doing some of these things had his life been a little different.
Willysmb44 Im Mexican American and let me tell you there's no bigger disrespect than to call someone a sob or son of whore anything that has to do with someones mom is the ultimate disrespect begging for violence
Tom Hardy, an amazing talent. He was in star trek nemesis. But even then he had his amazing self confidence. You just knew he was a diamond in the rough.
NAhh it was because he was making a non verbal statement that his mind was on another level now that those men were on his property willingly extorting him. Shows he wasn't fucking around.
reminds me of my grandfather. he was a muleskinner in the aroggone forest . came home to be village mayor. he spoke little - but you damn well better listen . he wore a cardigan too. smoked big cigars . nobody fucked with him .
I believe the implication was certainty there in that scene as well (the ring no doubt), an attorney named “Mason”, I mean how more heavy handed can one be in the symbology. None the less the mason brother says good old government line “how can I help you?”, I believe the mason guy was being as honest & honorable as possible and what does Tom Hardy’s character do, act in dishonor to him by claiming he’s going to kill someone.
