There is a growing debate in the Hispanic and Latino communities about using the term “LatinX” as a gender-neutral identifier. Telemundo’s Grace Gomez reports on why some Hispanic lawmakers are going as far as proposing legislation to ban it claiming the term is often misused and offensive.

Ugh. Literally sat threw my little brother’s Hispanic/Latino themed graduation the other day (before his real graduation the following day) with so many school administrators mostly American born and raised with Spanish as their second language who interchanged between Latino of latinx. I barely heard them say Hispanic, and none of them said Mexican-American. I cringed so hard when they said latinx. The crowd of families for the students were so silent every time that fake word was uttered. But they cheered so hard when the real Latino administrators and students who appreciated their own heritage spoke. I even bet my little sister her field trip money that they would try to use latinx in a serious sentence. Now she owes me. We may’ve laughed a little loudly when my sister tried to deny the fact that they used “latinx” just before they actually said it again. Good thing my little brother didn’t care.

But if you find it insulting to you, then it's a slur. That said, slurs are distasteful but not illegal. So again, a waste of time to legislate on it. It's going to vanish on its own.

This I agree with. I absolutely can't stand the 'Great White Savior' calling out people on 'Cultural Appropriation' and such for cultures which are not their own. Typically though, the terms start within the community, and then are 'appropriated' as a sort of Great White Savior complex. Because White people have hegemony, where whatever they/we think is 'right,' it comes around to thinking something is 'woke' or 'LatinX' or 'African-American' is eventually wrong because it's no longer respected as genuine, because of the Great White Savior factor.

As a teacher I've used x to describe that the problem is wrong, as opposed to a check mark that the problem is correct. So I think we should not use latinx. Use latino, latina en español y latin en inglés.

Haha, they used “Estudiante” as an example which is a terrible for the fact that “estudiante” is an actual word. Latine is a completely made up word. Also, if you need to refer to a student in Spanish, you always need to add el or la before the term. So the point is invalid. You will not make us relearn our own language!

"Latinx" cannot be pronounced in Spanish, and it's a racial slur. "Latine" doesn't exist, and there is already a gender neutral form, which is _LATINO._ Ask us Hispanics whether or not we approve of those proposed changes. When they ask us, each time we vote against them.

Why would that matter? Artist, dentist, violinist... these are all gender neutral terms. But we still use waitress, actress, and so forth. The problem with 'politically correct' language today, where writers are customizing but misusing pronouns to fit the gender identities, is that it trashes the language and it's completely unnecessary. We can write in completely gender neutral, politically correct ways, without identify gender or screwing up the grammar.

If you are referring to the community as a whole, the term that should really be used is: Latina. In Spanish, Community, society, latin america are all female (La comunidad, La sociedad, America Latina). So when used in English, the term should refer back to the original language, so it shold be: The latina community. But ultimately, it really is not that important.

In portuguese (and spanish too I think), when there's one male in a group, doesn't matter if the number of females is higher than males, the group is referred to using a masculine word, the words you mentioned are exceptions to the rule. Another example would be country, which is always referred to as latino. The phrase "Bolivia is a latina country" would be wrong in terms of language. From my point of view (brazilian) it kinda sucks because english doesn't attribute gender to words as opposed to spanish and portuguese, so it's easy for americans to make mistakes. I don't understand though why americans aren't satisfied just saying "latin", which is an english gender neutral word. Oh and btw, in portuguese the gender neutral word for latino(a) is latine, but that's a concept relatively new that faces a lot of resistence, so it hasn't caught on yet.

If they did, they would've known Latino is not just male but also the neutral already. They are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist in the first place, and trying to force a people to call themselves a term they never came up for themselves. That is just absolutely disrespectful and it is offensive. Latinx is an insult for almost everyone of Latin America, and that is what they were trying to use in Academia and official matters.

Why not use "latin@"? It's commonly used in many countries in Latin America where the "at" sign which looks like an "o" or an "a". And of course, its use it's not limited to the words "latino"/"latina". We can use it in any words where we want to be neutral about the gender, like "bienvenid@s", "ell@s", etc.

@@MidwestMay Thank you Midwest May for completely not understanding Spanish, and explaining Spanish to a native speaker. If a group of women are standing together, and I am talking to my friends and I point at them: I would say "ellas," or "vosotras" if I'm being Texan. The feminine "they" or ... y'all. If one guy joins that group, I now say ellos. There could be 100 women in that group, and if one guy joins, the word becomes ellos or vosotros. If I am unsure of the gender of the group, I would use ellos or vosotros by default. I am using the masculine version by default. That was the reason people came up with the gender neutral Latinx or Latine.
