Learning how to bowl? Need to tweak your current delivery? Coaching and need a good process of showing a delivery? Look no further!
This is the second installment of a 3 part series on Delivering a Lawn Bowl.
THE STANCE
Coach Darryl Fitzgerald shows off the do's and don'ts of a solid and fundamentally sound stance that should help build a stable and reliable delivery!
Steps to the perfect stance:
- Back foot should step onto mat towards your point of aim
- Front foot should step so it is parallel or slightly in front of your back foot shoulder-width apart
- Knees slightly bent
- Back and Head tilted slightly forward
- Bowling arm slightly bent at the elbow and bowl should be below your waist
- Non-Bowling arm touching elbow or loosely at your side
Your stance should be comfortable, stress-free, and stable!
Thanks to Dan "The Delivery Doctor" Milligan for his coaching and support for bowls in Canada!

just started to play at the age of 77. This follows a bowel operation and thought it a good way to try and keep my fitness. its also a great way to meet new friends both at your own club and when visiting the opposition. Although I was given 4 coaching lessons non of them gave me the detail and confidence I needed. These short videos are great and I have learnt a lot very quickly and I am now enjoying the friendly competition from playing. many thanks

As a new bowler short sharp videos are an excellent way of getting to grips with the basics. Surprising to see many players of some years standing not doing as you suggest. Probably explains their inconsistancy on the green. More please. Thank you. Greatly appreciated. Over here in the UK.

Love your videos!!! Thank you! You mention “Aim Point” What do you recommend bank, level with jack, shoulder or 3-5metres from mat. I can’t seem to find what is best. For long bowls if the aiming point is too close to the mat I seem to bowl short.
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler 2 года назад
Great question Jan! We will have to do a video going over line and bias and how bowls work. For your Point of Aim I always recommend finding things that are stationary and not going to move on the bank or around the green -- so fence posts, rink markers, etc. - not bowls bags, towels as those may get moveds. Then drag that target down on the green so you are looking maybe halfway between you and your target. Usually I'll note the breaking point of the bowl (when the bias kicks in and it moves towards centre) and use that as my distance and work form there. You'll need to play with it moving it farther and closer to find what works best for you and is consistent. Some find it hard to keep a consistent target without looking up at the bank for a marker. Hope that helps!

Can you do a session on tilting the bowl in your hand to take off the bias when you bowl
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler 4 месяца назад
Hi David! Thanks for checking out the video. We are planning to do some special videos on questions we get regularly, so this will be added to that list! Should make for some interesting discussion as not everyone likes the idea of tilting or trying to manipulate your delivery to alter the bias or how a bowl is rolled. Keep an eye on the channel!

Great video!. What are your thoughts on the shooter stance?
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler 2 года назад
Shooter stance is a decent variation on a typical both feet forward delivery. Moving the back for sideways for stability is not a bad idea if you need it. It comes down to how stable you can be throughout the delivery and in the end have your body, arm and as a result the bowl all moving in the same direction. If it helps keep you steady and hitting the line, there's nothing wrong with it. I'd always tell players to experiment with adjustments like that and see if it helps or hinders their overall performance.

Could you please let me know what is being done about the act that the foot that is on or over ring above the mat as I am finding more and more people that appear to be running off the mat giving an advantage as they finish way up the green. Jan Wiltshire.
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler 2 года назад
Foot faulting is a tricky item to cover. Often it's down to an official/umpire making a call on who is/isn't foot-faulting. The act is hard to catch when it's close as you are trying to match up the moment you leave the mat with the moment the bowl leaves your hand. I've seen plenty of comments on videos of people saying many deliveries are foot faults. It's a hard one to judge and would ultimately come down to someone calling it and an umpire enforcing a penalty for it. I've rarely seen that done, so unless it's an egregious fault (like a complete step off then rolling) I wouldn't see much happening regarding foot faulting. I'm always a fan of teaching to hold a second on the mat before following, but many players run off the mat while delivering which can cause people to question the fault.

Hi there. I have been told that my non-bowling arm should be resting on my left knee. I'm right handed. Is this also an acceptable positioning in my stance?
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler Год назад
Having your arm or hand "resting" on your knee isn't a bad thing, but it is an issue when you start putting weight onto it and it becomes an anchor. Someone should be able to come up and freely move your arm/hand without disrupting your delivery. Of course, this changes when we talk about those who cannot balance properly on their own and need that extra support -- then you'd have to get into modifications/alterations to the delivery for those situations.
@yopekok5448

Your lessons are very good. Clear with helpful things to look out for. I like the stand with feet slightly apart. I’ve only had 1 lesson & the feet together stand makes me unstable when i did the delivery. That’s what was taught at the club. I actually got off balance a few times after delivery & now the knee of my anchor right foot really hurts.

What happened to both feet on the mat pointing on the direction you want go?
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler Год назад
Hi Bob, both feet don't have to be on the mat, but they certainly can. No real problem either way. And as stated in the video you want everything pointing in the direction you want to go.
@robbiegreen769
@robbiegreen769 2 года назад
Love this video but I’m very surprised by the way you stand on the mat, 1 foot on the other off, that to me would be unbalanced, I know the mats aren’t thick but if delivery is key then two feet on is for me before delivery, cheer’s I’m a fan and will hit the appropriate buttons.
@CanadianBowler
@CanadianBowler 2 года назад
Appreciate the comment and a great question. The mat really doesn't offer a big sway in height, most are very flat and the one in the video is fairly soft. For a new bowler I would start them somewhere so both feet are on and right in the middle like you suggest. For a new bowler you would want to keep it simple and it's always easy to say "stand with both feet in the middle of the mat". We hope to make a video in the future to talk about delivery adjustments and strategy which would cover using the mat surface area to move forward, back and side to side as small adjustments to line and distance as an example among other tips!
