Well, The Doc has finally got everything together and starting tomorrow morning will be releasing the next 6 videos in the Get Fixed! Delivery Sequence - The Draw Join me, The Delivery Doctor for the Live Premier Sunday February 20th 8 am EST Canada of the Series Intro! The Delivery Sequence was actually shot over a year ago, but you know, the panny and everything being what it's been it's taken a little longer than anticipated to get this project completed. The remainder of this series will be released on a daily basis this week - 6 new videos in all. I'll be around for a bit during and after each release so if you have any questions about the 'video of the day' I'll be right here! Big news on our newly updated website coming soon too!

This video literally changed my life. All these years I had been gripping them wrong, my god. What a fool I was. Well not any more, thanks to the Delivery Doctor my technique is off the fucking charts, can't even stop this. I'm like the Muhammad Ali of lawn bowls. Roll like a butterfly curve like a gotdamn BEE in this bitch. If you need me I'll be in the cut with my lawn bowl ho's.

Glad it helped, Craig. It’s been awhile but I’m getting closer to finding a block of time to record the rest of the delivery sequence series. We have a limited time to record outdoors where I live, so will be recording the series in our studio/shop. It’s a bit tight for space, but I do most of my coaching in that space. I believe in teaching the process... and have always suggested that once the process is in place the outcome will take care of itself.

Hi Doc, Would it be illegal to tape your two middle fingers together while playing comp/s?
@TheDeliveryDoctor
@TheDeliveryDoctor 6 месяцев назад
Hi Alan… good question. That I know of there isn’t anything in the rules to prohibit a bowler from doing this. Golfers do it all the time. I’m not sure in bowls what advantage there would be other than to stop any further injury to the fingers (strains, arthritis) and unless it was two sided tape 😂 I don’t think it would help with gripping the bowl. Having said that, gloves are allowed and they can certainly help with gripping a bowl, especially for those who have very dry hands.

My dear friend, we have spoken in the past, about various aspects regarding bowls. One question that seems to erk me is the cradle grip, and when you bring your hand forward, to deliver the bowl it seems as if you have to overcompensate turning your wrist around to deliver the bow with a straight arm. With the claw grip, the bowl leaves the hand smoothly. So my question is should the bowl be ever so slightly cocked with the cradle grip? You have my home mail, and we agreed to chat some, so get in touch. Richard.

As a new player I received all kinds of advice from well meaning established players. The one thing they didn't really cover and i discovered for myself was how to hold the bowl in a way that was comfortable for me. And that wasn't using what I call the cradle method as you show in this video. I tried it with my thumb on the top of the bowl. This did a couple of things for me. As well as the added security I felt in holding the bowl, the thumb acts as a guide to the direction I'm sending the bowl.

I have always found it amusing that John Dobbie who won Gold and Silver internationally for Australia used a grip that I would only teach to my worst enemy. He had his fingers way up on the side of the bowl with his thumb. The key is to have a grip that allows you to reproduce the same delivery motion again and again. Danny's approach is something everyone can use and is a good starting point for avoiding wobble and overgripping.

I'm brand new and getting lots of advice , for a man I have very small hands ( yes it's TRUE what they say lol) So my question is what size of ball do you recommend? I have been told size1 will be better as the bowl is narrower? After my first bowls it became apparent I have a hook that I need to eliminate if I'm going to get anywhere, So I realise the grip is all important
@TheDeliveryDoctor
@TheDeliveryDoctor 2 года назад
Hi Roger - and welcome to this great game of Bowls. 😂 “I’m getting lots of advice” is something I hear a lot, whether it’s in bowls, golf curling - well - anything! All of it is, I’m sure, well meaning, however not all, and sometimes not very much, is based on common sense, coaching skills, mechanics, or personal bowler traits. As you have probably discovered throughout my videos I am not a fan of the pendular, big backswing. Doesn’t mean it won’t work for some, but if you are one that uses it then you’ll need to have a very firm grip on the bowl else you will lose it out the back on your backswing. With the draw delivery I teach that will, or should, never happen. I’ll have to do a video on bowls selection because there is more involved than just getting a smaller bowl because it’s narrower. Most every size difference comes with a 1/16” change, and at the larger sizes a 2 ounce difference - smaller weight difference as the bowls get smaller. Some bowls have a narrow profile (ie Taylor Legacy Slimline, Taylor Blaze) meaning they are actually slimmer in the hand - not because they are smaller - but because they are actually slimmer! Might be something to look into. The type of grip you have on a bowl will make a difference. Not all manufacturers dimples are the same. Some are deeper (Taylor ProGrip) - some come with an additional deep groove (Taylor Extreme Grip), the latter that may also be something you might want to test out. The key is to get a bowl that is the most comfortable in your hand - in as many different playing conditions as possible - heat, cold, dry, raining, humid, and yes even snow (been there done that!) As in golf, a relaxed grip (such as I show here for Bowls) will allow you to keep the tension out of your delivery, possibly negating any tendency to hook the bowl. I’m assuming your ‘hook’ is on the forehand only? Might not necessarily be your grip… could be any of: flying elbow, hand turning over at or after release, misalignment on the forehand. If you try delivering - without a bowl - in front of a mirror check to see if you palm is facing skyward on your follow through. If it’s turned over chances are pretty good you’ve hooked your bowl because of that. It’s explained in more detail in this series, but it’s something I usually look for first. Ultimately, it still comes down to comfort - don’t be talked into getting the biggest, heaviest you can handle cuz you’ll pay for that choice under less than ideal conditions (again, been there - done that # threw away the T-shirt!)

I have just started bowls and have enjoyed watching your video. Problem is when I try your method I end up cupping the bowl to stop it slipping out of my hand on delivery. Any chance of 'part 2' appearing soon to help me solve this problem or else I might be tempted to grip the bowl!

I have just taken up the game of bowls, I have tried all the grips available on RU-vid video's, some good results, but they are not continuous, resulting in mixed deliveries! There were times when I would have 6 chalkers, then the next game I could not hit a barn door! This grip you have shown us looks good, but it would have been more assuring if we seen you deliver a bowl to the head!

I’ve been having a few issues with my massive website revision but hope to get it uploaded this week (finally). On it will be announcements of the posting of my Delivery Sequence - The Draw - also to be posted here on YT. Truthfully after 54 years in the game and now 40 years of coaching and developing bowls programs I have believed that developing a proper, repeatable process will take care of the outcome of which you speak. The Draw series should help to explain that. And, yeah, there have been plenty of resting touches over the years 😊

@TheDeliveryDoctor
@TheDeliveryDoctor 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Brian. The second vid in the series is my PreStance video - an often overlooked component of the delivery sequence, but one of the most important of any sequence that involves sending an object from one location to another - think golf, darts, even racquet sports. Or, for those who still go - to any fall fair where tossing objects at or on other objects results in a win or a loss, a hit or a miss!

Hi Doc. As a long term video documentary producer let me congratulate you on keeping it simple and understandable. I liked the pause and "oh, you're back" approach. Very friendly. Re the grip. As a Bowls Coach in Australia, I use the same technique with my beginner bowlers. I say "Look at your hand. Find the center line. It runs between your two long fingers.You put the bowl in your hand so the centerline of the bowl runs between those fingers" The fingers must be relaxed or the bowl will not come out smoothly. However I do get them to have the bowl up on the fingers a bit rather than in the palm. Fingers give a smoother delivery out of the hand if they follow through correctly. I use the "Tray of drinks" analogy. They should finish the follow through as if they were holding a tray of drinks. Palm open and palm up, in line with where they were aiming. Waiting for #2 video. Keep up the good work. Rob

+Rob McCubbin Hi Rob... we are not so far apart on this... glad to see that too! as per the palm... I rarely teach that and although it may look that way in this video I never teach a palm grip... finger tips are where the "touch" comes from... working on next videos now and hope to have them up within the next few weeks

HI Pat. Glad it helped. Imo, if we can find a comfortable grip and stick with it, the rest of the game becomes less complicated. I'm in the midst of reworking our website while awaiting our next shipment of bowls and carpets. In the meantime I'm laying out the framework for the video shooting for the rest of the Delivery Sequence Series. After viewing that series if you have any questions, please ask away, and I'll try and incorporate any tips or answers into the Delivery Tips series I'm also working on.
