In part one of my 2019 lawn renovation series we talked about leveling some spots after my irrigation install and also left you with a cliffhanger. In part two we talk about my start of a complete renovation on the north side of my house using 3 different kinds of kentucky bluegrass planted in monostand areas so we can judge them on their own. This goes over how to start over completely with your lawn and we will be talking about the entire process in the next few videos where I'll be leveling the lawn as well.

Hey Ryan, I’m having a “what would Ryan do?” moment... Here’s my scenario: I want to renovate my 50 year old front lawn (1500 sq. ft.). It has probably 50 different old school cultivars of big box grass and the topography is quite lumpy and subtly moundy. Too lumpy for top dressing to fix. So, basically, I want kill it and till it in, and so forth. Problem is, I’m not in the US, so all non-certified organic herbicides are banned. The list of acceptable full spectrum herbicides is very short: acetic acid. So... Knowing those 50 varieties of grass will all spring back to life as soon as I start watering in my new seeds, I’m terrified of ending up with a new lawn containing 54+ varieties of grass. “What would Ryan do??”

NTEP trials are a good start, I’m doing a blend soon in a few weeks, first round of glyphosate complete. I’m doing blue note, dauntless, bolt, and a few others that did well in my area.

I've already started working on my yard. Completely killing it and redoing it, long story short, the grass is just dead. I'm trying out a hybrid bluegrass that claims it's been specifically designed for Texas weather, in combo with a tall fescue mix. It was developed and studied at Texas A&M from the early 90's to late 2000's. It's called HB129, Thermal Blue, Hybrid Kentucky Bluegrass, Tejas Bluegrass. It has a couple different names. HB128 SPF-30 Bluegrass is another variation that's more widely available in the local markets. I'm going to be trying out both, and if it turns out well, I'm going to try to convince the rest of my neighbors to ditch the St Augustine.

Looking forward to see your Mazama results. I too am doing a section of my front yard(about 600sqft) as a Mono Mazama stand. For those that care one of Mazama's parent genetics comes from Midnight, so it should be as dark as midnight and from other reno's ive seen it is indeed very very dark.

My guess is you will be happiest with Midnight. Super dark, incredible variety....When I did my testing I compared it to bewitched and the difference was night to day. Also, bewitched claimed to be shade tolerant and did very poorly in the shade. In my opinion, no KBG does well in the shade. Looking forward to seeing how this goes!! Good Luck!

As always great videos and great editing. Love watching your channel. Don't like all the chemical use though. Viewers with kids at home can't and should'nt use them, too risky and hazardous getting them exposed to the substances. What alternatives would you recommend?

Since you like a low cut, I'm curious why you're not considering a dwarf variety of Kentucky Bluegrass? I have been using one called "Impact" for a number of years (I keep my lawn quite short at 1 1/4" most of season, but the Impact grass apparently can be kept as low as 1/2"). I mix it with a dwarf perennial rye grass. If you like short dense turf these dwarf varieties actually like it.

Doing a 2500 sq ft. lawn reno in Central Iowa (Des Moines). Planning on spraying on Sunday using the same products you used. Looking into buying seed on seed superstore and was wondering about seed rate. Are you following their suggested seed rates? Going heavy? Just trying to calculate how much seed is necessary.

Just use small amounts more frequently on new seed and you will be fine

Ryan why always blue grass. In the UK if we want the finest lawn creeping brown bents and agrostis would be used. as used for the finest golf greens or bowling greens. Check out Cotswold seeds. Most of the seeds come from Canada.

The domination is evident! It’s like a blowout and you need to just pull your starters out of the game. I did a partial kill off last year and a good amount of the nutsedge came back! I didn’t do a double sweep through like you did last year. Would that have fully prevented it from coming back?? So sick of the nutsedge lol

I'm assuming you are using a grass killer without some sort of extended control... even if that's the case, how long will you wait before seeding? I had always thought it took months before soil was ready to seed after using chemical killer.
