Thanks to "Lupton2000" for supplying me the PBS air date - November 21, 1987. I used to record Lawrence Welk every week during the late 70's and 80's. I converted my VHS tapes to DVD's about twenty years ago.
I read an article about how this episode all those came close to not being made. The ABC Network wanted guest Willa Dorsey to sing secular songs instead of the gospel and patriotic song she wanted to sing. Lawrence Welk told he network executives.that either Willa would sing her songs or she wouldn’t do the show. Long story short, the maestro himself won that argument and Willa sang her songs, and one of the best Lawrence Welk shows ever was made.
FYI On the date that this show aired November 21, 1970, half a world away in Vietnam members of the US Army Special Forces were trying to liberate American POW's during the Son Tay Raid.
Thank you for sharing this. We owe a debt of gratitude. I was born in '57, registered for the draft, but then the war ended. My father was in WWII, but there are generations of us who have no idea what those sacrificed for us.
It is ironic that Guy and Ralna are singing “This Land is Your Land” but Guy is playing a nice looking Yamaha guitar made in Japan. Kind of humorous isn’t it?
