I did a similar project down the bottom of my garden. had an 8ft by 6ft patch of ground that used to have laurel trees in. ended up with a tonne of mot type 1. a few paving slabs and 4 railway sleepers to make a raised patio and used a semi dry mortar mix. took ages. should have used your mix. really like your idea of water sbr and cement. i use sbr for sealing plaster for wall tiles and never thought to use it on slabs!but like you it was my first paving project. me being more used to my day job doing houses up on the inside haha! turned out nice in the end though! really love watching your progress on these videos! top man and a great family to watch! thanks. Marc.

Looks like you've undertaken quite a lot of the same work I'm preparing for, we seem to share a love of oak sleepers, too. Looking forward to watching your back catalogue.

Im starting my summer project of an Indian stone patio, gazebo and log cabin plus re-sculpting the garden. Anyway I digress, I'm struggling to find out the m2 coverage for the pointing tubs. My patio will be 24m2, how many tubs would that be? Cheers Loving the path you did with the sets.

I have just purchased limestone slabs and the provider says we must use white cement. What is your base mix please?

Hi - really love all of the vids and so glad I've discovered them. We're two and a half years into a full house refurb and lots still left to do on all fronts. For the patio build I'm struggling to get my head around a few elements - 1) how do you plan in the drainage fall? Is the gradient designed into the sub base? 2) (and I think i know the answer here!) is a mortar bed the way to go or is a sand base on top of the hardcore ok? I've never mixed or worked with mortar so I'm not feeling too confident with that part. Final question in relation to part 1 - how do you plan in the corner stones to mount the timber frame on. I know you mention the concrete slab they are sat on but I simply cannot get my head around using the plumb line. Keep up the great work, really amazing stuff.

Glad they helped. I did fall at sub base stage and then fine tuned it when laying slabs. Mortar bed best and don’t be put off by it, this was the first project of this scale I had done. Unless you want to use staddlestone like we did you can always just pour a generous fitting where you plan to have posts and then lay patio over the top. Then you can just use a steel post bracket bolted down when you are ready to build. Other wise you may end up with two lumps of stone sticking up in your patio for three years like us! Hoping to build the frame this summer though. 👍

hi. ive got my indian sandstone ready for this summers project. i was wondering where you sourced the oak sleepers and the finnish you used on them. TIA.

Tom Sweeney we get our oak sleepers from Bradfords however they are only in certain counties. You can try eBay or a local landscaping supply. Finish is OSMO uv oil, it is only really needed if you want the golden colour or to stop oak greying. Oak sleepers untreated will be fine for a long time.

Which SBR did you use?

A basic builders merchant SBR. Wouldn't think it matters too much.

Hi, i just wanted to ask what your slurry mix is made up of, im doing a patio next year and i have always wetted the underneath of the slabs but the slurry looks a better idea! Great video! I have an old property (1875) and i have learnt a lot from your videos!
@TheRestorationCouple

Glad you like the videos. :-) You can buy pro prime slurry however I used 50/50 SBR and water and then thickened up with dry cement until thick and creamy, custard type consistency. Works very well and is pennies to do. It also helps to stop staining coming up through the paving as well as a super strong bond. Search bonding slurry as there is lots of advice online.

Where did you buy your SBR from, Who's brand? Thanks in advance!!

Got through a couple of bottles, one was screwfix/no nonsense and teh other was twice the price from a builders merchant, which was possibly slightly better. Think they do vary tin strength.
