Your gun technique is really good. I think its the product your using that is contributing to the orange peel. I have the prolite and its honestly really hard for me to get orange peel as long as im using good quality clear. Great gun in my opinion, very versatile

Texture is normal. You sprayed clear over base that gained some measure of texture as that was sprayed. Then you have clear which sprays and grabs dirt in a makeshift booth. If you are gonna cut the nibs out anyway just start at 1500 makes it flat go 2 rounds of 2000 and it will be perfect.

I would clean a spot on the old hood then prime/paint/clear it then do a color sanding to see if you can eliminate the orange peel effect you are experiencing with this clear! Or try a spot on the under side of the good hood.

Good stuff bro, lots of extra work but in the end the finish product will b amazing. Plus you don’t want to do just good enough especially when you touch every nut and bolt on this truck you hate knowing there are areas you could have done better even though only you would know what spots you could have fixed but left it. That’s y I like your channel and content you go above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect. So that the end finish is incredible.

Try using a higher temp reducer, so the clear has more time to flow out. I Try to use reducer that is the next step higher than the actual temp. Just be careful not to run it !!!

I haven’t shot that tamco clear yet but maybe you might be waiting little bit to long in between coats of clear. Your second coat of clear isn’t melting into your first coat to get rid of the orange peel for the 1st coat. Or try doing a 3rd coat of clear and reducing it 10%-15% more as a drop coat that’s worked for me in the past. But the job looks amazing to me for a home built booth in the cold 🤙🏼

Slow down a little... check your temperature booth to product... slightly adjust the pressure and allow it flash a little longer between coats.. Overall it looks great 👍 especially in a DIY booth and sketchy ventilation...lot of fog in the air... it will buff out. 😎👍

Orange peal is gonna be either moisture in the lines or just humidity/ temperature/ weather based. Not usually a gun/ tip problem. And yeah you spray way too close and just move around way too much. Nice full panel length (side to side) even strokes overlaping a couple of inches over the previous pass working from "top to bottom" is what you want to aim for. At the end of the day it's a daily driver so i wouldn't sweat it too much let alone spend the time to cut/buff it. Looks great for what it is!

I would double check the pressure you are shooting at with the clear and try to switch the booth from positive pressure to negative (change the fans to exhaust the air). You currently have a lot of clear automizing and hanging in the air. This in my experience can cause issues with the clear you have just laid down. Lowering the pressure and slowing down on your passes, plus the air change up should help tremendously. Great gun technique btw. You seems very comfortable with a paint gun in hand. Keep up the good work and thanks for the content!

I did switch to a negative pressure with some better filters. I’m shooting clear at 28-30 psi! Yeah there is a lot of clear hanging around!!

@Austin Niemela good deal on the fans! I'd probably try to add another larger fan or an "industrial" style that can move more CFM. I built out a box trailer to paint in and have 2 fans that move around 2000cfm each and I still get some clear hanging in the air. I guess at the diy level you will have to decide between cut/buff time vs throwing $ at it. End of the day your projects are looking good and definitely better than most diy's would. Thanks again for taking the time to add the content!

@Austin Niemela also...I shoot my paint around 22 to 25psi through a sata minijet with a 1.0 tip and my clear at 18 to 22psi with a finex fx1000 and a 1.0 tip. Spraying cromax brand snap dry with 75 degree reducer/activator. (I fix wheels at dealerships so I only need small guns lol)

My FJ cruiser had some wild orange peel looking ..... finish.... in the big quarter panels behind the suicide doors. Id say you are looking like Toyota paint quality from the time the truck was built. In other words.. it looks damn good.

That’s one cloudy spray booth Bro. You might want to up the CFM on those fans, isocyanates are not good. You might need a fan to pull it out the overspray. On the orange peel even the best painters get peel all “show car are cut and polished” When guys lay it down like glass they are seconds away from getting runs that’s why having a spray oven in a shop Is key because they set the clear quickly and avoid runs,, it’s just your attention to detail is always at 10/10 so your spewing about nothing. Just Cut and polish the Ute Do you guys have 3M Trizact it’s the best for a full depeel all the was too 3000g

How many coats of clear did you lay down on it?, the reason for those orange peel was your not letting the clear coat to flash, and I noticed that your laying it down thick and not letting it flash..

On camera looks good I'd stick with 1.2 or 1.3 tip and lower psi to about 20 psi and keep a 70% over lap and move a little slower Don't know what actovator or reducer your using in your clear Higher air pressure just means more over spray and that means less metal on your truck and more in the air

The reason why is because you do a very wet pass with clear the first pass of clear should be a lighter pass not to wet the second pass is more wetter

Keeping the emblems off? Where I live, that's illegal. If cops pull you over, they have to know what your vehicle make and model is. And they ticket you as a primary offense for tinted brake lights.

Is it orange peel or is it just texture? Orange peel is caused by (usually) silicone products and can be a massive pain in the ass to remedy. Texture is just texture and can usually be remedied by a cut/buff.

You nailed your problem at the end of the video, you’re moving about 30% too fast. Slow it down a bit. Also, what pressure are you spraying at? You are pumping out a lot of overspray in the air. Another problem you might be having is thermal equilibrium. What is the temperature of the booth and the temperature of the metal when you’re spraying? If the metal is too cold it’ll cause the paint to shrink when it hits the surface.

I was about 30psi. Metal and air temp right about 70! I ordered some slow hardener to help it not flash so fast!
