@@Geppaku the pb is that if you build thomas like in this video (full HP) you dont have enough ER to make the full combo with his ult. So in real fight you will not be abble to have the full stacks. In real you have to put a er weapon or sand of time (so you have less HP).
Just put favonious lance on him it solves most of his energy problems and gives particles for the rest of team and his shield is still strongest or second strongest and he's been doing perfectly fine for me (zhongli still stronger cause he has utility outside of his shield and is a 5* tho obviously)

Also, just to note, replacing black tassel with ER weapon (for me I use Kitain for Burgeon) will not yield that much of a significant difference especially since you refresh it as you stack (while you use NA).

Don’t forget that Zhongli and Leyla can use “4-piece artifact of Tenacity set” effectively Tenacity Set Effects : 2-Piece: HP +20% 4-Piece: When an Elemental Skill hits an opponent, the ATK of all nearby party members is increased by 20% and their Shield Strength is increased by 30% for 3s. This effect can be triggered once every 0.5s. This effect can still be triggered even when the character who is using this artifact set is not on the field. Moreover, both of them Zhongli and Leyla have 100% uptime for E skill that means they are able to efficiently trigger buff from the Tenacity set all the time, so the best shielders could be : 1st is Zhongli , 2nd is Leyla
Edit: Since new people show up to the reply section, I stand corrected and the following is fake news. Have a great day everyone ^^ Actually, the shield strenght bonus only applies when Leyla or Zhongli is on the field. The buff is gone when switching to another character (4-Piece bonus)

you meant to say , beidou, Yunjin, and Candace?XD they are all counters but also work as shields. I honestly never saw my Yunjin get any damage while holding her E while both Beidoe and Candace usually get damaged instead, if the damage is big of course.
Crazy how good Noelle is considering that she’s available to everyone. Nothing like a character than can be a defensive tank dps healer. To bad I don’t need her most of the time with Benny and Xiangling. One day I will have Yun Jin to complete my mono-geo team.
I exclusively use mono geo Noelle and she destroys everything. I can't wait till next banner for C6 Gorou so I can make my crit damage 219% (for reference my highest crit rn was a 78k Shield Bomb & like a 60k+ Albedo flower plunge attack, normal 4th attack hits about 42k). I've even considered making a Lv90 Favonious GS and soloing everything with Noelle. This is with Gorou & Yunjin talents at 8 and C0 too.
I'm a Noelle main I love her! Itto isn't really fun for me ( I know I know ) But here's my teams if you are interested: geo- pyro: Noelle, Albedo, Xiangling, Bennett (is good because the pyro generates crystalize and thus 100% uptime shields) mono geo: Noelle, Albedo, Gorou, Yunfin/Zhongli. Depending on if I want a shield or just buffs I switch those two, but lets not forget Zhongli shreds geo resistance with his skill! Noelle never disappoints me and it was so worth it refining the BP's claymore just for her :)
It makes sense that Noelle is the one freebie wish char given she can play so many roles for an early player’s team. Need dps? She can do that! Need healing/shields? Got both! Need someone to take all the def scaling artifacts? Boy do I have good news for you!
@@cunnyman considering her unique tech that is maintaining infusion on swap (shared with both Diluc and Keqing) + the ability to extend her burst to the max 10 seconds at C6 with a little bit of quickswap magic, a bit of practice can heavily mitigate her needs. I think Mihoyo did a good job getting the shield archetype right in this game. There's a fair number of characters with shielding capability but each one of them feels unique and their overall kits have plenty of positives and negatives to ensure that choosing one over another is rarely a black and white decision.
for most shield i agree, but geo will ALWAYS be the stronger shield simply because the nature of the element absorbing ALL attacks and not only the elemental one.
These Ruin Guard missiles are no joke, though. The fact that Layla could tank 11 and Thoma when fully-stacked tanked 15 hits are quite a testament of their strength.
It's really strong if you don't take damage for a long time. But in the usual case of being negligent after having a shield up, his shield easily breaks after a few hits with just few stacks.
its kinda hard to stack with. even with hutao that usually do 2 normal hit then charge attack rarely get hit. probally you will feel it if playing burgeon thoma
Reminder to everyone this is just a very basic and general test, there are many ways to strenghten shields such as the hydro resonance, geo resonance, any damage reduction, DEF boost etc

@@FluffyWaffle33 What? I'm not saying Healing Effectiveness affects shield, I'm saying Shield Strength does not work *the same way* Healing Effectiveness does. In other words, in much simpler terms, in case you still don't understand, Healing Effectiveness increases a healer's heal while Shield Strength *does not* increases a shielder's shield.
which is basically garbage knowledge XD because in a normal fight, you're no gonna have the chance to stack that much while enemies attack and you switch characters to use skills. It is a good shield when stacked but most of the time, you just don't have the time, to add all those stacks.
@@WastedTalent83 you dont need to swap characters to stack his shield i use thoma so i can explain. u use his burst u use his skill then u swap to ur main dps as long as your main dps uses normal attacks like ayato or wanderer or alhaitham or even raiden shogun those normal attacks will stack his shield also you do not need to stack thomas shields, if thoma shield breaks and your active character uses a normal attack and thoma burst is still up it will apply a new shield ( a weaker shield but a shield) so his shields best benefit is that it is constantly being refreshed as long as normal attacks are being used i use him with both ayato and wanderer and they take no damage in abyss floor 12. and i use nobelesse on him not even shield str artifacts. the biggest downside to thoma is he doesnt do alot of offfield damage but his shield is very good. (and at c6 he gives a 15% atk boost when his shield is refreshed which is everytime a normal attack goes out) i feel like a majority of the community doesnt understand how thoma kit works or they just want to shit on him cause its a meme.
So a solid shield, even without C3 (I estimate it would soak 2 more hits). And when a good HP sword is available for her, you could maybe soak another 1 or 2 more. Which would put her on par or above Noelle and full stack Thoma. But she'd be easier to keep a shield up than Thoma and easier than anyone but Zhongli to keep 100% uptime on.
Yeah, right now you either go harbinger of dawn ( bruh), favonius ( if you manage to hit the enemy with the shield cast) or key of kaj... Not that good. Hopefully fontain can bring home an hp party buffer sword.
I haven't even leveled up any of Layla's artifacts yet, and my growth team, which is randomly thrown together (for gaining friendship points) takes no damage at all. You just have to time you're rotations right. A pretty fun team to use her with is Yae, Candace and Nilou. Start with Layla's shield skill, switch to Yae and use her skill around the enemies, switch to Candace and bop the group with her shield skill, then finish up with Nilou, switching back to Layla as soon as the shield drops, if done correctly you'll never take a hit.
Noelle's burst doesn't increase the strength of her shields. It adds her defense stat to her attack stat to increase the strength of her normals. It will increase the damage the shield deals when it explodes since the defense stat will embellish the attack stat for the shield break's 400% potency to pull from, but it will not increase the amount of damage the shield could take to begin with. What you may be thinking of is that when Sweeping Time and Breastplate are both active, the chance of Noelle's normal attacks resulting in a heal for the party increases from 50-60% to 100%. This would not effect the shield's damage absorption.
It does not. What you are thinking about is Noelle with her own shield, probably meaning that its not the shield that can take more as much as Noelle taking WAY less due to her defense stat itself.
The other important thing to keep in mind is uptime on the shield. Zhongli has the best shield in terms of strength there is no doubt of that. But what makes it even better is that it also reduces enemy resistances and you can reapply it before its timer runs out. While I haven't tested all the other character's shields. I definitely feel like Layla might have the second-best shield. Its cooldown timer is 12 seconds and the shield last for 12 seconds. So you could keep it up indefinitely assuming you don't take more damage than it can handle.
@@thegrinningreaperr I'm usimg the flowers team.. why I named my team flowers? Because they can unleash a flowers skill.. like Ayaka deals frozen sakura petals burst.. Yae deals thunder sakura petals. And two other.
Correct me if I'm wrong. @@vikryarsana5081 This is true, though the upside is that the emergency shield is way stronger than her normal one (IIRC). The downside is that its on a very long cooldown, so it should not be part of your game plan.

I switched to Layla for Zhongli as main shielder, tap is more convenient and saves time than holding. Moreover Layla's shield is great against cyro enemies, like Abyss mages or slimes, also hydro enemies get frozen when touched or by her stars, same applies for other mobs when another hydro unit is in the team. All in all, apart of shield strenght, It has many more aplications that help a lot.
I've swapped Layla in for Diona in my Heizou/Sucrose freeze team and TBH I like her better. The way her shield and burst apply additional cryo along side of Rosaria makes this team really powerful and fun to play while Diona was more a "I needed a second cryo who could generate energy not necessarily add to my damage potential" unit. Is she a replacement for Diona in my Ganyu freeze team? I don't know yet, but I have a suspicion that her kit is meant for the long awaited new 5 star former Harbinger we've been waiting for, coming out next patch.
Diona's also key to a Dragonstrike comp (thanks to the added movement speed of her shield), the comp where Diluc actually deals almost double the damage he normally does + has decent amounts of healing. It should be a decent payoff
First video showing reallity of Zhongli continue being the best shielder of the game. I have no doubt of it. But I was a bit tired of click-bait videos saying: "Layla better shield than Zhongli?". So here it is the answer: NO. Thanks for this video!
Oh, fuck off. He’s extremely useful for characters that can’t afford to get interruption or need to be low on HP like Xiao and Hu Tao respectively. Just because you suck at knowing how the game works or you busted your ass pulling shit 5 stars doesn’t mean anything. He’s an extremely flexible character that can be used on almost any team. I say this as someone who doesn’t have him and would love to have him with my Xiao and unfortunately won’t pull Hu Tao on her rerun (even though I absolutely love her) because my other teams perform better than these two characters without Zhongli.
@@sunright20475 There's also some characters who need shields too, like Yoimiya, Ganyu, Tighnari, etc. Don't forget that Zhongli shreds nearby enemies' resistance too. The only problem Zhongli is facing right now is DPS loss (casting skill and burst takes time), lack of particle generation, and shield addiction (Zhongli users know this well).
You can see that it needed to tank 175 more damage to get to 11 hits. But since pyro shields have 250% resistance to pyro damage, the grass would have to do over 400 damage. Sadly meaning it wouldn't have had an effect.
i love that you actually used thoma correctly and didnt just be like those narrow minded people who only want to think that thoma is weak and a bad sheileder
you don't usually do 25 attack to strengthen the shield before entering a fight, so most of the time you're gonna use the shield without stack. Reason why people don't think much of his shield. You either kill enemies too fast, or the shield is not gonna last enough to do all those stacks without ever getting attacked , like in the video. I'm not saying its a bad shield, i don't think any character has a bad shield in this game, but probably it has too many gimmick linked to the "stronger" version of the shield, to be considered practical and strong.
@@WastedTalent83 as a thoma user, trust me, you do use all 25 stacks. even if you kill it quikcly, it doesnt matter. and if its a tankier boss or mob, the stacks come quick and help easy. layla e-skill 10th lvl 43k hp, zhongli e-skill 8th lvl 53k hp. Anyway zhongli's shield is the best among geo shields, and geo shields are far more better than other ones, so Zhongli solo's
Да , в то время как другие щиты могут хорошо поглощать урон от аналогичных элементов, у Чжун Ли нет такой проблемы , он урон от всех элементов поглощает одинаково.
I got Layla today from the event, so happy to use her with Wanderer!! I wanted to pull for Thoma, bit why was he put on Klee/Eula banner instead in 3.8…. Well, Layla is great too, and I don‘t need to hit opponents for her shield to stay
I still think I’ll use Diona more since I’m a Razor main. She just allows Razor to be more reckless with both her shield and healing. I usually put more emphasis on her healing regardless. Though Layla seems pretty good
Diona offsets her shield strength with utility (upfront particles, heals, speed). Hell, I prefer Diona for Diluc because she helps in Dragonstrikes + her C6 gives a fat amount of EM for Diluc's melt damage to skyrocket
This is a Layla with talent level 8. Not 11. This means that Layla should be able to take up to 13 hits minimum, and with a jade cutter or nilou's sig weapon, at least 15 hits
Thing is, not everyone will want to level Layla's talent that high, or give her a 5 star weapon. Zhongli has value bc he does just fine without a crown, using a 3 star polearm.
trust me XD its a useless shield, because its based on her HP , so unless you want to use her as a tank (which makes no sense) the shield will be much less strong than showed in the video. Since you're gonna stack EM crit and crit damage, and IF you're lucky get some HP % here and there.
Noelles shield is so strong but the uptime just sucks, Laylas is really good and her uptime is 100% but your rotations have to accommodate it While Zhonglis is literally the best already and has like 150% uptime
I used Layla and Paired her with Beidu. Laylas shield and Beidu's parry. But then I changed the tactics for tank build. In the end you can't trust shield in high level boss. So tank is the only option.
correct me if I'm looking at this wrong, but was Yanfei's shield not stronger than Laylas? It looks to me like Layla's absorbs 10 hits whilst Yanfei took nearly 11 Both showed dmg ticks from 2 rockets (2 waves of 6 rocket, -2 = 10 hits fully tanked), but Yanfei had the 11th nearly full tanked too
Also might have to do with the fact that we currently don’t have a lot of hp scaling swords (aka we only have one which is a 5 star so if you didn’t get it you have like no alternatives) so in turn her shield is going to be weaker since we do have hp scaling catalysts.
True but it's only noelle who can survive that because of her high DEF. You can put Zhongli's shield on a high def character like Itto or Noelle and they will survive even longer..
finally a decent shield comparison and FINALLY I understand how Thoma works 😭 lmaooo and sth I wanted to add: Don't forget both Xinyan and Noelle gain extra def stacks from Whiteblind! Plus, Noelle also profits from the 4pc bonus granted by husk of opulent dreams, most effectively during her burst ofc, granting her even more def in the process - especially when her Whiteblind stacks are full before triggering her burst and increasing the stacks by her artifacts through that. ALSO: one of Noelle's passives grants a party member with low hp a shield absorbing 400% of her def which is over a 100% more than it can take on skill level 10 (288% + 1693) (even on skill lvl 13, meaning with her being c3 and crowned, the dmg absorption is below that of her emergency shield for party members (340% + 2k or sth). Can you tell I was a Noelle main for a good while? My girl is a BEAST sjsksjs
I love Noelle and have her c6 with amazing Husk artifacts and R2 Serpent Spine but i don’t rely on her shield. She is not he best shielder and that’s ok, she is well rounded over all and doesn’t need this amount of reaching to be a good unit
@@itstruethough604 I never meant to say she was the best shielder, she obviously still has immense issues with her shield uptime and personally I have a dps build for her as well nowadays. I was just trying to point out that what's shown here is pretty much her base shield without any weapon and artifact stacks for an even buffer shield. 😄 ofc she's never gonna beat someone like Zhongli and we'll eventually get even stronger shielders. Noelle is just a great all-rounder for newbies. 😊
Thoma shield is really good but i can't stand that stacking for his shield in order to get his shield strong. Noelle is also good but her skill cooldown is too long.💀

don't forget that while other shields can absorb damage from similar elements well, Zhong Li doesn't have this problem, he absorbs damage from all elements equally.
As SOLO shielders (Not talking about team composition, that changes everything) Zhongli the best shielder The second is now Noelle and Layla Third is Thoma And Yanfei is 4 People are saying that Thoma is the best, no, his shield takes a long time to stack, until that the shield is gone. Layla can do a 100% shield, even if it's weaker than Noelle's, the time surpass it, so I think both of them are good in some aspects Noelle is better than Thoma, her shield is a simple option to be so strong, just put it and you have a good shield, besides the cooldown, it's insane
You don't need to stack up shield before fight. You can do that during the fight. While you're auto-attacking, thoma's shield will get healed up. Noelle's shield is technically weaker than thoma's shield with full stack, but it is stronger in most cases. That being said, her biggest flaw is her shield uptime... It's painfully long compared to thoma's 100% shield uptime
@@mahamib The only issue with Thoma in your example is that you have to maintain the shield while stacking. When you are up against bosses or enemies with high damage 1-hit moves in situations like spiral abyss then it becomes difficult to stack the shield if they can break it before you can stack it. BUT Thoma's shield is plenty strong if you are able to stack it, so he's still a good shielder.
@@fhantom2115 If we're assuming that the boss pulls out high damage attack the second you encounter it, then yes it could be a problem. But I have never encountered that. @@mahamib Oh I definitely agree it's tanky. I was just pointing out one possible drawback with his shield's design. I think it was Maguu Kenki's aoe blast after damaging 1/3 of his health where I had that problem.
