This National School Counseling Week, Proof Positive had the pleasure of speaking with Louisiana elementary school counselor Layla Touchet (@theneurodivergentcounselor) about her journey as a neurodiverse counselor, how she builds wellbeing supports into her work, and what she does to prioritize her own wellbeing.
Layla was the 2022 Louisiana Overall School Counselor of the Year and is currently working on her PhD in Counseling. She is Autistic and ADHD (late diagnosed), and for the past 3 years she’s been running a neurodivergent initiative to help teachers, staff, and any other humans interested to better support and understand neurodivergent humans. She creates weekly resources on different aspects of neurodivergence, gives presentations to parents, staff, and other stakeholders, advocates for 504s and special education evals, and in general, creates a neurodivergent friendly environment in her office.
