Umpire Laz Diaz called Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes for a quick pitch vs Chicago's Corey Julks one pitch after Cortes delayed his delivery with a "slow pitch", but complicated matters by citing a technical rule about stepping off and on the rubber instead of a more obvious one. Umpires, keep your calls simple! Article: www.closecallsports.com/2024/...

YOU CANNOT HAVE A BALK WITH NO RUNNERS ON BASE.
This is an illegal pitch because it is a quick return pitch. The pitch prior (the "slow pitch") isn't something subject to penalty (because the bases are empty), but it could get a "don't do that" instruction if the umpire wishes to give it.
