Michelle says she is at her wits’ end with her jobless 22-year-old grandson, Conner, who, according to her, isn’t just lazy but has “failed to launch.” Michelle claims Conner, who has lived with her for the last year, does not regularly shower, brush his teeth, shave, clean his room, or change his clothes. He also has never met his girlfriend of five years in person because, according to Michelle, “that would involve having to leave the house.” Conner says Michelle is overreacting and that at 22, he “shouldn’t have life figured out.” He says he hasn’t yet met his girlfriend in person because of finances. Conner’s mother, Jamie, says she agrees Conner is lazy but believes her mother Michelle is making matters worse by being too strict on him. Dr. Phil arranges for Conner to have a one-on-one session with life development coach Mike Bayer to understand why Conner may be struggling to launch and discusses his new book, One Decision. Will Conner accept the help offered to him? Tune in to find out!

It's not that he's 22 and living at home. If he was in school or had a job where he is atleast trying to become more self sufficient. There are plenty of responsible 20 somethings that live with their parents and are in school full time or working full time, and that is fine as long as the parents agree to it. However, he is also complaining about his situation without doing anything about it, which Dr. Phil is trying to address that that can be changed by moving out. He most likely definitely has clinical depression that needs to be addressed. Once his mother and grandmother are gone, what is he going to do?

Not gonna lie, I lost all respect I had for Dr. Phil. I'm 26 and I'm just now getting my life together because of mental issues preventing me to in the past. Everyone has their own timeline, not everyone can get a job and a house and be married with children by 20 years old especially in today's economy AND during a pandemic. Everyone battles their demons differently, and tbh this family sounds super toxic and the fact Dr. Phil did this on television is even more toxic. Actual garbage human behavior. I'd love to hear Dr. Phil's "excuses" for the reason he acted towards this guy. This is the biggest boomer nonsense I've heard in my life and it honestly to say it makes me angry is an understatement. Doesn't even try to help him, literally just verbal abuse and gaslighting. Dr Phil, you honestly are just bullying this kid. Yes, he does need to get his life together but none of this is even the slightest bit supportive. You're not going to get a 22 year old with obvious depression to "suddenly turn his life around" by insulting them. A minimum wage job, in most places, can barely afford any appartment. And it's absolutely atrocious how much you down played the effects of the COVID lockdown had on those 17 to 25 trying to get a job. They don't have the work experience so they're on the absolute bottom of the list to be hired when the companies are hiring those with ton of experience who were also furloughed. I'm 24 and it took me half a year to get a new job after reduced hours even with a college degree. I was putting out 10 to 20 applications a day too. There were so many months where I almost couldn't afford rent if it wasn't for my wife's job being deemed essential. Boomer's really can't comprehend that you can't go out and get a job in a week. You apply, you wait 1 to 2 weeks for a reply and then another 2 to 3 weeks for the interview process more than likely ending in a no. Instead of calling this kid a lazy piece of s***, maybe actually give a f*** and connect with him and guide him. He obvious doesn't like gardening and doesn't have the back bone to say it. Find something else! Actually parent the kid! Help him, don't just tell him why he's trash. The grandmother could have just as easily cut of the wifi he uses which clearly shows her enabling him. Dr. Phil I usually love you videos but here you just disappoint. What happened to you actually talking it out with them. And I know for a fact there are many episodes you did with this exact scenario and blamed the kid AND the parents for allowing the kid to get this way. Get this kid a friend to guide him, NOT a boomer who can't be bothered with relating to their kids and telling them that everything bad in their life is their own fault. Honestly that's how you drive a kid to suicide.

*_They don't have the work experience so they're on the absolute bottom of the list to be hired_* You know how you gain work experience? You spend your days spamming employers with applications and resumes until someone hires you instead of spending 6-12 hrs playing video games. While I agree Dr. Phil was dismissive, you can't say "I don't have work experience" and in the same breath say you spend most of your time sleeping or playing video games. It's one thing to say "I have no work experience" if you're out everyday, knocking on doors, putting in applications, etc. But no one is going to take you seriously if you aren't at least _trying your best_ to correct the problem. Back when I was in my early 20s and my parents were pressuring me to get a job, I literally spent entire days going door-to-door. I would look at classifieds in the newspaper to see who was hiring and make a list of stops. Moral of the story: If you DO NOTHING, EXPECT NOTHING.

Am I saying that earning money is the only thing that matters in life? No! But in this society, that we live in(Joker), you need to at least have a job that pays for your basic needs. Of course, he doesn’t have to have life figured out already, he is just 22, like I am, but he should have been spending a great amount of his time seeking a job (his number one priority as he admitted). Well... what if he was studying instead of working? That would be legit! But he said on the show that he couldn’t study, bc he needs a teacher “there”. I mean, he is obviously lying to himself! But I agree with you in the sense that all this exposure on live television could lead to a worsening of his depression(he may not have it - I don’t know). But, as Mike said “everybody goes though some hardships”. Bad things happens to us, but we have to overcome them and look (fight) for a better future.

I get what you are saying but there's a difference between understanding someones mental issues and just being enabling. I'd say this is a blunder on his guardians' part. They've obviously spoiled him and not put any sort of responsibility on his shoulders during childhood and early teens, and by the time he reached his 20s all of a sudden everybody is saying "Get out and get a job" when they didn't even mentally prepare him for those hurdles in life, they just expect him to pick it up and know it all. Adding all that on top of anxiety would just make things ten times worse. I don't think it has anything to do with his own "worth" I think it's more about being afraid of change and stressful situations in life, which is something everyone goes through as an adult.
@Junginj

@@lolaminer5 I agree that they have enabled him and probably didnt teach him any better about life while he was growing up. But it doesn't explain why he's unmotivated or lacks basic hygiene. Most people have odd ways to reduce stress not always coloring drawing and taking deep breaths everyone different 5- definitely try to look more into the excuses to have a better mindset of how to solve the problem instead if just saying "oh you're lazy" because most of the stuff does affect him and you as a doctor can help get through that and overcome his fears or calm them down so hes atleast able to get a job get a GED get a driver license Not saying let the dude live and let him play games all the time he needs to eventually get his life together and not depend on his grandma and mom but what you did doesn't really seem like it helped the situation kinda disappointed that you didnt try to understand more of what was going on and to help solve the problem because shaming somone when they dont really deserve it doesnt fix the problem

Amazing that Connor is being ridiculed for all these 'excuses', of which some are reasonable responses and reasons for his actions, when none of the other family members are also being told the same thing on their responses blaming others. Where do you think this kid has picked it up from if you're going to label all his responses like that?! There are so many things wrong with how he is treated! As a fellow 22 year old, none of the things that Dr. Phil, the life coach or his family are doing or saying to him would help his current situation. "Why don't you just get a job?" - I'm sure the millions of people who have been left unemployed and those coming out of education trying to find work during this pandemic find this extremely helpful, thank you Dr. Phil.

Depression is a serious condition. This dude reminds me of how I was right before I was pushed to the edge and went to a treatment center with my husband’s help. The thing about depression is that your brain lies to you so much that you don’t think you need help because you aren’t worthy of it. Even when I was adapting to my meds, doing laundry as my only chore was a challenge; each time that I did it, it felt like an achievement. This “tough love” won’t help. Medication and maybe a trip to a clinic to give him some rest from that tension to refocus may be what is needed. With treatment, he can improve and thrive. I did, and I am still adapting, but in an upward trajectory.

First off I do have a decent paying job and my own house but I see a lot of me in Connor. He wants to take better care of himself, he wants to get a decent paying job and he wants to move out on his own. However I think that it’s very obvious that every time he starts to make progress towards those goals the people close to him say that’s not good enough because you aren’t there yet instead of encouraging him to continue pursuing those goals and Phil just did the same thing. P.S. I purposely didn’t include Dr because he’s not one and he hasn’t been for a long time and this episode shows why.

“The world isn’t fair” is the summary of the Gen Z perspective. And who fed us that line? For a lot of us, our parents. I’m 23 and moved out and functioning, but life was always portrayed as this scary unforgiving thing and sometimes it still feels that way when I have to take care of things. There’s been little reassurance for many of us who have had to step out into the hellscape in the name of growing up. The fact that older adults don’t get that and then wonder why some of us can’t emotionally handle it is beyond me. You didn’t toughen anyone up by saying “Life isn’t fair.” You just told us that we have to face it alone.

I just found a person who is going to walk me through wiring my breaker box! I get free things, and am looking for young persons 3 who want to learn how to build with Cob, aka Adobe, using Mexican lath from a palm tree! That's free. And here in Mexico children live with their parents until they get married and leave. Traditionally the boys will bring wife to parents home until they can get on their feet. But everyone either works or goes to school or stays home and helps run the household if your a woman. Sorry but that's how it is, however it's been changing and has changed.

I didn't get a drivers license until I was 25, because I was scared & my parents didn't make me do anything. I'm honestly baffled by how many people are defending Connor and misinterpreting what dr phil is saying. Conner is making excuses. Conner has no direction. He doesn't want to get a job, because he doesn't want to stop playing video games day in and out. Conner isn't a night owl, he sleeps in until 3pm and then games until 5am. Of course he can't fall asleep at night. Connor dropped out of high-school, refuses to go out and get his ged, he refuses to work, he expects his family to stop nagging him when he's living completely rent free with no goals. Maybe he's depressed, but that is no excuse to have everything handed to him. I'm also not saying its easy to become self sustainable, but dr phil is simply saying why aren't you working? Why haven't you gotten your ged? If your living with your grandparent rent free, why are you spending all day every day gaming instead of bettering yourself? Hes saying it in this kind of way to try and kick him into gear. I joined the military directly after high school. After that I worked one job to this day while attending online college. I like to game. Its one of my favorite hobbies. But it has never kept me from making money to support myself. The goal is not to work 9-5 your entire life, but you have to start somewhere. And before anyone uses the boomer comeback, I'm 24 years old. 2 years older than Connor.
