John shows us how to install the Lazy Granite (lazygranite.com) kitchen countertop system. This is all natural granite, mini slab solution. It's a lot nicer than 12x12 tile but a heck of a lot less expensive than granite slab. Remodel your kitchen counters on a reasonable budget. Install granite for the same cost as formica. www.lazygranite.com

Excellent product! Did 2 kitchens, one with Absolute Black Lazy granite tile, another one with dark Tan Brown color. Pennies for spacers, charcoal sandless grout, seams really thin, no more then 1/16", take just a little more time, but looks much nicer then one on this video. Cost me about 6- 7 times less then same color granite slabs to install.

You guys have made a careful and detailed video. I don't know if the detractors understand that this is a compromise - if they don't like the look pay for a full granite installation - or get lots of grout lines and unevenness and go with tile Maybe they would like to try making a professional epoxy finish. I make educational videos for a living. You cover the steps. Explain why/how and give just enough of an image to get what you mean. kudos to who ever scripted this and all who worked on it. People on RU-vid are spoiled and half the time don't pay attention to the true intention - which in this case was - if you choose to do this as a cost solution - here are the steps -.

I just think this video is kinda old. The guys I spoke to told us to install without tile spacers and use epoxy to elminate the seams. My husband did the install, he's never done a project like this before, and it turned out awesome. I can't see the seams unless I really search for them, and that's what we wanted. I'm happy and I just feel bad they're getting so many negative reviews- haters chill.

I thank you for posting this video. There are a lot of keyboard warriors on here criticizing your video, but people will stop posting if all they get is criticism! In the end, a ganite slab costs $30 to $50 per square foot, and for under $10 per square foot, this is a far cheaper choice. Most people don't have the budget to spend $3,000 to $5,000 for a solid slab and I think this video is terrific.

The point of having one slab of granite, is the continuity of visual flow. There are no breaks for a reason. This method exposes large breaks, is very non-symmetrical, and visually disturbing. If it has grout lines, it is no longer as functional as granite slab, and greasy dirt will trap in there looking very, very ugly. The thinness makes it prone to cracking if something is dropped on it. Might as well get cheaper and more colorful tile! In fact, this is nothing more than very large granite tiles.

WOW, you can get this very same color in regular granite for about the same price, and have it PROFESSIONALLY installed for a reasonable price. You'll have fewer seams, a MUCH nicer looking countertop, and no headaches. The guy does a nice job telling you how to install, but dang, forget the video, get to your local countertop dealer and do it RIGHT! Plus, do you just happen to have a wet saw sitting around your home? I sure don't.

@leisuresuitlarry1777
@leisuresuitlarry1777 9 лет назад
Wow, I didn't look at the comments at all before watching this, Found myself wincing quite a bit throughout the video I have to say. I don't know exactly where to get the "Lazy tile" product but I have to say that you have made this video and helped me think that I might not want it anyway. I mean, If I was going to have seams like that I think I might just choose to use real tile with a decorative look, I mean, since this looks kind of bad. Pretty sure the cost of that material is pretty high leaving me to believe i could find something that looks much better for less money. I wonder if there is a way to use this type of material and Not have any visible seams at all. the sink thing was looking a bit wired to me, after all is said and done there is a gap between the sink and the sink and the tile that runs as far back as your silicon bead. even if you caulked that off there would still be a dead air space in there that I would not feel comfortable with. I think i would pull the sink out, lay the grout, re set the sink so there were no grout on top of those edges of the sink at all like you had and then run the silicon on the sink all the way to the edge where the tile and the sink meet and then clean the silicone up so that there would be no way water and gunk could get up underneath that tile, even if catastrophic failure did not occur ( I am pretty sure it would) there would be mold and crap crowing under there in no time if that step was not done correctly. Right? the real deal killer though is how this looks when completed. I'm not sure what type of counter type I will ultimately choose but i am thinking this one might be completely off my list so thanks for the video for at least that.

This is not a bad approach for do-it-yourself granite counter tops, but I would omit the installation of tile backerboard and mortar. Simply install directly over the 3/4-inch plywood with construction adhesive as most professional installers do. Also, there is no need to accentuate the grout lines by putting in spacers and grout. Seems should be butted together and seal with clear silicone. They will be less conspicuous.

Get quotes from handyman and local small shop contractors for granite rather than granite shops themselves. You'll save some money because of the frequent customer discount granite shops give to some companies. Finding a good handyman whose very humble could result in a 30-40% savings on your granite.

bakerchic1958 usually shops use stone glue/epoxy and pre-mix with correct coloring to match to granite then place that into the seam area. Once dry polish the surface lightly. You need to have a good skill in getting a correct coloring out come.

So what happens if u need to remove tops say due to water damaged floor? Doesn't look like it can b removed and put back. Seems to me like u should template kitchen lay it out n a shop glue tiles on plywood excluding filling seams use a sink mounting system (not the plywood. Sink can't b removed and over time if it gets water damaged around sink now your plumbing is sink support) now you can install top like a laminate top(screws from bottom) finish seams and DONT use liquidnail to glue up splash it cures out hard it don't stick to granit very well and over time will pull loose and cause grout line cracks. Use silicone
@elcam84
@elcam84 9 лет назад
Personally a quality laminate would look better and require less maintenance. Laminate is very durable and does not need to be sealed because it is not porous like granite. I went through the calculator on the site and was not impressed by their prices. I have two places that will do real granite tops for less. In fact you can get the same thin granite seen in the video for $140 per 8' pre made countertop with backsplash. For a little more you can get 3 cm countertop slabs with backsplash from floor and decor or other suppliers in 9' slabs. The price of installed granite has come down quite a bit in recent years because of the amount of competition of installers. Full slabs aren't that expensive you are paying for the fabrication. Going rate here now is anywhere from $14-$35 sqft. You can get it as low as $8 if you pick up and install yourself (1.5-2cm). The granite in the video is just a large format tile countertop. Our house had tile countertops and I will never have them again.

He kept saying tile or tiles so I think the title of the video is a bit confusing to many of us because when you say granite counters we're assuming you mean a seamless look. So it just looks like you ruined a countertop. but if it's supposed to be a tile application, which he keeps saying it is, then i guess it does look like tiles. LOL you certainly don't use spacers for seams when you are trying to get a solid look.

I'd rather have the plywood base for a few years until I could afford to put a real countertop on, rather than to have what mildly resembles a sidewalk on top of my cabinets. Wouldn't all the added labour of cutting, fitting, grouting, etc. 3 billion countertop pieces erase the savings over just purchasing one slab? Not to mention, your new lazy granite counters would cause you to spiral into a cycle of conniptions, depression and regret.

if you can't afford the 50-60 dollars a square foot that real slab granite runs then get some butcher block from lumber liquidators or whatever that website is, they sell 1.5" thick 8 and 12 foot lengths of 25" deep (so it overhangs the front of the cabinet) for what works out to be about 15-20 bucks a square foot and is a hell of a lot easier for a DIYer to install on there own. I doubt this stuff is any cheaper I mean you're like 2 bucks a square foot just between the plywood and backer board and even if these tiles are 1/3 the cost of real granite (since they are 1/3rd the thickness, except at the nosing) your still 15-20 bucks a square foot and left with nasty grout lines.
@J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams.
@J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams. 6 лет назад
The concept is nice. However, it would look best with tight seams using epoxy mixed with granite dust. The large irregular shaped "tiles" confuses the eye making the whole installation look like a DIY gone wrong. I really hate saying this, but I feel obligated to tell others this is not the way to go. At least as far as having grout lines. A 12" tiles would look better if a tiled look is desired. Otherwise use epoxy with color matched granite dust to hide the seams. Additional, the plywood and backer board surface must be completely level and even across the entire surface. Or you'll have noticable unevenness. The larger the tiles the better your prep needs to be. You can adjust somewhat with the mortar thickness. Lastly, no cutting corners when cutting the stone. Start with a new blade, use the fence, pleanty of cool water, and go slow to prevent chipping. Cheers!

One major problem I see is that I will have a heck of a tear up job if I ever want to replace the sink.

I don't think this is aesthetically acceptable. For sure it does not compare with 3cm granite slabs. I think if you want to save money it is better to just use small ceramic tiles, at least the look will be aesthetically pleasing. Why does Lazy Granite not make longer granite boards? I think with some fiberglass back meshing epoxied on the granite they can get away with much longer slabs. As for the using the spacers between the tiles ... you really don't want that. Much better would be to use a clear epoxy with ground up granite of same color and place it vertically on the cut slab and then press the slabs towards each other. It would make an almost invisible seam.

majdq8 you've done it before? I don't think so it's not that easy. 3 cm and 2 cm are the same shit the only difference is the thickness

I don't know why anyone would use this. I think it's very ugly with all of those seams. Looks cheap

At first glance I thought it to be ugly, then on second thought, it looks like granite style counter tops from like a hospital/industrial kitchen. Not bad. I would do this in my kitchen. It looks easy to do if you are doing a counter top alone and you may not be very strong to carry a large piece of granite. It has function, despite it's looks. Its not messy like an 8 year old put it together. I wonder can the grout lines be colored to match stone material.

Typically a professional will be able to mix the epoxy the right color from the beginning so when you butt up the joints its practically invisible...that's the idea atleast

Of course, people are curious. Then at the end of the video they recognize it's ugly.
