Hey really crazy random question I know it's been a while since you replaced the turbo.. but what size of bolt are on the oil drain tube on the bottom of the core of the turbo?

Can you pull the turbo out with the downpipe attached?
@kurtsteiner1618
@kurtsteiner1618 3 года назад
Do you have to remove both up pipes to get to the oil return or just one? If one which side? I’ve seen videos for driver side only and passenger only and I would prefer to not have to remove either of them since it’s such a pain. Thanks.

I was hoping and planning to! But I don't think now that I am going to be able to make it. We have had some family plans come up that will come first. I am bummed to miss it though I was hoping to get the truck on the dyno with the new turbo!

I don't, these we're actually on the truck when I bought it almost 4 years ago, I just took them off and painted them!

Hey man, thanks for the video! I'll be replacing my IHI with a drop-in 64mm this weekend. Are there any mounting fasteners under the intake horn? I'm going to try and remove the turbo with the intake horn on then swap the horn onto the new one on the bench before install. Have a FabTech horn and those bolts are dang near impossible to remove due to being allen heads. Thanks again!

@FixedVaneDuramax 5 лет назад
Good question! You should actually be able to remove the turbo with the horn on, as long as there are no other lines in the way on top of the intake horn. The coolant lines are mounted on the passenger side, the oil supply is on the top/driver side, and the oil return can be detached at the back behind the charger. With those lines off and the 3 mounting bolts out the turbo should be able to lifted up and shifted forward to remove it. Or at the very least you can tip it back to gain better access to the bottom intake horn bolt to remove it. Good luck!

Can you leave the down pipe attached and pull the turbo and downpipe as one piece? Probably getting into this this weekend if my RDS 64mm shows up.
@FixedVaneDuramax
@FixedVaneDuramax 4 года назад
Hmm I doubt it but I have never tried it that way. I feel like it would be a lot harder to get the uppipe bolt off if the downpipe was still in the way. You could remove it from the turbo and sit it back against the firewall until the turbo is out, which would make getting the downpipe out much easier. Or remove it once the up pipes are out. Either way would work fine.
@TXRed1836
@TXRed1836 4 года назад
Makes sense, hadn't fully considered the uppipe bolts yet. Thank you for the response. I like your truck and enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!

I know this is a old video. but I'm doing my turbo and I have the same down pipe. I had to use a plumbing bracket for trans tube. you mentioned using a different one to route it to other side. but I didnt catch what was said. what are u using. thanks
@FixedVaneDuramax
@FixedVaneDuramax 3 года назад
WCFab and a few other companies make a driver side trans tube for a little over $100 if I recall the price. The allison trans has an identical port on the driver side so you can mount your fill tube on that side instead. I was able to flex the mounting bracket on my standard passenger side tube just enough to make it work so I never installed my driver side unit, but if I ever have it all apart again I am planning to switch it over.

do we need to rebalance the turbo after installing the wheel?
@FixedVaneDuramax
@FixedVaneDuramax Год назад
Yes you do need to rebalance if you install a new wheel.
@alexandrebeauchemin4236
@alexandrebeauchemin4236 Год назад
@@FixedVaneDuramax if the wheel is balanced independently?
@FixedVaneDuramax
@FixedVaneDuramax Год назад
I may be wrong, but from what I understand the oem turbo shaft assembly (exhaust turbine/shaft and compressor wheel) are balanced as an full package. So even if the new compressor wheel is balanced by itself the turbine shaft isn't balanced with it, so the smallest imbalance of the new assembly spinning at 100k+ rpm can potentially cause premature bearing failures. Just my 2 cents, when I rebuild chargers I have the assembly rebalanced every time.

I am not sure where you can pick one up locally, but it is called a TopSide Creeper if you google it there are options to purchase online.

Hey man I recently saw a guy with a pedestal on his aftermarket turbo. It doesn't change the up pipe locations but because it raises the turbo, I am wondering will the 3 inch downpipe and exhaust fit normally or does it need to be longer to compensate for the raised turbo? Thanks in advance
@FixedVaneDuramax
@FixedVaneDuramax 4 года назад
Hey good question, so for some clarification, to run any "standard" turbo you will need a pedestal. When I say that I mean transportation/performance industry wide turbos that are s300 or s400 based. These turbos don't have a integrated mount and exhaust inlet routing for our v8 duramaxes so aftermarket companies have come up with different pedestal designs to fit the s3 or s4 series turbos into the engine valley and utilize the stock style uppipes. If you go to wcfab.com or hspdiesel.com and look at their s300 or s400 single turbo kits, apart from all of the pretty piping they will come with a new downpipe that a.) is longer to compensate for the slightly higher turbo mounting and b.) Uses a standard v-flange mate to the exhaust housing of the turbo. Only the lb7 stock and drop in chargers (built from a stock housing) will use the flat face with bolts exhaust downpipe. It is a bad design that GM went away from when they switched to variable vane chargers with the lly and up (also switched from IHI to Garret for the manufacturer as well I believe) Sorry for the long winded response. Short answer: I believe stock or upgraded stock style uppipes will still work, any downpipe stock or aftermarket made for a stock or drop in still charger will not. A standard 4 or 5" downpipe back exhaust will fit as well. Hope this helps.

Kinda off subject for the video but is your truck at stock height in the rear with turned down keys in the front or do you have any kind of drop shackles?
@FixedVaneDuramax
@FixedVaneDuramax 5 лет назад
Truck is all stock suspension. Keys are turned down a little but overall it sits pretty level. I want the rear end as high as possible for sled pulling so I won't run drop shackles.

IF you have replaced your downpipe before it is probably a 2-3 hr job. If you have not expect to take longer as those 6 lb7 downpipe bolts are a terrible pain.
