Sharla and Mary take a look inside the Granuaile & Famine Centre in Louisburgh with director Mary Fergus in September 2022
Housed in St Catherine's church, the centre was officially opened 29th July 1995 by President Mary Robinson. The local branch of Mayo County Council Library is also allocated here. The Granuaile visitors centre has recently under gone a makeover with many community groups getting involved.
The LAMS (Louisburgh Area Men's Shed) have brought the Famine exhibition to life with a replica fire side scene.
The students from Sancta Maria College used their creative talents to help paint and create a young children's space.
Author Anne Chambers, expert on Granuaile, collaborated on the finishing touches to ensure the story of our famous Pirate Queen is retold.
Staff members Bernie & Sorcha had a vision for a more user friendly self guided tour and they have achieved such a wonderful inviting atmosphere. They are both such smiley welcoming hosts once you enter the door.
Open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm.
A visit to Louisburgh is not complete without the Granuaile & Famine Centre experience.
Many thanks to Mary, Sorcha & Bernie for showing us around.
