Probably one of the highlights of 2023 for me was my performance with Kristina at Weber State University, where the piano we were able to use for the concert was the most Ravel-compatible piano I’ve ever played in my life. So much of Ravel’s music is pianissimo and very fast, which is a difficult combination to achieve on most pianos. The night before the concert at Weber State, we were rehearsing in the concert space, and started recording the rehearsal once we realized just how amazing the piano was. Most of our rehearsals on tour were Kristina singing with me a little bit, but mostly me playing by myself to get used to the piano. At this particular rehearsal, Kristina could hardly help herself from coming to sing with me with each new song I tried because it was such a different sound than we’d ever been able to create before!
I thought it would be fun to show a side-by-side comparison of Ravel’s Le Cygne (The Swan), with the first video being recorded in my own studio in NY in November 2022, and then the second video being from this rehearsal at Weber State in November 2023. Not only does it show the HUGE difference in sound on the piano, but it’s also a fun way to see how our interpretation of the song has changed over the past year! (Excuse the poor lighting in the second video, we had the stage lights on, and the point is the sound!)
