They were unable to take over the final Italian stronghold within their land which was defended by a mere 46 Italian alpine troops most likely from the Monterosa. De Gaulle was embarrassed that his forces were not able to make claims on Aosta.

The French tried to invade northern Italy with Gaule and they were so hated by us that the fascists and reppublicans temporarily allied to beat them back 😂

Yep it was one of the many mistakes of Churchill, like Gallipoli. He thought that Italy will be conquered in a very short time. In reality by the time the soviets reached Berlin the Allies had not even conquered the whole peninsula. A massive waste of men and time.
