If you can discover somewhere that the mountains are full of surprises, it is in the Vanoise. Ibex, chamois, rare flowers, waterfalls, glaciers, scree slopes, lovely alpine meadows, steep mountain pass crossings, clambering over rocks. I walked around the Glaciers de la Vanoise, a continuous ice cap on top of the highest peaks in the area.
The Vanoise is the very first national park in France, founded in 1963. That this was not for nothing, is evident from the amount of animals and plants that now live here, and which have grown in number since then. Thousands of ibexes and chamois for example, some of which we encountered during the walk. The region borders the Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy, and together they form the largest protected area in Europe.
A well-known hiking route that runs through the Vanoise is the Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise. In 4 to 7 days you can walk around a number of the glaciers that can be found here, which together form an ice cap of about 10 square kilometers. Many hikers start their round in Pralognan, but because the capacity of the huts is limited, it can sometimes be a bit of a puzzle to get the route right. Also for us, when planning it soon turned out that the most convenient option would be to start hiking on the other side of the mountains. The handy thing about this hut tour is that there are several places where you can get close to the hike by car, especially on the south side of the area. And so it happened that on a sunny Sunday early afternoon we left the car at Parking de Bellecombe, accessible via a mountain road from Termignon in the Haute Maurienne valley.
This route, in the heart of the Vanoise national park, is composed à la carte between 4 and 7 days, depending on the route chosen. A tour of the Vanoise ice cap that will allow you to flirt with extraordinary diversified landscapes, between mountain pastures and eternal snow. There is no doubt that you will have the opportunity to come across ibexes and chamois, or for the more observant, to admire the flights of the bearded vulture or the golden eagle.
