To put a barometer and gauge on the greatness of Lea Salonga, consider not just what she's done. Consider what she should have done. She should have sang Phantom on Broadway. She makes a perfect Maria for West Side Story. By her own account, her agent told her she was being auditioned for the role of Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady. Only to have the offer pulled because "she wasnt white." Not her words. Theirs. Let's be clear about this. With her vocal gifts there is literally nothing this woman can't sing. NOTHING!!! Despite this she voiced two disney princesses. She won an Olivier as Miss Saigon. To top it off she performed the roles of both Eponine and Fantine in Les Mis. Clearly because the enlightened composer Schoenberg didnt care if her color was purple or green! Talent and physical beauty without peer as a combination in recorded history. Had she been white she would have more stage credits than two theatrical performers in history. Combined. THE GOAT. Nuff said.
This is what we call true singing. Perfect pitch, correct breathing and proper placement. Lea, you have reached a certain level of perfection. You are a gift to us..... a wonderful singer in this universe.
This is one of Lea's most beautiful vocal performances next to Kim in Miss Saigon that she does not boast of often enough! YES I give her permission to shout from the mountain tops and boast of this beautiful performance to the whole world!♥️💯🤗
Totally agree. Lea has this amazing voice that brought magic to the unforbidden love between Tuptim and Lupta. The garden scene was really enchanting. Was so mesmerized by it!🤗👏😍
Hiya!!! I was blessed to be able to see Lea’s very last performance of Kim in Miss Saigon. I have never been to a Broadway show before or since. She spoiled me. Because of that day I will never go back to see another Broadway show unless she is starring in it. You missed that show but she still gives concerts and theater work around the world so maybe make it a goal to see her in concert??? As soon as she walked on stage I forgot all the struggle and effort it took to get there.. Without a doubt that day is in the top three best days of my life. Lea was and continues to be simply magnificent.
Her name is spelled 'Lea,' not 'Leah.' Not trying to hurt your feelings. If somebody spelled your name 'Hermosah,' I hope somebody would correct them, too.
Simply beautiful....what a great gift Lea Salonga is to the Philippines! You can close your eyes and when she sings, you'll know it's her singing! What a great gift from God indeed!
Leah started it all! she deserved to be praised for opening doors for the Filipinos! you're the crazy rich (talentvwise) asian! but for sure you're also rich
I can't say more about Lea. I admired her so much until now. Her words are very clear and with feeling when she sings. Oh glory to God really for that talent. I was so impressed that the first One she thanked when she won is God. God bless you my dear.Keep up that humble attitude.
I love so much the way she sang this song and rendered together with peabo bryson! Wow! Again, a big thumbs up to Lea Salonga and Peabo Bryson! So mesmerizing and enchanting The King and I.
I grew up watching The Sound of Music at the time when Lea, my compatriot, also made waves in the West. It would've been heaven for me to watch these two women together.
@@icedkoko lea played the role of brigitta in the repertory philippines production of the musical in manila, not the one on broadway or the film itself :) ..it was right after she played annie..i think it was 1980
It was the Sound of Music of Repertory Philippines held at Meralco theater. I was so lucky to be able to watch it live. Monique Wilson, Raymond Lauchengco and his sister Menchu were also among the Vontrapp kids.
The two greatest stage singers that ever existed in the same project. In all deference to the great Julie Andrew's Lea Salonga is the greatest singer ever. Every time I hear her sing something new it astonishes me. This is the most beautiful love song ever penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Sang ten steps beyond perfection by historys true queen of music. The glorious Peabo Bryson is one of the few pop stars with the vocal gifts to stand toe to toe with this angel of music. Greatest duet I've ever heard. Nothing to compare to it. I feel that Lea Mis is the greatest musical score ever written. This, however is the most exquisite song of star crossed lovers. If you want to see the greatest singer ever, listen to this for five minutes. No one will ever match her.
@@johnpickford4222 Lea is not white that's why she isn't getting the accolade she truly deserves. She was actually discriminated a few times in her career for being Asian. If she were white, she would be definitely getting the meaty roles that white people like Julie Andrews would usually get and that would have made her an icon like Julie. So to answer your question, talent wise, yes she is on a par with Julie. And until now she is able to maintain her beautiful voice!
Lea Salonga is a magnificent singer:artist. She sings with such passion n clarity of words which is sometimes is not clear in some singers. Just love listening to her. Sooo proud her , a Philippine treaure in the stage of music . She is an international star at a very young age n still going. Her stage presence is awesome
I almost literally grew up listening to Ms. Lea, following her career all along. I also remembered my father was so proud reading to me a news headline "Lea: A Breath of Fresh Air." I am so happy to see these videos which were not readily available to me growing up.
Julie Andrews is magnificent. Grace and charm in every way. That being said, there is only one Lea Salonga. A once in a century talent. More like five centuries!! Anything and everything imaginable in a musical artist. Gifted with a voice that shames the Angels. Flawless tone and perfect pitch. Every note timed and delivered to maximum effect. Don't forget, this "Angel of Music" was only 20 when she did these recordings. Performing at a level unmatched by singers decades her senior. Acknowledging this woman's Unrivaled greatness in no way disrespects other performers. She is simply on a different level than anyone else. More than that, if you want to look at it from a selfish packaging perspective, who beats her for looks?! Like an Asian Princess. Or a Disney Princess. Which is appropriate, since she voiced two Disney Princesses. All this while lighting up Broadway like a Fireworks display. This point bears repeating. As I've stated before, if Lea Salonga were white there would be no arguing from racist onlookers. They would acclaim her for what she is. The greatest Singer ever to lift her voice in song. The undisputed Lady Goat for all time.
The vocal duet of Lea Salonga and Peabo Bryson is absolutely INSANE!! Such a mesmerizing and heartbreaking sound in a pairing has rarely if ever been heard. Peabo Bryson has one of the most stylish vocal instruments in or out of the world of popular music. Now they pair him with the most gifted female artist ever to render a song. SIMPLY UNFAIR!! "I Would Love to Be Loved By You" is a Classic even by the standards of Rodgers and Hammerstein. There is simply no way to match this recording. Not if you auditioned 10,000 different Wannabes!! Bryson has paired with some of the most famous female Artists of our time. He stated emphatically that Lea Salonga has the finest voice in the world. Just listen to this. How can there be any doubt?!! There are many fine performers. THERE IS ONLY ONE LEA SALONGA. The final stage in the evolution of vocal artistry.
Yes, many folks always remember that Lea was the voice of Jasmine and Mulan in two Disney blockbusters. They don't know she's also the singing voice (Tubtim) in the movie remake of The King and I Broadway musical till this video. Thank you
Oh Lea! Both of them shows not only voice but heart. I recognized a part in their duet where Martin Nievera and Regine Velasquez had their Broadway. Ya and that "to be loved by you".
Loida Castro Lea WASN’T at the original The King and I movie. Original movie WAS in 1956. And she wasn’t in any of the movie remakes. The video showed studio cast MUSICAL recordings made in 1992 and not a movie. With Julie, Ben, Lea, Peabo, etc.
