Getting down to depths where Kokanee are without downriggers is a challenge for many anglers. I have been using dropper rigs with sliding cannonball lead sinkers for years but many have asked if they can use lead core line. Here I compare dropper rigs with lead core line and explain why I prefer droppers.

I believe you've dispelled any belief that lead core should ever still be used, except for the reasons you explained. 40 years ago, that's how I first learned to Kokanee. We used leaded line, Ford fenders, and wedding rings, on Bead Lake. My grandpa would tell me I had a fish on. I never knew, even when reeling it in. I couldn't ever feel it.

I love using my leadcore!! I run 1 mono higher in the water and 1 leadcore to get deeper! Works great with no complaints. Suffix is the best leadcore and doesn’t seem to be as thick and stiff as Tuff Line.

Those were some nice kokes! I started experimenting with a hybrid leadcore setup last year. basically only 4 colors of leadcore with a fluoro topshot. I found the same results as you mentioned. The fight is just not as good, especially on smaller fish, and to get 25 -30 feet I was 120 feet back. It's always cool to learn new methods and I will say the leadcore does catch fish! As always great video, you do great work!

Nice video ! Also highlights the importance of using what works for your needs. I see leadcore used a bunch on larger vessels but like the simplicity of a lighter setup, especially in some of the lakes with the smaller koks. Got some pigs up there in CL

I've been running leadcore since I got into trolling for kokanee a year ago...had lots of success but lose alot of fish. Thinking because its such a long retrieval esp wjen fishing at 35+feet... when using your dropper rig how do you know the depth....is there a formula for weight speed and how much line you deploy? One thing I love about lead is I always have a real good idea of my exact depth

I use both methods, depending upon season and conditions, out of a 12' power skiff, set up specifically for fishing Kokanee and Sockeye Salmon. I have a rigger aboard, but seldom make use of it Just prefer flatlining to downriggers.

Tyler, I don't have downriggers, but I do have a leadcore (and dipsy) rig. And, I also run a dropper with the leadcore to get it down fast . 8 oz of lead will get it down to 25 feet with about fifty feet out, so the lines is at a very steep angle. Although, the outfit is heavy to start with, so it's not the sportiest equiipment to use, but it catches fish.
@craighealy6186

Hey dude your videos are very enjoyable. I fish lead core a lot and find after 2 colors are out the lead core deploys itself. I attribute that to pointing the rod tip towards where the line is deploying in order to reduce friction on the rod guides, and I use a rod that has the ceramic inside the rod guides. I also use Mason 18lb lead core. I have never used the lead core that you are using. Try placing your rod longways on your Kayak when deploying lead core. I only fish for brown trout but I watch your videos anyway. Perhaps you could make some videos on finding brown trout because there isn't much information on that. Thanks for all your videos!

It would be interesting to see what your results are using your dropper Rigs in combination with Spin and glows and wobble glows for the Kokanee. The spin-n-glows and wobble-glows are used quite extensively for drift fishing salmon trout and steelhead. I would love to see a head-to-head comparison between those two lure rigs with the two hooks system on your dropper flasher rigs in a new video.

Just a note - when there are ruptures in the braid with lead poking through it actually does compromise the overall strength of the braid. I learned that the hard way by losing several dodger+lure rigs before I figured out what the problem was.

Spilt Milt Productions I had started using lead core about 4 years ago. When I first saw the kinks with lead poking through I ignored it until I had breaks. Now when I notice the lead kinks I cut the line, remove small pieces of the lead and splice the braid together until I eventually replace the lead core.

I have no problem getting the microlead to roll off but the heavier stuff is just too stiff. However, I can't stand the microlead because I would get 2 or more kinks in it per outing. That gets expensive really quickly.

@@spiltmilt Great vid! I've used the same lead core (Tuf-line regular) that you are using and have found it hard to verify depth. You said in the vid that you had about 3 colours out but then said 150' which would be 5 colours (30' per colour). The 5 colours makes sense though as the average I've read is 5-6' per colour at 1-1.5 mph to get you to your 25-30'. I just tried the lead ball dropper you use for Chinook last week in the Sound with a 10 oz ball for the first time and was getting tangled messes quite frequently even though I have a pedal Hobie. I think sometimes I was letting it down too fast and others maybe going to slow. Maybe I'll try the same setup in Lake Sammamish for some Cutties (with a smaller ball of course!). Anyway, thanks for making these great videos!

I use lead core one thing I do is vacant the lead as you did but I push 10 lbs test mono in the vacated lead core tie three over hand knot spaced about one inch apart to hold the mono in then put about 20 feet of mono after the lead core.this way your playing the fish close to the boat on mono and the line will reel on the reel

I keep noticing the background in your videos all seem to be East of the Cascades. I’m in Western (Northwestern actually) Washington and I’m haven’t even made my first Kokanee trip yet. I’m dying to get out on the water for some though. Would I use the same tactics and gear in my area? I know the fish only run 10-14” so smaller lures would be better?? If you’re ever fishing this side I’d love a chance to fish with with you (I’ve no doubt I could learn a lot from you). I don’t have a yak though…mine is a pontoon with a trolling motor (believe me if I could figure out a peddle system I’d swap it out in a heartbeat…lol). One other question…that small line counter reel in this video…what brand is it? Thanks for the education and keep the great videos comin!!

2 oz at 1.3 mph with 50' of line is getting me down at around 24' at 1.5 mph I'm at around 18'. If I push it back to 100' on the linecounter at 1.5 I generally get 10-15' drop for every ounce 1.5 mph.

What would outcome be if using two identical dodger and leader length set ups: one rod having shrimp or hoochie with colorodo spinner and baited with corn, second rod has double hooks baited with corn? Can you show a picture of what the Thermocline looks like on your fishfinder? I was looking at a Himminbird Helix 9 and Helix 7 for 3 straight days on Lake Roosevelt (8-14 - 8/17), adjusted sensitity setting up to 15 out of 20, no lines on screen to identify Thermocline!

The goal of the video wasn't to show that you get more or less hits on one setup or the other. In fact lead core caught a fair number of fish that day. Both rigs had double hooks baited with corn. On top of that you gotta get all sorts of specialized lures and Dodger etc. Then you have to make the fish a 6 course meal.
