@Bruno BUT to be *aware* that we skimp on things that we think are easy. But *FEEL*, slight bends, playing with tempo (delaying notes) repeating a phrase at one octave higher, those are all things we need to improve uppon. Shredding and lightning speed solos are not things I am after........... Thanks A LOT Eric for your videos and advices........... -dan

Eric, great stuff. I tend to brain dump things I’ve slaved over, shorty after learning them. Watching your videos has helped me give licks “context” and hold on to them in my practice regimen. This puts them in a subconscious “licktionary,” and has improved my musicality substantially. Rock on!

That's exactly what happened to me with a Doc Watson take on "Victory Rag". Tried to play it his way, totally out of my league, spent hours just to get a couple of bars, finally understood i will never be able to get his feel (who could have thought of that), and turned the whole thing (well, those bars, actually) into a mid-tempo weird ballad with loads of hammers and ghost notes. Anyway, now i got this 30 seconds laid back acoustic solo which i usually do as a warmup. Speaking of which, that leads us to something quite overlooked : play some acoustic solos, they are the best for intonation and phrasing in my opinion.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 года назад
Yeah! Playing acoustic in the open position is HUGE for understanding phrasing and command - if you can make that stuff sound good everything else is gravy!

Lots of wisdom here pal and I totally agree. For me personally if I learn something like the solo on Its good to be king, I will put a lot of time into the phrasing. I will put a lot of time into little things like trying different bends or slides. I really want that feel and vibrato and the important stuff. HOWEVER, that last fast lick at the end of the solo ? I’m just gunna so some semi cool descending pentatonic riff haha. I feel licks like that make little difference so just make it your own. You need to spend all the time you can though working on Mike’s stern vibrato though !! Another cool thing is you having fun with your tone and not letting it stop you from playing what you want. Like just because someone doesn’t have a phaser pedal shouldn’t stop them from learning Have a Cigar. Learn the cool riffs and play it if that’s what you wanna do ! Don't let gear discourage.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 года назад
I know EXACTLY the lick you’re talking about! I’ve transcribed it, but yeah if I were to play it I’d take notes out - Mike actually leaves 4/4 time there

In a few videos now you've mentioned not having "fast fingers" something I relate with. Do you really believe some people just have a natural born ability for speed (nurtured by practice, of course)? Or can anyone become fast, provided they work at it long enough? Certain abilities come easier to some, of course, but do you think that can overcome by the rest of us if we work hard enough? Or do we each have our own distinct 'cosmic speed/talent limit' that we can't break no matter how hard we try?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 года назад
I absolutely think there’s biological limits! I found my speed limit a long time ago. Fast is ONE way to show command of the instrument, but certainly not the only way! These days, I’m a zealot about using less notes, and really digging in on them.

just wanted to tell you that Jesus Christ saves us from our sin if we put our faith and trust in Him! we all sinned and fell short of Gods perfect glory (romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is eternal death! (romans 6:23) but the gift of God is this john 3:16-21: “for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” and romans 10:9-13: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” so God is coming at a time we least expect, and if we put our faith and trust in Him and repent (turn away) from our sin He will gift us His grace and clothe us with the righteousness of His blood (but of course death could not hold Him, He is risen!) and we will have eternal life in His kingdom where there will be there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves you so much! (romans 5:6-8) but if we deny and reject Him and don’t repent from our sins to follow God, then we will have our part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. so hear these words, repent and believe the gospel! accept Jesus Christ and confess your sins to Him so that He will forgive you and give you a life with truth, love, joy, and peace. which will never fade away or perish. this is all if you haven’t done this already and Jesus Christ hasn’t saved you yet, also when you have time please you should watch this channel here on youtube called “Christ forgiveness ministries” and hear what they have to say, glory to God. God bless! ✝️👑💟
