John Tavares handing the C to Auston Matthews is like Charlie Conway stepping aside and giving his roster spot to Russ Tyler in the 1992 Goodwill Games
A lot of fans think you get rid of one of them, all of a sudden you have Cale Makar on RD or something. At best you could of moved Marner before his no-trade clause kicked in. You can't do it now and get anything.
@@wihamaki It’s not about that, It’s about being able to spend literally anywhere outside of the core to get some scoring support in the playoffs. You shut down the core, you win.
Add Kennedy, Apps, Conacher, and Day to that list and you’ve covered off the guys who are in the rafters. Jimmy Thomson, Sid Smith, Bob Davidson, Red Horner, Bert Corbeau, Babe Dye, John Ross Roach, Reg Noble, Frank Heffernan, Jack Adams, Ken Randall - are the guys I had to look up.
I came in hot from the Gilmour trade. Wasn't much of a fan of hockey back then but this girl I had a biggest crush on was a leaf fan so I figured that be an angle I could work. I remember when Sundin was an A and started getting interesting during that run they made before the infamous playoff drought
I don’t comment often but to be totally honest John Tavares is hands down the classiest player on the Maple Leafs. He will go down as a legend of this franchise and truthfully a legend of this era of hockey. We bag on these guys for not going all the way and yeah they have underperformed but that’s not to take away that when John boy scored that legendary goal against Tampa we all acted like we’d won the cup. Johnny Toronto for the class act he is, is a legend.
Honestly, say what you want about the Islanders going back to back final four, in this market I think if the leafs had made even one conference final with this group this era wouldn't be seen as the failure it is currently seen as, if they made two in a row this team would probably be as beloved as the Gilmour Clark period, and the Tavares signing would be viewed purely positively.
The Islanders stink and they only did that in years that covid impacted. Had they stayed in the Metro division who knows if they actually make it that far
watched the press conference and what a class act of everyone involved... JT is such a class act - and when they raise Lord stanley over their head we will be screaming in joy! Go Leafs GO!!
im blown away by how many people are suprised or upset by this, it seems like the best time and a long time coming, you could argue it could have been morgan but auston isnt a bad choice here. this also takes some pressure off tavares which i think is a big deal
I mean he didn't get the C as he sexually assaulted someone so that's my personal gripe with this, that he shouldn't have been ever allowed to do so as he has now faced 0 repercussions for his actions, he just had to wait a few years to get the C, oh, how hard his life must be. But I'm zany that way, ya know.
@@SkyFellowship According to the police report, a female security guard at a condo complex in Scottsdale made the complaint after she said Matthews and a group of males tried to open her vehicle as she sat inside doing paperwork at 2 a.m. The complainant said she got out her car and confronted Matthews, who she said appeared to be intoxicated. She said Matthews said he thought it would be funny to see how she would respond. The report states that, as Matthews walked away, he dropped his pants, bent over and grabbed his buttocks, though the complainant said he appeared to keep his underwear on. The report says surveillance video shows a male subject walking toward the complex elevators with his pants around his ankles. Not cool, but certainly not sexual assault. He wasn't even arrested for it. Again, not cool, certainly not something I would do but, not sexual assault.
@@SkyFellowship He mooned a security guard (which means all he did was drop his pants and show his ass) while as a drunk 20 year old, which yes is still harassment but is a FAR cry from sexual assault. Claiming that they're the same thing is insulting to him and also devalues the significance of real sexual assault victims. People that jump to these conclusions think they're some kind of moral champion in the situation, but really all you're doing is showing your immaturity, complete lack of understanding and actively harming the validity of the people you think you're "defending".
The structure of the leafs might be different with Berube But the results will be the same, doesn’t matter who’s the captain. They have yet to address their core defensive problems
Steve your right. If John wears the A and we win or go for a long run. John is definitely going to be a hall of famer. He ended the islanders series curse in overtime. Then he ended the leafs series curse in overtime. Round one or not. Two huge goals nobody forgets
John Tavares is a class act. He was a great Captain. He brought the young core forward as players and as Team ambassadors. His influence in their development is huge. Passing the C to Auston is a great gesture and a chance for Auston to take the team forward. There is nothing bad about this. Pure class all the way. To all the doubters, all the negative crap-hurlers, all the mud slingers, take a breath and see it for what it is. Stop throwing shade on positive things. And consider this, it’s known in business, it’s known in sports it’s known in the arts that if you surround somebody or a team or a company with negative thoughts they will never do well. Because they have to climb out of the crap of negativity just to show up. Try being positive, imagine good things, and be honest. If you were facing John Tavares yourself right now would you throw that kind of garbage in his face to his face verbally? Would you say the things you’re saying to Austin Matthews, to his face? No you wouldn’t. You wouldn’t have the guts. so why put it here on Steve’s comment wall? Get a fu@king grip.
@@Chain987 What do you mean exactly? John is still on the team now. What I am saying is that the best player isn't the best captain by default. It's not a defence of John dude, you just need to relax. Even if 34 turns out to be a bad captain, it doesn't take anything away from him as a player. These are two different things you know.
Say what you will about JT but man scored the goal to win the leafs there first playoff series in 20 years and wanted to be a leaf. Thats gotta bring positive energy to his career and legacy in Toronto
Dream with me. JT wants to prove he agreed with this decision so he busts his butt working for Papi. Everyone sees his commitment and follows suit. The Leafs do the thing. Papi lifts the you-know-what, takes a lap, and hands it directly to JT.
This is a massive year I do agree. If we don’t achieve something this year, we gotta do a total reset. Also Steve idk if we can say that stuff about the Isles in the ECF when we have only made it past round 1 once 😂😂😂
I do think it’s odd that we associate goal-scoring with leadership when they are two radically different skills. This isn’t related to Matthews, but the way hockey talks about leaders in general. Tell me a guy is a good listener, that he doesn’t take things personally, that when he speaks he shares his optimism and accountability, that he models treating his peers well to build strong team relationships, that he remains determined in games where you’re behind, that he actually DOES something when the team looks at him. People will look to bad leaders because of their skill, but it’s what someone does when they have your attention that matters.
Literally have never loved Tavares more than now. If he re signs team friendly he goes on my top 10 leafs all time. Team friendly to me is anything below 7m
Tavares decision? They’re selling new 34 sweaters with a capital C. They’re going to sell a tonne of merch to the same fools who always buy in. This is pure marketing.
Don't forget how mad and ready for change you were in May, Leafs fans. The core 4 is still there. The build doesn't work, and you know it hasn't worked for years.
Surprised when you brought up Iginla that you didn’t mention he was the recipient of the exact same thing as Matthews. Iginla was coming off winning a Richard trophy and Craig Conroy gave him the captaincy of the Flames like Tavares just did for Matthews.
Die hard Canucks fan, I have no reason to agree with you, but JT is a lock for the hall, and it's classy AF for JT to hand off the C. It's time, big respect for him to notice that first.
Honestly I think Alfie deserves his spot in the Hall of Fame coming into the league as a 6 round pick and then becoming captain honestly tell me how many people do you see becoming Captain after being selected so late in the draft.
He was loaned the captaincy anyway, if it weren't for that incident in Arizona Auston would have been the captain up until now. That being said, I'm glad John was given the "C" being the more experienced one in the room at that point. This is all good, no fuss, no drama.
Really hope Tavares retires a Leaf, it would feel wrong if he didnt, kind of hope he really considers taking a large discount to stay in Toronto for the final whatever amount of years he has left. I think even he knows the organization has overpaid him for the last few years, if not every year since he has come here.
When you've already had an all or nothing documentary made about the team and it was multiple failures ago this season isn't any different than the rest. The Leafs are clearly punting any hard choices to the offseason where if guys walk its not the team’s fault they really tried to keep them. So when its the first week of May and they are 1 and done again what has really changed?
Giving the C to Matthews was the only way the marketing department could find to squeeze more money out of the Leafs fans who will be buying one or two of the Jerseys with the C on it, making all the other people with a 34 jersey without the C look like has been.
So classy to tell your team not to trade you, that you're staying. Then go on a full league free-agent tour and sign with the team he knew he was going to sign with. Classy af.
Just seems like change for the sake of change, I think everyone assumed Auston would be captain after Johns deal was up. This was their "Big Move" this offseason switching around a label
Like rearranging the deck as it's sinking and thing it's gonna help. Same core just changing the captain is supposed to be an new and improved Leafs team? LOLOL You'd have to be stupid to believe this changes anything about the on-ice product. The only reason to be somewhat excited is the improved defence and a WAAAY more competent coach (which actually has the potential to make a discernible difference IMO).
New Captain of the Titanic! American. Only two American captains have ever won a Stanley Cup in NHL history. Two. Why? Because teams (usually) know better than to put a soft, stat-padding American in a leadership position when they want to make a Cup run. Toronto making Toronto decisions, as usual.
Ye i agree ... Same forwards who couldnt get it done in 6+ seasons still here couple new defense thats good but matty getting the C doesnt mean all that much tbh good for him but these guys in my mind still CANNOT get it done !!
I think John is a good person and a great player, but honestly after hearing his post season press conference saying "We were so close, we were right there" i was done with him as the captain. I think of when the Avs losing out the year before winning the cup how pissed off Mackinnon was saying " I haven't won shit in this league". That's what I want to see, just show that you're pissed off like we are at home. I'm so over hearing those robotic platitudes coming from our captain.
Matthews has not shown the leadership skills to be captain. I was thinking Rielly would make a better captain. And guys, this doesn't make the team look different.
I thought he was actually going to cry while trying to read that script. I think Tavares knows his best shot at actually making a run at the cup died with his choice to sign with his boyhood home town team. Meanwhile his old team go to the conference final two years in a row, possibly going to the final had he stayed the course. Instead his tenure as captain of the Leafs results in a single first round series win. No mater, he’s rich!
mathews is gonna score 75 this year, make it look easy in the regular season then have 3 points in the playoffs as the leafs lose in the 1st round. The captaincy changes nothing
Stumbled upon you Adam and Jessie couple months ago, and I can’t stop listening by far my fav hockey podcast around. We don’t get to hear much hockey where I’m from and hockey is my life. You deff hit it on the head with that video, maybe islander fans wouldn’t be happy but then again, not that many islander fans around to listen hahhaha. Love the content Steve!
I am absolutely certain that JT has a big voice in the room still. JT has also been a Captain for how long between the Isles and the Leafs? He is THE Vet on the team. I assume he will take AMs now vacant A so still has an on ice voice as well. Auston Matthews may, if he plays out his entire career here he may very well be the best Leaf in history. He would also enshrine himself for a space on Legends Row. Now that Arizona is gone, let's also put the AM is bolting home speculation to rest. He isn't going anywhere.
How on gods green earth is the 4th best player and the captain of a team that can’t make it to the conference finals a hall of famer? Most ridiculous statement I’ve ever heard in my life
captain? oh sure except when you look at the lost when he was in won when he was out Bruins series. Did they say hey we want a captain who had a disorderly in az? sometimes its better to do what you do best (scoring) and leave the leading to someone else.
John Tavares giving the captaincy to Auston Matthew’s was pure class. It would so amazing if Matthew’s can return the favor and hand Tavares the Stanley cup. That would make this day more special than it already is.
What team would celebrate a run to the conference finals and treat all those players like gods? Leafs fans definitely don't still talk about Gilmour and Wendel Clark like they're immortal 30 plus years later or build statues of anyone that only got to the conference finals like Sundin right?
Soory, but when Marchand cheap shotted Liligren and JT sat on the bench like he was waiting for a bus, that was the end for me. Nice guy, nice player, poor captain.
I genuinely think of it more of a distraction, get the fans happy about the new captain and their minds off of the fact they aren’t changing out any of the core 4. The bigger conspiracy is whether or not Toronto loaned money to Utah to buy the team, no team in Arizona for Auston to leave to
Tavares staying a Leaf for the entire year would have been more convincing if the team actually announced his extension at the same time. They didn’t, and I expect, by the time the trade deadline rolls around the discussion is going to be about ‘how did we get here?’ after Tavares is traded to a contender and Leafs are just below the playoff line.
Other claim Alfredson has to his name is being the first European born captain to lead a team to the cup final. However the point remains that Tavares' career stats are borderline hall of fame already, so there is a very good chance he gets in.
It's call Leafnesia. It is a phycological medical condition that leaves one without class or understanding of hockey. Akin to Dunning Kruger effect. Those who are the most chronic run leaf wed sites.
@@tryingtobefairandobjective3480the problem with your synopsis is that a lot of die hard leaf fans are from toronto and do understand hockey really well, they’re just delusional when it comes to their team, the copium is strong
