Leah Remini is very upfront about her experience in Scientology and those still in the religion. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Brett Erlich, the hosts of The Young Turks, tell you about her Elisabeth Moss comments. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com...
“Leah Remini is continuing her crusade against the Church of Scientology and its alleged abuses, and has some words for those who continue to support it ― namely actress Elisabeth Moss.
Remini is gearing up for the second season of her A&E docuseries “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” which tells the stories of ex-Scientologists like herself who have been cut off from their families and even targeted by Scientology followers after leaving the church. The actress was raised as a Scientologist from an early age and spent three decades as a member before leaving. Now, she is one of the church’s most public detractors, speaking out against the alleged abuse, fraud and deception that goes on within the organization.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Remini broached the subject of Moss ― a fellow celebrity and lifelong Scientologist.
“Elisabeth Moss believes that she can’t talk to me,” Remini told THR. “There’s a thing in Scientology called ‘acceptable truth.’ It means you only say what’s acceptable to the public. But she believes that I’m an antisocial personality - because I’ve spoken out against Scientology. So she isn’t allowed to talk to me. And me knowing that, I wouldn’t put her in the awkward position.”

LJ, its not a religion, its just being labeled a religion for business purposes. Its not a religion, because its selling courses under the guise of healing mental therapy. Not prayer nor worship. Its not a religion, because its based on pseudoscience or a technology for mental health and not religious principals, which require singing, prayer, rituals of worship, etc. In fact, if you search L. Ron Hubbards writings, he specifically stated in his own words that Scientology is not a religion. "Theta clearing is about as practical and simple as repairing a shoe lace. It is nothing to do with hypnotism, voodooism, charalatanism, monkeyism or theosophy. Done, the thetan can do anything a stage magician can do in the way of moving objects around. But this isn't attained by holding one's breath or thinking right thoughts or voting Republican or any other superstitous or mystic practice. So for the reason I brought up, rule out, auditor, any mumbo jumbo or mysticism, spiritualism, or religion." - Source is from his book, "History of Man", Chapter 8, published in 1952.

Wow I did not know Elizabeth Moss was a scientologist. She just lost a lot of credibility with me. I was supportive of her work with the Handmaid's Tale, because the story is relevant under the mysogenist Trump administration, but knowing that she has that blind spot and doesn't listen to any questions asked of her religion really throws it all under the bus for me. I agree that her acting is mediocre at best. I wouldn't go so far as to claim that scientology pays for her auditions or gigs, but they do baby their celebrities and give them the cush treatment, so she likely has no idea of any of the abuses occurring in the name of her "religion". What a shame! Well, one day she may wake up, but probably not anytime soon. If she follows suit with other celebrity scientologists like Tom Cruise or John Trvolta who refuse to do interviews addressing any of the critics. It is pretty obvious they are pulling the wool over their eyes and playing see no, hear no, speak no evil. 🙈🙉🙊 but it will be her own loss of precious time and energy and integrity in the end. Sorry to see that ship sink. Hopefully she will come around sometime soon and do an about face, like Leah and see it was all a ruse to exploit her. Hats off to Leah! Her integrity shines through! And she is courageous and empathetic and persistant. I commend Leah and I support her more now than ever. Poor Elizabeth Moss, though.

Cenk, I was raised in that cult. I was pressured into signing a billion year contract to work for them when I was 13. So did my younger sisters. The wrong doings of other religions are IRRELEVANT to the criminally destructive practices of this coward-cult. Is child labor just like every religion in the US? Human trafficking? Holding people against their will in barb wired facilities under 24/7 watch? Totally separate from many things done by this cult in poor taste are ACTUAL acts of organized crime. I reapect you a great deal. I am a fan. But what you are doing here is more aligned with a Sara Silverman joke you probably read on a meme. I get that you might not have time to fully research every topic you cover. Especially an unbelievably lengthy one such a the Co$. But you REALLY should. Besides the general entertainment, I think your voice would do a lot to help the poor souls who have been trapped or attacked by them. ESPECIALLY the innocent ones who were born into it (like I was). Who are put into Scientology brainwashing schools with no academic standards (like I was). Where Sea Org recruiters cherry pick the kids they think they can pressure, and whose parents they can pressure, into a lifetime of consentual slavery (like me/mine). Who later when trying to leave get threatened that their lives will be destroyed if they tell anyone what happens behind the scenes (like mine was). I could keep writing this for DAYS. But I'll leave it here. And thanks Ana! You had some solid points, as you ALL usually do.

Not a fan of religions in general, but I rarely hear about Christian churches harassing and suing apostates or people who criticize them. A cult is a closed social group that stress the importance of seclusion (either psychological or physical) and loyalty to the group in question. I would argue that many Amish sects are cults. The Jehovah's Witnesses bear close resemblance to a cult. There definitely Mormon cults. Mainstream religions might be based on superstition and a delusional world view. They might even be destructive and dangerous. But, that does not in itself make them cults.

@valhalla1240
@valhalla1240 7 лет назад
the are fundamental differences between religions and cults though and it has nothing to do with the objective obsurdity of their belief-system. In a religion you're free to join and free to leave and the way you participate is relatively speaking up to you. You can be catholic and never go to church and no priest will ring your doorbell and ask any questions. If you're in a cult you don't get to have that liberty. You are usually dependent on it, either financially or psychologically and your actions and behaviour are often monitored and controlled. Sure, that has happened in the past in christianity, but in modern times, people are very critical of these procedures. Scientology isn't a church and it shouldn't be referred to as such. It's simply a cult and any time it's being labeled a church it's being compared to other religions. The effect is that every religious person has to defend himself, instead of every scientologist having to defend themselves, as it should be.
@jjanaury3

OK first of all I see nothing absurd about their spelling. Secondly I believe they are speaking of religion in the general sense. Of course in every religion there are going to be extremist but as a whole most religion are not as harsh. The difference in a religion and a cult is control and ABUSE. Abuse that is woven into the teachings/doctrine of that faith. Not all religions are abusive: (physically sexually mentally financially environmentally etc) therefore not all religions are cults.

I think she can play so well in Handmaid's tale is because of her being in Scientology. I'm NOT for Scientology I think it's a cult and is dangerous. But maybe you need to be a bit "wacky" in the head to be able to play a roll just the one she plays in "June" so good. I wasn't aware she was in Scientology until recently and was surprised and disappointed. But she's a very good actress, at least in Handmaid's tale. Just a thought...

It's hard to learn what Scientology has been doing for decades and say "oh but other religions have their problems too." Sure they do. But if there is abuse like in Scientology in another religion established or not, you need to come forward. People can believe the earth is flat. But the second that group of people start abusing one another and causing harm within a nation, isn't it our responsibility to do something?

The so called christian religions that are cults are Scientology, Mormons and my personal favourite Jehovah's witnesses. These are just three of many I'm sure. Mormons and jws both wrote their own versions of the Bible, mormans book of Joe smith and jws new world translation of the holy scriptures. The jw organisation I know for sure has had at least 3 updates released in the last 15 years on the original bible. Putting in new restrictions and rules to suit their need to keep us mere mortals under the spiritual thumb. If they were not a cult then they wouldn't constantly keep rewriting the Bible and its true meaning. I'm an ex jw and the horrors I saw let alone experienced were dreadful. I could give examples of what I experienced that are just as bad as any other cults oppresive control over its members and how they do it. They paint a wonderful glossy rose tinted life if you join. However once you take those glasses off you see the real truth and not their version. Believe me its not pretty. Its destroyed a lot of lives and broken families up. I've had friends that took their own lives because of incidents that happened to them. Too much happened to me to go put on here and I also witnessed a lot including hyprocisy from so called elders.

I'm an agnostic but I know there is a huge difference between a religion and a cult. If you don't know how evil scientology (not "church of") is then don't make ridiculous comparisons. I went to Catholic school. Raised in the religion but when I didn't believe anymore I just stopped showing up! No One hunted me down. No one demanded that the rest of my family stop speaking to me. A religion does not charge you to find out its beliefs. It is awful that Elisabeth Moss is in The Handmaiden's Tale! I won't watch it but I read the book and a woman in that cult should not be playing the protagonist. She stands for things that the book was fighting against. And by the way, the Mormons are considered a cult.

There is a scene between Moss’ character and a commanders wife, Eleanor (edit: who is suffering from depression most likely bi-polar), where Moss has to ask if Eleanor wants to leave the cult and she replies to Moss something about “you mean where I could actually get mood stabilising drugs not just herbal teas” and rolls her eyes. How Moss had the audacity is beyond me, I’m guessing that big ole pay check helps...and the cut her own cult takes! It does cause me conflict to watch it and I really wish they had chosen any other actor! Maybe one not so hypocritical?

Yeah she was on two conflicting episodes of Who's The Boss. They were both meant to be pilot for Living Dolls but followed oddly different storylines. One is where she is Sam's friend who has no parents and Angela's advertising friend notices Leah and chooses her to LIVE WITH HER AND BECOME A MODEL IN A HOUSE FULL OF TEEN MODELS HOW CREEPY. And in the pilot for Living Dolls, Sam goes to visit her friend Leah Remini in Manhattan who is already a model.

I predict that Moss will be out within the next 5 years. Her career is getting bigger by the minute, she's probably being bombarded about this cult from all sides. Travolta and Cruise will probably eventually find their way out too. I realize I'm speculating, and assuming they'd want this when I clearly don't know or have evidence, but Scientology's list of defectors seems to be growing exponentially. Remini and her show is going to tip the scales.

do you guys practice these arguments at all before you make them? every group has a leader, therefore the leader is a hypocritical con artist... so Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris are secretly theists? lol. I like how you glossed over that Islam (apart from the minority Shiite branch and the even tinier ISIS crazies) and "evangelicals" are far more decentralized than Tibetan Buddhism or Catholicism. pretty much all religions are DIFFERENT and that would be the honest thing to say here. "cult" is pejorative in its common usage, but its referring to a subgroup (of religion, usually) that is far more insular and prone to abuse by its very nature. if you're going to castigate all religious people for what one tiny group does I guess one can do the same with the non-religious as well, right? I mean, it's not like all atheists are communists, right?
@stove5035
@stove5035 7 лет назад
christian lill I don't think the pope or other religious leaders you mention know for a fact that it's all lies. The religions are too old, and they grew up believing. Joseph Smith made the book of Mormon up. Possibly, he let Brigham Young in on it. At some point, though, people believe strongly enough that they'll be willing leaders without telling them that you're fleecing the flock. At that point, you've got yourself a religion.

I always wondered why an incredible woman like Elisabeth Moss who is wise, strong, intelligent and beautiful is in such a blatantly obvious cult? They may have some great aspects but surely the bad outweighs the good? Kirstie Alley attributes her sobriety to Scientology which is amazing but again surely she could say that she has moved on from that chapter of her life and leave - what power do they have over her? Are they blackmailing her? How does it all work in the times of Social Media when celebs and fans can speak out in defending themselves and others? That’s the part that confuses me
