Hi Eric...just a tip from an AC guy: Try a drop of NyLog on the O-ring, ferrule, and line (and sometimes the threads). NyLog is a sealant they've been using in the HVAC trade for years. It works, and if used correctly (meaning sparely), it will not gum up orifices or TXVs. I've had mixed results using NAPA repair fittings (never noticed if they were Dorman or SUR&R). Most of the time I can get them tight without sealants, but there is always that 10% that can never please the sniffer. Since I started using a couple drops of NyLog, I think I have that failure rate down to about 1%. Make sure you get the NyLog Blue...it's for refrigerant systems using PAG oil (NyLog Red is for CFC and HCFC refrigerants using mineral oil lubricants). The stuff sells for about $10 from my local HVAC supplier but, it's available on line at places like TruTech Tools for about $13. The last NAPA repair fitting I bought (like the 3/8 line-splice fitting you used in the video) was $48 my price (a rip-off, I know... the same fitting is $34 on Amazon). I haven't been able to find any reasonably priced kits like the one you have. So, mostly I buy OE lines and fittings. I've found they are usually about the same (and sometimes less) money. But, when a repair fitting is the answer (like Chrysler rear AC systems)... at the price for these non-reusable "You-have-one-shot-to-get-it-right" repair fittings, a drop of good sealant is cheap insurance.

Back in the early 60's my siblings and I were sitting in the wagon at a stop light on a sweltering day with all the windows cranked open. Along side us was a car with the windows up and my brother said, "hey look at that guy...his windows don't roll down." Pop told us that his car was air conditioned and all six of us kids just stared at them...

Since I was a guy who did this work, and moved on to doing commercial HVAC work, let me recommend not only the Nylog mentioned below, but also to pressure test the system with dry nitrogen up to the working pressure with a little 134a in the system, and then go over everything for a final leak check. As you no doubt know, Chrysler had a big problem with evaps leaking, and my detection method was to hold my sniffer at the evap case drain, since the refrigerant was heavier than air, and when I had silence (from the detector) it was golden.

My first job was working with Reynolds Aluminum Solar back in the early 80's and they had aluminum compression fitting for connecting their aluminum solar panels and they were also a one shot deal and if it leaked the glycol then you got out the hack saw and tried again. No loosening or tightening on those God awful fittings and fine thread just to make it more difficult. Great video as usual, you truly are a joy to watch for those of us in the maintenance trenches.

I wish I'd known about those products yrs ago. I passed on a couple A/C jobs that had impossible to replace frt to rr lines that were leaking. BTW, expensive or not, a customer will gladly pay $30.00 for a fitting vs 300 for a line and god knows what kind of labor. May not be the prettiest fix, but function over form in this case. Nicely done!

Since doing a complete replacement of the OEM lines were not cost feasible, this was the next best alternative for the customer. I actually was happy to see Eric O. Use the aluminium compression fittings over those rubber hoses. The compression fittings look more stock/OEM and I think they will be more durable. I don't think my mechanic shop knows or has this kit for A/C since every time I had a leak I either had the whole line replaced or I lived without the A/C. I'm definitely gonna let him know as it's an awesome alternative and much cheaper too. Love this channel!

SATAMAN Schmidt I thought Arizona was supposed to have dry heat? No humidity where you don't sweat? Not like the southeast where the humidity is off the charts. I can remember growing up when air conditioning in vehicles was an option and I myself have owned cars without it. I'm not going to get rid of a perfectly good car because of a non working A/C system.

Then buy yourself some oven mitts because you can't hold the steering wheel out here in Summer without air even with full gangster window tint which is absolutely mandatory. Brakes are optional, AC is not. Every year children die in cars left by idiot parents who leave them in the car and go shopping. It's a dry heat pal but 115F is 115F I don't care how dry it is. That stated very seldom will any water come out of the AC drain. Back in Pittsburgh you'd have a pond underneath you when stopped at a red light. Here nothing.

We're not talking about the car parked with all the windows rolled up?? What are you talking about?? You just lower the windows of the car while you drive so you can lower the temperature. Once the car gets rolling the temperature will reduce. You act like nobody else ever lived in a super hot climate. No kids ever died from driving down the interstate with all the windows down.

I used a brass ferrule compression fitting on the plastic clutch line on that '94 S10 plow truck I've got. Works mint! 😁 Saved me from having to do the job twice after my zip ties melted, and then let the plastic line lay right on the exhaust, as I held it to the boards until the valves floated while stuck in the snow. I underestimated the heat of a 5,500 RPM run at ZERO MPH. 😂 Just came in to eat lunch & clear my head. Battling a '08 Impala with a P0411. Had a plugged up solenoid valve / pressure sensor, and a bad solenoid valve relay. Well, I don't know if it's my Autel, or GM just being GM, but I was so mad this morning that I'm ready to take a nap here at 1pm! Trying to run the AIR test. First, while troubleshooting, it said, "Engine temp. too low" ... so ran it around the block ... then it says, "Engine temp too high". SERIOUSLY?? Wasted a ton of time waiting for it to cool enough to run, then the stupid thing times out, so key off / back on to try again - did that a bunch of times to confirm the new relay and valve worked. Now it's back together, so I figured I'd run the AIR test and set the monitor. Tried, and it won't let me in anymore! GRRR! Keeps saying, "Wait 60 seconds - limit exceeded". Key off / key back on, same deal! Now I can't confirm the fix unless I let it go and let the lady drive it for 2 months, since she doesn't leave town. I friggin HATE modern cars man!! I just can't deal with this stupid crap!! 🤬Letting me, and the car cool down, and I'll try one more time. This is friggin RIDICULOUS!!! Might have to just let the lady take it and walk away. 😤
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 6 лет назад
HAHA (sorry to laugh at you) Good ol GM AIR System. Did that one take that million dollar "diverter valve pressure sensor" combo? Expensive little guys and they corrode on this inside and set up all the time. Even when I use the tech II it has a 30sec max on timer then it is key off and wait. That gets frustrating on GM because they do that on the cam actuators and other tests too...
@SmittySmithsonite
@SmittySmithsonite 6 лет назад
Ahh, great! I get to look forward to that too.😔 I know you know the struggle! I swear GM is trying to make techs quit. The way they engineer stuff makes my blood boil! Defies all logic! Yeah, I replaced that valve/sensor combo unit. That was fun. Stupid plastic retainers on the hoses. Fantastic location for that blower motor too - right in the line of fire for salt, water, and road sand. None of the o-rings I had were the same thickness as what GM used - I figured as much! They were still relatively pliable, so I douched them with silicon grease and reinstalled. After I relaxed and watched your video here, I went back out there, and I was able to run the AIR monitor - was strange, because the Autel said the test failed ( think it was spelled "test fuaild", or something lost in translation, LOL! 😂). Monitor read OK, and no codes - I WON! 😁Anyway, I shipped it, so the lady can run it and get the rest of the monitors to complete (I couldn't get the EVAP monitor to run with the Autel - kept kicking me out because some unknown condition wasn't met - said to rev to 1,800-2,200 ... but the second I touched the pedal, it aborted). We'll see if it ends up back here for something else. What a TOILET that vehicle is!! 10 years old and it's complete JUNK! SMH ...

Great to see an AC repair. People wonder why AC is so expensive, but when you factor in all the specialty tools and training, its easy to see why. For an isolated rear AC problem I might have been inclined to block that part off, recognizing that the front AC was fine. Next one that comes in to be blocked off, please keep the camera rolling.

PS: if you slide a piece of rubber hose just larger diameter than tube onto part next to tank prior to installing coupling it will insulate the tubing next to the tank. And by the way, when you leak check, do so by vac'ing the system then doing a 10 minute test to see if the vacuum leaks down prior to charging (if you don't already do that). You probably already know this but for those who are watching, they may not. I've found the electronic leak detectors so inaccrurate as to be unreliable for most smaller leaks. And I've got over 40 years experience on a/c and refrigeration (perhaps 10,000 leak checks under my belt).
@lawman1995
@lawman1995 6 лет назад
A Day what do you think about pressurizing with dry nitrogen? I've had semis pass a vacuum leak test but not hold a charge. Just the other day I had a dump truck that had been charged at a mom and pop shop that could not find any leaks. I hooked a machine to it and pulled it down only had .4 lbs in it. Ran a vacuum leak test and passed. Hooked nitrogen to it at 250 psi and the leak shows its self at the TXV. Evaporator somehow wore down enough on the flange to where the o-ring would not seal under pressure.

Did something very similar today to my 2011 Durango using *GASP* Dorman line terminator block off kits, one 3/8" and one 5/8" (for the guy below asking). Got the Dorman parts on Amazon for about $32, plus a can of AC Pro. I cut the lines about 10" farther forward than where you did, right near the very front of the rear driveshaft because I think my leak was between there and the spot where your repair was. The terminations were good quality and appeared to seal well, no leaks noted after the first hour...we will see how it holds up. My third row passengers won't be happy this summer but this is a brilliant repair.

A couple of years ago, the A/C lines to my rear evaporator on my '98 E150 failed for the second time in its life. The first time, I purchased the OEM replacement line kit at $,$$$ ! The repair required dropping the gas tank so all together it was BIG BUCKS> This time the repair shop said they could have a custom made hose made and installed for only a couple hundred. The shop subcontracted out the hose and unfortunately the company had a hard time getting the proper ends so it took several days to "build" the hoses. They used Goodyear Galaxy A/C hose and just tie wrapped to the frame from the front to the rear. I did add some "extra" protection at point that were likely to chafe. How many 20 year old midwest vans have functioning rear A/C ! Pretty amazing !!!

They call them cinch clamps. I get the PNs from SUR&R website & order from eBay. Less than Adv Auto free shipping & no tax. The 5/16 comp fitting PN AC516 at Advance $28.99 +Tax and eBay $24.29 5/16" doesn't come in kit (don't know why) but can be ordered separately along with a bunch of mm fittings. AGS does same crap and you have to buy at auto parts or hardware stores. Auto Cooling Solutions has some nice splies good to 2600 psi I may try in the future. I'm going to say it but Dorman does have certain products that are pretty good like the splice fittings and their nylon fuel line repair kit but I'm under duress writing this b/c most everything else is junk and will comeback broken if it makes it out the door. ETCG continues to make high quality videos. You can always trust the information from his videos. SMA sets the bar high with high quality videos injected with humor along with an enormous variety of car repairs. ETCG is more serious than SMA. I actually find it annoying when an instructional video spends too much time being silly. SMA has mastered the art of humor in his videos. ETCG didn't lose his way because you discovered SMA.

There are a number of outer shaft deburring tools that work very well for such applications and reasonably cheap too (under $20). They are quick, and since they pull the shavings away, much less likely to leave anyvin the tubing. Nice job, Eric! 👍

This one was interesting. Everything I was thinking, you said out loud. Happy to see professional work being done. Thanks for demonstrating the repair kit.

Amazon sells their stuff to the public. That kit is $425. Search "S.U.R&R" to find it. They have some smaller fitting replacement kits. As you said, none of it is cheap.

I have a 2014 Durango and the same thing happened 2 years after purchase (2016). I was so mad I drafted a letter to FCA and my wife deleted it. At least if was still under warranty. Anyway, they claimed they had to partially lower the fuel tank to do the work so I ran the tank as low as I could and dropped it off for the day. Came back at 5 PM and drove off satisfied. Fast forward 16 months and I'm at my brother-in-laws farm and he puts it up on his lift. He is curious since his friends just bought a used Durango of the same year. Well, the lines had all popped out of those cheap plastic "holders" and he found a missing gas tank strap bolt. Thankfully he is a trained mechanic (heavy diesel but I don't let that bother me ...) so he found a suitable replacement bolt and showed me a way to strap the a/c lines back and keep them from banging around. After I returned to my dealer I showed them the picture of the missing bolt. They apologized. Later I found out the mechanic was given a royal butt chewing for the mistake. I'm just glad that the tank didn't fall out of the 700 mile trip to my in-laws.

I've never seen those anywhere before, great idea! I usually TIG Weld holes or damage from accidents in A/C lines. You said 'cough Dorman' 1 more time than SUR & R so 'cough Dorman' will be thrilled! Haha Another alternative(though not my first choice) to the zip tie could be a rubber insulated saddle/cable clamp etc but that would entail drilling holes to fix to the vehicle.

With the Venturi technique your creating a low pressure outside of the hole then drawing a vacuum so the relative pressure is higher inside the tube than outside.

I just had to change the shaft seal on my ac compressor. The power steering pump had been leaking all over it for about a decade. I hosed everything down with brake clean before working and learned the hard way about the brake clean and refrigerant sniffer. As soon as I walked under my car port, it went off and pegged the scale. It’s a TIF ZX-1.

These are such a pain in the a** to work on Eric. Your experience and skill helps you make your own luck in these cases. That said, fixing the high pressure side always makes me cross my fingers, toes and eyes just hoping it doesn’t leak. Nicely done!

That's interesting that there are kits like that available. Thanks for the reminder about the Chrysler minivans. I've had to change the rear a/c lines on a few under the recall. Wish that they would have done what GM did, put them in sections, would have made doing the recall easier.

Plus vacuum is sucking things inward whereas the charge will push things outward--I find that's a reason you won't see a vacuum decay yet you might see a leak once it's charged.

for zip-ties use a side cutters or "flush cut" cutters and it won't be sharp for the next guy. A small file will make quick work of the point if you can access it. Its a pet peeve of mine.

I guess times have changed. When i was in autobody college 1991 we installed rear cabin ac on our instructors personal ford van that had R12. We used 3000psi hydraulic hose on the high pressure side & regular 5/8 radiator hose and hose clamps on the low. A lot of it. All the reclaimed R12 was free sucked/filtered/stored from damaged cars.

Another solution for systems that the owner may consider repairing in the future, I use the bolt in block off plates from Auto Cooling Solutions. They bolt in at the line connection and seal like the original did. No need to sacrifice the line set.
