Great info, thanks. I had a leak in my kitchen extension a year or two ago when the guttering from a previous owner twisted under the weight of a downpour and emptied onto my roof, it then found the hole in the ceiling for the light bulb and was leaking there!. I fixed the guttering, a bracket hadn't been screwed onto the facia board! Fast forward to now. We're having a thunder storm with pretty heavy rain (for the UK), I was making a cup of coffee in the kitchen and suddenly, drip drip on my shoulder. The water is coming in again through the hole in the ceiling for the light bulb! I have just remembered after watching this, that I have a couple of cracked tiles on the roof. Thanks to a heavy footed window cleaner some years ago. This is most probably where the water is getting in. I have just found a video on replacing single tiles, so I shall try that method before getting a roofer out for a quote.

Great video, clear and straight to the point and I learn't something that I can check with my tiles to try to find an annoying roof leak.

It is hard to check the channels though. With the way my tiles lay on each other. Easier for me to paint some waterproofing material between the cracks. Takes a few coats though
@SocialMedia-ie4kk
@SocialMedia-ie4kk 2 года назад
That sounds exactly like what you shouldn't do, unless you were to waterproof the entire roof from the ridge cap down. As this video points out, if the channels are blocked then the water is just only to build up and leak under the tile and into your ceiling. I have fallen into the same trap as you, hard to lift the tiles so I tried waterproofing the valleys and the first row of tiles up. Guess what's still happening. Now i'm going to have to try to remove the waterproofing to let those channels run freely.

@@SocialMedia-ie4kk it's a little hard to explain without photos but I meant that I was doing the painting vertically sort of in the direction that the water is running down not horizontally across the roof where it's blocking the channel. In other words I'm putting the paint in the space between the tiles so that the water continues running down the roof instead of in between the tiles if that helps explain it better
@StAnger561to770
@StAnger561to770 2 года назад
Of course once the page is gone the water's going to start creeping between the channels again and onto the roof but you got to work with what you got just easier for me to do it this way especially considering that the roof itself is sort of warped even with brand new tiles they don't all fit exactly together perfectly

Why wouldn't roofers make it regular practice to seal all the gaps?

Hey guys, are there any shortcuts to cleaning water channels which are blocked with debris? or is the only way to remove the tiles and clean? thanks

I'm thinking brushing between tiles after lifting top one up. Yikes.

What about concrete tiles?

How do you find the broken tile?
@joeys.7437
@joeys.7437 8 месяцев назад
Same technique as finding a "Needle in a haystack." Or you can slightly lift every tile with a flat-bar & observe the water channel(s) until you find it. However, if there is one, there is most likely many more... Some tiles are more prone to this type of hidden breaks than others. After a rain, you can sometimes track water trails visible on the felt to potential culprits as well... Happy hunting!!!

ok so I came here looking for an explanation as to why I have water coming through brand new concrete tile forming as wet patches in the underside of the vallies, any ideas?
@StAnger561to770
@StAnger561to770 2 года назад
Concrete or clay tile? Maybe they were not laid properly over each other or the underlay waterproof material was not laid properly or perhaps the roof is just a little warped. My old roof is a little warped and even though i have new tiles they do not fit snug exactly everywhere and i think some water comes in a few spots still. Not as bad as with the old tiles though
@fuzzzeballs
@fuzzzeballs 2 года назад
@@StAnger561to770 none of the above the water is coming through the tile itself it is permeating the fabric of the individual tile, not the roof with a bad join or shit underlay and wonkey battery's, I put the roof on new myself the fucking things leak! my suspicion is that as they are concrete tiles they are just shit

@@fuzzzeballs that really sucks man sorry to hear that yeah I know the feeling I got some new tiles on my roof this year I thought they were fine but I went up there a few weeks ago because I had a water leak after a heavy rain and I realized that these tiles are having some hairline cracks in them but this was not the cause of my roof leak. The roof was leaking because of some problem at the edges. Anyway I was able to fix the leak but I was a little disappointed about these tiles. I live in a place where the sun is very strong in the summertime so I'm not sure what can cause the crack maybe it was from the Sun maybe it was damaged during transport shipping to this location. I was sort of wish and I had gotten the concrete tile instead of this clay but after reading your comments I guess maybe it wouldn't matter too much. I think it can come down to look and finding a very good manufacturer but even they can have a bad batch sometimes I imagine anyway sorry to hear about your trouble. I noticed some of my neighbors have this sort of roll on roof material that looks kind of like tile but I'm not sure how durable that stuff is either
@StAnger561to770
@StAnger561to770 2 года назад
I would say there's some sort of waterproofing material that you can put onto the tile for example it's like a paint but it has different names and I'm not sure what it may be called in your country but it may be an option for you of course painting stuff on your tile may not look wonderful but if it stops the water or slows the tile from falling apart it may be a good option
@fuzzzeballs
@fuzzzeballs 2 года назад
@@StAnger561to770 you are better off with clay concrete tiles always were shit I suspect hairline cracks too as the most erected area is a patch out of 400 M2 so a bad pallet of then, they are guaranteed for 20 years but that's horse shit they won't cough up, I live in Hungary and they are full of shit here
