Some mechanic has had good success with hammering in the main seal and his don't leak.

Hi Rob, do you mean hammering the rope part?

Awesome video mate. I'm about to buy a Perkins for my boat and will do this before I drop it in.

Yes! Best time to do it, do all of the seals if you can, specially the sump / oil pan in my opinion. Great engine :)

Nice work! Looks like the rear main seal was the bulk of your oil loss, hopefully the sump pan leak is tolerable to keep from having the take the whole thing out. Did you have some damage or issue with the engine mount bearer? Great visuals on the video. Gives a good sense of the scope of the project if folks have never taken their engine apart that far. Naively, I had no idea what to expect when I did it a year ago and it was like opening a very odd and inconvenient Christmas present to get to that rear main seal!

Hi Ellen, thanks! Thinking of it as a Christmas present is the way I'll go from now on :) It is weird, you stare at these monolithic lumps and occasionally get to look at the insides, it changes your perspective. I had to chisel out a few millimetres of fibreglass on the engine bearer to make room for getting a socket onto a rounded bolt head I've now replaced. There's always one bolt that takes ten times as long as the others!

Nice video. Did you have any issues aligning the flywheel and bell housing upon re installation?

Thanks S/V Zephyrine! I didn't have any issues, no. It's running smoothly with no vibration and I've had it up to 3300 RPM. You are supposed to use a dial gauge on both but I didn't have access to one where I was. It's actually fairly easy, so the next time I have to uncouple the prop shaft, I'll probably pull the gearbox and use a dial gauge to check alignment.
