Lip slurs are a fantastic way to develop flexibility and access to the different registers of our instrument; while we often practice lip slurs that move systematically from one partial to the next (i.e. 2nd/3rd/4th/3rd/2nd partial) there are a wide range of musical situations where we need to move across wider intervals, and thus wider partial leaps. In this Daily Practice Tip I talk about a few wider interval lip slur exercises and some ideas to think about in developing these intervals. Take a listen, let me know what you think or feel free to share your own thoughts!

Thanks for this very interesting video. I love practicing flexibility but I only use Colin exercises. These suggestions of yours are useful and stimulating for musical awareness.

A great suggestion! I haven't had one in the shop for a bit but as soon as I do I will grab a video with it! Quick side note; this model is one of my favorite large bore tenors period!

You should compose a lip slur warmup

Love your videos. What mouthpiece are you playing?

A Bach 5G; I keep trying other options but I always come back to the Bachs (I play a 5G on large bore and 6 1/2AL and 7C on small bore.) I guess I am boring in that respect but they just play the best for me!

Excellent video. Do you have a list of studies that would be good to introduce students to lip slurs? Again, great video and great execution here. The sound was amazing as well. Thank you.

I reccomend Lip Slurs by Brad Edwards. It's a great book for lip slurs. It is divided into three sections: slow lip slurs, fast lip slurs, and lip slur melodies.

The Remington Warm Up Exercises are another great place to start (either the original or Hunsberger edited version); there are a ton of exercises from the Remington I use with my students, especially as we begin building a warm-up routine for them...

@@SchmittMusicTromboneShop Thank you to both of you. I will add these to my list for my trombone students. These videos are great. I hope your boss is appreciating the time, energy, and knowledge that is going into these. Keep them coming. They are an excellent resource.

Our Lake City TB415; I continue to enjoy playing it and I feel like I get a bit more core in the sound for myself as compared to the gold brass (also great, just different!)
