I have about 950 hrs in the '24, and the same in the '25...The 24's big brother. Having been trained by the USAF, I found the 24/25 to be as close to a jet fighter as you could get. I loved these models, later models were not the same. I never had a problem with either aircraft.

Clocking 950 hours on the ‘24 and its larger counterpart is no small feat. Your perspective as someone who’s been trained by the USAF is truly unique. What would you say is the most important lesson these aircraft have taught you?

I have never had more fun than the mid sixties in the left seat of a Lear 24 during takeoff watching the go up meter indicate 8500 fpm; the only problem was the fuel gauges were going down at about the same angle; 350 gph, but what the hell I was getting paid to have fun and the boss was buying the fuel👍

In a previous lifetime, I was an AME on Learjets, Cessna Citations and Israeli Westwinds. To me, the Learjet was the Rolls Royce of jets to work on. The build quality was very high. I only got to fly once on a Learjet to fit a wheel on our Westwind which was involvwd in TNT freight in Australia. It was a memorable flight back with me being the only pax arriving back at sunset into Mascot International Airport.

Your experience as an AME on Learjets and other aircraft is incredibly valuable. The Learjet, often referred to as the Rolls Royce of jets, indeed set a high standard in aviation. Considering your extensive background

I flew on a leased 35 which had a larger cabin between an airbase in ILL. and Maryland. It was used to give younger military pilots extended flight experience rather than risk military aircraft.

Great video! Glad you mentioned the Swiss fighter DNA. Many of the mishaps were high altitude upsets, as I recall most were pilots working around the yaw damper or some other safety feature. Bill Lear was quite a character- he invented the 8-track, new auto radios and other inventions. His inspiration is found in the antithesis of the Learjet in the Canadair Challenger. A tubby looking biz-jet but I believe the 1st "stand-up" cabin. Everybody could go fast but people were looking for real comfort. The Challenger provided that and was eventually stretched to become a regional airliner.

It’s fantastic to hear from someone who appreciates the intricacies of aviation history, including the Swiss fighter’s high-altitude challenges. Bill Lear’s contributions were indeed significant. His vision led to many innovations. What do you think might be the next big innovation in business jet design?

I got trained and typed in serial 23-77 at the age of 23. I only flew the Lear 280 hours but it was a thrill every time I pushed the throttles forward. The Lear experience definitely helped me get my next job. I would love to fly one again as long as I wasn't paying the fuel bill.

We flew a 24D with no TRs for 20 plus years. Very grateful to have flown it but glad when the 35s came along with better fuel flows lol. Nothing could beat the excitement of the takeoff and climb out though.

@@dontdeletehistory Thank you for your comment. On the commercial side, I had the thoughts of being a commercial pilot. But that did not happen. No avaition/pilot colleges/universities close to me. So, I did the next close Aviation career and the was a Flight Attendant. I got to jump seat to work and home in the cockpit. Was always talking to pilots men and women. But the traveling was the amenity that I enjoyed!! I studied about Europe in college and then I went Europe. Since, then I had the chance of being on a private corporate jet once. And that was about 10 years ago.

What happened to the Lear 24… Did it go out of style? Was it too loud? Were there no mufflers for their shriek? Were the mufflers crazy expensive so plane owners couldn’t afford to keep flying them? There is a great pic of Frank S. standing in front of his… back in the 60s.

My father flew a Learjet for Pratt&Whitney that had the fuselage of a 35 and the wings of a 45. As it was an engine test-bed it had a hard foam aerodynamic modification over one wing. It was a bizarre beast. My dad loved it and said it was the closest to flying a fighter since his days with the F-86.

Hello, sorry for the late reply. I am afraid I do not have a S/N and could not find a picture of it on P&W's website. I do have some photos from my late father but I would have to find them, scan them, and then upload it to an internet file share. The biggest, and most notable difference, is that the test engine is remarkably larger than the standard one. It has no paint scheme and looks more like a 'green' aircraft from the factory. If you reply to this message I will make an effort to find the old photos and upload them.

Narration is on point but it has no alignment with this random series of repeated film clips. Narrator says one thing, something completely unrelated appears on-screen.
@LJDRVR
@LJDRVR 8 месяцев назад
Nice writing and narration, but you’ve not properly researched your subject. Most importantly, you’ve padlocked on the Lear 24 as emblematic for the various concepts you discuss, but that effectively misses the point. It was the Lear Jet that was emblematic, NOT the 24., which was the least significant model. Also, the Lear didn’t arrive from the P.16 in whole cloth. They are not the same size and do not share a single common part. What the P.16 was to the Learjet is a cost-saving entree into a new design by utilizing the platform, configuration, airfoil and most importantly, the wind tunnel and flight test data of an existing program.

The Lear 23 (Intro 1962) was the first exec model offered by Bill Lear. Initially, the 23 was given certification as a fighter jet. The 24 came along in 1966, which was the 23 with an increased MTOW, and no other significant design changes. (signed LR-JET type rated pilot, time in C-21/35A)
