Next obi video: finding a Maru obi, putting it on and then modeling the difference! In Kyoto, when buying a secondhand obi, the clerk referred to a full width ro obi as Nagoya. I was confused because I expected it to be partially folded. For awhile I thought she was confused and then I realized later that I was. Lol. Great job folding all those musubi!

Thanks A LOT for busting a lot of misconceptions about hanhaba obi and heko obi! I think these obi must be considered more. Just two considerations about chuya obi... Chuya obi is also commonly called "kujira obi" since it resembles a whale (dark below and lighter above) and sometimes the motive on the lighter side are upside down, because you have to tighten it with a hikinuki musubi.

Hi Billy! This video is very informative as I always had the difficulty of figuring out which obi to pair with what kind of kimono, and now that I have learnt more about these types of obi, I can have more choices for my casual-wear kimono! My first and only obi is a maru obi, it is 4 meters long and very stiff, I paired it with a furisode but it was so hard to tie the obi beautifully, now I kinda regret not getting a fukuro obi instead ;__; I'm also kinda curious to hear your opinion on how people style their kimono with corsets! Look forward to watching your new videos!

Thank you so much for all your videos, I really love them. once I acquire some kimonos to actually learn how to use, which I am using your tips from the video about what my first kimono should be, I hope to find some time to also book a lesson with you butuntil then can you please please please also do a video about the types of kimono like you did hear about the types of Obi?! Like in some videos you use the terms for the more official kimonos or for the less official kimonos but I have yet to find a video explains the different kinds from the most official ones and for what occasion to wear them to the least official ones and for what occasion to wear each of them.I can basically now only tell that the strict black ones with a lot of family crest are highly efficient only for funerals and the parents of a couple getting married I think? The ones with very long sleeves are only for sleeves are only for very official not married women and I can tell the difference to a yukata. Please do a video about the types of kimono .

Oh Billy, this is such a great video, thank you! I inherited my collection more or less in one go and have been learning about it while I go, so it’s been a long process of trying to figure out what’s what and what can be worn with what etc. This video helped me so much with identifying especially all the odd types of Nagoya Obi that I have, amongst other things. One question I do have however is about Fukuro Obi - I have a lot and very rarely any opportunity to wear them. Of course the heavily embroidered gold and silver ones are super formal but I hoped I could wear some of the less ornate ones with Iro Muji or Komon Kimono - from your video it sounds like I am wrong! Or could I get away with it? I have several that are quite plain, for example 3 of them are embroidered with the Hannya Shingyo in plain thread (not gold or silver) on a plain background, would it still be unsuitable for wearing in O-Taiko style with a more casual Kimono? Sorry about the long comment, lol 💜

@BillyMatsunaga

Yes, they are the same. Depending on the school they often change the name. It's super confusind. But they're the same. Anyway: yes, the kichiya and bunko just differ suuuper slightly. But they differ!

I hadn’t known about the different kinds of Nagoya obi! It’s interesting that there are so many types of obi that we’re invented. As a video suggestion, I would be very grateful if you could make a fukura suzume tutorial, as the only videos I’ve found require special items like obi clips or only show how to dress another person in the obi. (Of course, considering the complexity of some musubi, maybe you need those to be able to tie it properly.) Anyways, thank you for making so many great videos!
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 4 года назад
Hi! When you mean tying a fukura suzume by yourself: that won't come without special items. Fukura suzume has to sit on your shoulders which means it's impossible to tie it on the front and then turn. My ultimate goal is always to look like someone dressed me when wearing furisode. That's not possible with fukura suzume when you don't use special items. Sorry!

@@BillyMatsunaga Vielen lieben Dank.

I have seen ppl wear bunko musubi with kosode, tho often with a slight variation to have a more elegant shape. It likely also depends on the type of function/event the outfit is for I think, as bunko tend to give a less serious impression?

As elsewhere in the fashion history, more fabric = more wealth. As mentioned here, fancy obis were a status thing that folks copied from performers and Oirans, celebrities of their times. Similar to how youth today copy their idols and buy Louis Vuitton. Then they kinda stayed instead of the simple ties they use to use, because honestly you could bring more variation in your wardrobe by mixing and matching different kimonos and obis.
