This video focuses on all accessories (komono 小物) for wearing a kimono. It will show you the most basic komono and also more advanced kimono, how and when they're used. You will also find out what are my favorite items when dressing myself. And ignore the fact that I made a whole video about komono without mentioning tabi socks (tabi 足袋) even once... I guess, they're way too basic, so I totally forgot to talk about them. 😅

In case you need a list, like me: -hadajuban/hadagi (first layer) -hoseigi (padding, optional) -juban (hanjuban or nagajuban) -han-eri (material that makes second collar) -eri-shin (plastic collar stiffener) -himo/koshihimo (ties) x 3 or more OR -korin belt (width of your back), waist belt (lenght = 2x around your hip), 2-piece or 1-piece korin belt -datejime/datemaki (broad tie) -obi-ita (stiffener under obi) -kimono clips -obi-makura (pillow that helps with tying some obi knots) -obi-age (silk cloth tied under obi) -obi-jime (cord that goes on obi)

So heres the thing: i watched this vid some days go, thinking "well that's cool but why bother if im never gonna own a kimono" Today i went to a thrift shop. They had a ton of kimonos. Got one for 35 bucks. Time to binge watch all your vids i guess 😅

So grateful that you're sharing your knowledge with us, thank you! When I visited Kyoto, my friend asked if I was going to wear a kimono, I said nope. But she is a good enabler so not only did I end up wearing a kimono but also bought one along with everything needed to wear it. Without your videos I would struggle though and never try putting it on myself.

Thank you, this was very enlightening. I'm only just starting to learn how to actually wear a yukata or kimono though I already have a few of them; I've bought them just because they are so beautiful. It was quite a surprise when I first thought about wearing them too and then found out I'll actually have to add quite an arsenal of other things to my wardrobe too before it is possible ;)

This answered a lot of questions I've had thank you so much. LOVE the hair (I'm biased as my hair is purple too lol) I also love your channel, it's hard to stop watching your videos and go to bed which I should do. XD To top all that off your opening (which I've heard over 20 times today haha) makes me want to go watch Tenchi Muyo, that anime is the first time I heard that kind of vocalization (when I was much much younger) and so I will forever think about it when I hear that. :D Your purple hair and makeup makes your eyes look purple too and they are just so pretty.

super helpful video!!!!!!! i bought a very fancy tsukesage for my wedding last year...but it is too fancy for every day wear and the kimono shop owner was kind enough to gift me all the accessories that went along with it so i had no idea what was actually involved (since i basically took the whole package and had someone else dressed me). Now I want to learn how to wear kimono properly and buy a casual kimono but was overwhelmed at where i should start..so this video came at the right time.

About the linguistics: Koshi 腰 means hip. And himo 紐 tie, which means it’s only the tie that goes around your hip. And you have also the words munahimo 胸紐 where “muna (actual reading for the character alone is “mune”)” means chest. So it’s the tie under the chest. And all other ties you use when tying the obi are called 仮紐 karihimo which means “temporary tie” because you take them off once the obijime is on... so why the heck would you call all those 3 types “hip tie” instead of just “tie = himo”. That’s my problem with the linguistic here 😂

That is interesting... The kiorin belt with the 2 snaps look exactly like the mattress sheet corner straps we use in the US to clip the sides of the fitted sheet to hold onto the corners so it doesn't rise up off the mattresses while you sleep. I like to call it a mattress hugger. Lol. Great share, thank you.

These informations are really interesting and helpful. I knew that shibori obiage were more formal and luxuous, I wish to know more about it. Also, I love shibori so forgive me when i wear shibori obiage with komon ^^'

Thank you so much for this. I was thinking of getting started with my kimono collection but realized that a yukata will be fitting for me because I live in a tropical country (it's so hot). So I was wondering what are the necessary accessories for yukatas? Does it have the same accessories as a normal kimono or otherwise? I'll be here for the next video! Thank you!

You look AMAZING!! The colour suits you so well 😊😊 I was wondering, how do you tell the difference between a yukata and a hitoe? And is it okay to not wear a nagajuban under a hitoe? Is obi ita really necessary or can I not use one and tie my obi directly on the kimono which will have been tied with himos? Thank you very much for your precious advice.

Bonjour Billy, je suis française et je ne comprends pas tout votre langage, mais j'adore vos vidéos. Depuis que je vous découvre , je commence à faire un petit kimono en soie très simple comme un gilet, avec aucun accessoires, mais j'aime beaucoup cette pièce. Je veux faire beaucoup de kimonos comme les vôtres (mais moins complexes) pour rester dans la maison parce-que en France je ne peux pas sortir dans la ville habillée de cette façon. Les gens jugeraient que je suis folle 😊 Merci beaucoup de votre générosité 😊

Hi Billy! Great video, as usual. I have a question. When doing a chore such as washing dishes, in order to keep the sleeves of your kimono dry, is it permissible to tuck the ends of your sleeves into your obi, or would you just tie them up with a separate cord? Would tucking your sleeves into your obi be considered rude or uncouth?

Great video, I’m trying to learn all the kanji for these items and this really helped! This spring I bought a set of some komono from Sou, as well as a pretty blue tsumugi, but unfortunately shipping to the U.S. is still suspended, so it looks like it could end up being almost a year from when I ordered until I receive them.... Up until now I have just been using makeshift supplies with the only “real” item being my erishin. While it is certainly possible to dress using all homemade items, I imagine it would make the process a little easier to use items made for kitsuke. Also, I know you said you don’t really use datejime, but I’ve seen some datejime-obiita combo items before, like a datejime with a stiffer part on the front. Have you ever used these, and do you have any opinion on them? Anyway, I love your videos and they are always helpful! So glad you’ve been safe during the natural disasters!

Ok, you did ask me for my personal opinion, so here it comes: those datejime with the stiffer in the front made me stop wearing datejime. They’re 100% polyester and the stiff part is also plastic... I got a bad heat rash with them and I would never recommend it. But a lot of ppl obviously buy them. I find them simply uncomfortable and nothing goes over a nice and sturdy 100% silk Hakata ori datejime 😇

Great video! When it comes to the erishin, I was wondering what kinds of materials were used before plastic? You mentioned being able to make an erishin out of paper, but would there be any other materials that are appropriate? Thanks!

Wow, this makes me wondering too. I always thought that they were plastic back then when they were invented. I've once seeing that bride's kimono in yumeyakata rental use some kind of stiff fabric that looks like crinoline (fabric interface with glue one). But they are shaped like triangle. I mean two triangle that supposed to be inserted following the shape of the kimono collar. Sorry to interupt though. I'm just getting too excited.

I don't know if you have mentioned this before - I haven't made it through all of your prior videos yet, but when you first started training to become a certified kimono teacher as a foreigner, were you encouraged or discouraged by your teachers to become a kimono teacher? I am only curious because sometimes some places can be very proud and protective of their culture and may actively discourage non-natives from being involved. Did you experience anything like that?

No one ever discouraged me. Japanese in general love to share their culture and they are always so happy when a non-Japanese comes and wants to learn.
