This video is fantastic! I'm not a newbie by any stretch but I've mostly been playing fingerstyle and can have limited experience with pure strumming. This has really helped me understand it better.

I have to concur. Not a newbie but I play a modified accoustic finger style and I really don't do much in the way of straight strumming. Of course that shows up when I try to do any straight up 12 bar blues. In that case you have to be like a machine... I will try your method. I particularly like your comments about can you have a conversation while your being your own metronome...

A good sense of rhythm and strumming is often the last physical part of playing that players develop, it is also the most difficult to teach. Justin's patient style and perfectly paced lessons are the best I have seen on the internet. I would recommend him to any beginner or intermediate. I have taught part time for many decades but even I learn new ways of teaching certain musical concepts by watching his vids. Guitar can seem extremely difficult at first, your fingers don't want of make the what seems like pretzel shapes, your fingers get sore, and it seems like you have no coordination, it get much easier in time. For those who have been going at it for a few months I offer congratulations, you have gotten past the two month hump which has a 70% attrition rate. Playing will start to become rewarding and lots of fun soon. Good luck to all.

I took a break from playing and now that I’m back I’m really struggling with my strumming. But since I know everything takes time I’ll practice and hopefully It’ll get as smooth and natural as before.

Hey Justin, thanks for this, and for all the lessons you've put together. I've been on the cusp of learning guitar for decades, and never really found a set of instructions (or a teacher) that made much sense for me. I discovered you a few weeks ago after deciding once again that I would give it a try. Your beginner lesson series is an amazing set of work. I know enough that I've been able to skip ahead just a little bit, but your practice tips for even the module 1 and 2 lessons are very helpful to me. I never really learned strumming patterns, and I get thrown off very easily. Your methods are working for me, and even though I make tons of mistakes, I feel like I'm making some progress. Many thanks!

How to identify the strumming pattern by just listening to a simple song, how many beats are in the song and how to play the pattern along with the song? Gaining that knowledge will be really helpful for us to expand our strumming horizons. Thanks again!

I’ve been trying to learn guitar on and off over the past thirty years. I can read music, tabs, I know the basic open and barre chords, I know scales, etc. I’ve never been able to figure out how to make anything sound right, it’s all about strumming patterns. This video is an eye opener for me. Awesome vid about strumming patterns! Would it also possible for you to do an in depth video on how to get the best sound while strumming? I find it quite hard to get a consistent smooth/soft sound out of the guitar. Pick often hangs on the higher notes. Or I’m missing strings. It’s all about being subtle and I’m far from that :) It would be interesting to get tips on the differences of the picks, how to hold them and even on how to properly strum without a pick. Finally, what’s the guitar you use? Thanks for everything Justin!

I'm a 59 yr old beginner and this lesson really made sense to me. Gave me some ideas for some patterns. My Father played Rythem guitar in a band for over 40 years and he was my inspiration to try and learn rhythm guitar. He is in his 80's now and cannot really play anymore. But he still has the capability of teaching me some chords so combining that with this video and strumming patterns has helped me expand my strumming technique and the great sound I am getting now! I only get up to visit him every other month or so, so when I go visit this next time there will be a noticeable change in my playing and I know that will excite him. Thank you for these video's. I am quite sure most beginners get a lot from how you present your information. Its definitely easy to follow.

Thanks so much Justin! I've been playing for a number of years and thought my timing was much better than it was. I started jamming with a band a few months ago and overall because our drummer is tight I've found I can keep timing with him and adjust if needed. But last week I played my acoustic with another guy trying to do leads over me and he honestly and brutally pointed out that my timing was drifting and I needed to work on it.

Not sure I can verbalize this but I always thought that each time I saw a chord over the words I needed to strum the necessary beats (4/4, 2/4 etc.) and was always hurrying to get the beats in before the next chord. Sounded weird too. However, I watched another player and in some songs several chords make up one bar so you don’t play the chord with the 4 strumming pattern but the base note then move to the next chord until you have the 4 beats within that bar. May be two strums for a chord then 2 strums for another chord to make up the 4 beats. It’s hard for us beginners to figure out a bar when it’s just words on a paper with chord letters above. Sheet music will tell you the beginning and end of the bar. That realization was an eye opener for me.

I have been playing almost 30 years and i teach guitar & ukulele but i have never been any good at explaining strumming patterns to kids. Yea me too. Been playing over a year strumming is my problem. I'm going to try what Justin just taught me. I'm all in on the guitar, get up a hour early to practice and stay up a hour late each day. I'm much older now. I had one when I was younger 16, father passed away and so there went the guitar. Needed the money, fast forward 40 years and I'm back. Justin is really the inspirational part of me wanting to learn. Well here goes the lesson. Thank you Justin. Really!

I'm trying to record some basic strumming as a backing track to practice scales, as my guitar teacher recommended, and I realized I'm having a massive hard time with strumming consistently. This is the best video yet! Thank you so much!

I love practicing my strumming patterns while practicing chord switches with new chords at the same time . 2 birds with one stone and gives me a better ear for the chords :)

56, picking up guitar after 20+ years. Was kind of poorly taught by first instructor and gave up cuz I couldn’t find the strumming pattern in many songs I like and he didn’t correct my bad strumming habit of not keeping my hand moving. This tutorial gives me super motivation to keep after it. Been doing 15-60 min about 4-5x a week. Really enjoy your teaching style for a month. I know I’ll make great strides after breaking these bad habits and applying your technique! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
